    I still stand by the opinion that the Abbado Recording would have been much better. I dont understand how people can prefer this. Just from a recording perspective its so much worse, it sounds really muddy, you cant hear the individual Instruments and loud sections arent really very loud and thus dont seem as powerful as they should.

    *Edit;* dislike the recording even more than I remember.. I just don't think its a very good representation of the piece, *especially* on first listen when you don't know what you're listening for.

    • @Quotenwagnerianer
      @Quotenwagnerianer Před 5 měsíci +1

      Totally with you. The VPO and Mahler were at odds at those time and Bernstein had not yet warmed them up to him. That came in the later peformances. But the 5th out of this cycle is really not recommendable.
      Public Vote is not always right. Out of the suggested recordings either Abbado, for a videographed performance, or Karajan for a pure listening experience should have been the pick.
      I really hope for the 6th Bernstein's filmed version does not win again. Because it is also not that good. His later recording with the Concertgebouw however is probably the best recording of the 6th ever made.

    • @harveychilds3992
      @harveychilds3992 Před 5 měsíci

      I'm pretty certain that for the 6th it'll be the Bernstein/Vienna 89 recording. I think the 5th suffers from not having a cut and dry reference recording (except maybe the karajan?, but going by views on CZcams maybe not), whereas the 6th that seems to get talked about most is that 89 one, deservedly so imo.
      I think Bernstein has 3 Mahler reference recordings, being the 3rd with Boston, 6th with Vienna, and (what I'm betting on winning) the 7th with NY. But *none* from _this_ cycle are noteworthy.

    A composer in the same style as Mahler and maybe even better is Richard Strauss. You should maybe take time some time to listen to his Sinfonia domestica or Eine Alpensifonie which are both really great pieces. The fact that you take some time to go into Mahler's pieces is probably due to his brutal changes of ideas without a clear transition. In Strauss, everything has a link and you're therefore able to understand the piece better.

    One of the best symphonies ever written, but I’m so fascinated by the opinions on interpretation..
    My 2 cents… the comments on the actual video of this performance are interestingly 95% super positive. Personally I don’t *hate* it, but having played it under Sakari Oramo last year, this rendition for me just feels really old fashioned and it’s WILDLY different from what I experienced as a player, and having seen it a couple of times live in London in recent years.
    I think people are quick to be so scathing and negative as if interpretation is black and white, but it’s personal, and you can see Bernstein is totally living it from start to finish. And look at the orchestra in this video… There’s not a woman nor non-white face in sight and it’s probably a performance from the 80s(??) so it’s a different world to now, but it still sounds great even if it’s not to everyone’s taste/completely accurate to the score. I do think you MAY have had a better time listening to a more current orchestra’s performance but you smiled and headbanged to this regardless! 😊

    • @mauryq2150
      @mauryq2150 Před 5 měsíci +2

      This is from 70s and sound of Wiener Phil was much better than now. One thing is: Wieners hate Mahler at that time, even Bernstein was struggling with them in rehearsals (it's on video). He did much better interpretation with them in late '80. In my opinion todays orchestras are too soft and play without tension becouse of smaller amount of players and different technique.

  • @jg2977

    This is not an accurate rendering on how this piece should sound. The recording is very compressed, in such a way where the soft sections are the same volume as the loud sections. Furthermore, the sound is very muddy, which results in losing clarity in the inner voices and not being able to hear some important passages at all. Listen to Lenny’s version on DG with Vienna, Mehta conducting the NYPO, or Barenboim conducting Chicago, and you’ll truly understand the power of this symphony.
