REASONS FOR MY CHASE CREDIT CARD DENIAL…
1. You have too many active accounts or too much available credit (Previously I had 6 Chase credit cards on the personal side)
2. One or more credit cards have a high balance compared to the credit line
3. Insufficient installment loan information
4. One or more recent requests for new credit (Most recent was about 1.5 weeks prior as I was going for 2 Chase credit card approvals in 1 month)
WHICH CREDIT BUREAU DID CHASE USE?
- Chase used Experian for my personal credit card (IHG Rewards Premier Credit Card). However, Chase may pull a different bureau based on location, and they may also pull 2 reports.
WHICH CREDIT SCORING SYSTEM DID CHASE USE?
- Chase used their own “Chase Proprietary Score,” ranging from 250 - 900.
MY CREDIT SCORE
- 764, based on Chase’s Proprietary Score as of 7.22.2022
KEY FACTORS ADVERSELY AFFECTING CREDIT SCORE
1. Number of credit cards with a balance close to the credit line
2. Insufficient installment loan information
3. Number of requests for new credit in the past 3 months (for me this was 4 inquiries in 3 months)
4. Length of time since last request for a new credit (for me this was around 1.5 weeks)
DECISION
- Denied at first, but I was able to get approved for the Chase credit card after speaking with the reconsideration line.

That Chase employee sounded like someone that knows customer service. Good job! 👍
Absolutely 🏆
I love getting to see a live example of how to get a denial overturned. Denials have always been something I’m scared to receive, but these videos show me that they aren’t the end of the world haha.
Yep, the world keeps spinning! 🌏💳
I love the thumbnail, and congrats Mark on your latest approval! Thank you for the awesome data point from denial to approved!
Thank you, Thi! 💯
Great video Mark. Glad you were able to get that turned around and really informative data points. Looks as though banks are attempting to lower their risk in this environment. Thanks again for the video
Glad you enjoyed it, Ryan!
Awesome vid. I got denied as well recently. After watching your vid today I decided to give the bank a call on my lunch break. To my surprise I got approved an hour later. Really appreciate the encouragement and insight. Great content.
Congrats Eduardo! 💥
Ditto. Just had a successful reconsideration call for the Chase Ink Unlimited. Thanks for the inspiration and template, Mark!
Love your channel, Mark. Thank you so much for all your videos.
Glad you like them!
Congratulations on another card approval, Mark! I think I’m gonna get the IHG Premier Biz version. I’m at 3/24 now so still waiting for a better SUB from WoH.
Thanks! Sounds like a great plan 🏆
Great video Mark, I really appreciate your content I have learned a lot! My wife and I just started the points miles game this year and are loving it! We each got the Chase Trifecta and the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless for the 5 free night certificates. I am eyeing the WOH card next!
Glad to hear you're benefitting from the channel, Joseph! Congrats on completing the Chase Trifecta in 2-Player Mode + getting the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless with the 5-Night offer! 🏆
Your videos are the best. Thank you Mark👍
Thanks Sohel!
Thanks for sharing! Not surprising their use their own formula seeing their scale.
You bet!
Nice outcome!!!!! Mark
Thanks Joseph!
The last time I got turned down for a card, the letter said “lack of recent activity on installment loans”. I have a car note on my credit report that was paid off at the end of 2020. I paid it on time every month, and put enough extra money towards it that I was able to pay the loan off four months early. I never understand why not having an open loan on your credit report is seen as a bad thing.
Doesn't surprise me. A credit score is not necessarily an indicator of our financial health or how good we are with money. Rather, it's a score showing how well we manage debt, which means having debts can actually be _good_ for your credit score even though they can be bad for financial success.
That's why it's so crucial the the credit card game in a way that allows you to win with money 👍
I got such a kick out of this vid lol! I went thru the exact same thing with Chase, got the same dear john letter from them with the same reasons for denial. I wasnt mad, ive got great cards already, so i said to hell with Chase. Fast forward im buying something on Amazon one night and saw the ad for the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card and i thought man this would makes things so much easier than linking my debit card to them so tapped apply, got approved right away, not even realizing its a co branded card with Chase, so now im inadvertently in bed with Chase now anyway lol! They can be a real pain in the ass but if you really want one of their cards id say keep at it eventually you'll get in there!
Welcome back to the World of Chase + congrats on the approval for the Amazon Prime Rewards card! 😄💳
Jeffrey, I want to personally thank you for this video, which inspired me to contact Chase after being denied for the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards card. I was approved and now I can earn the companion pass when I'm expected to make plans to fly to Hawaii this year. Thank you again.
Awesome to hear that! Well done on getting the decision turned around. Enjoy that Companion Pass ✈
Got mine overturned! Thank you for the help I got approved
Right on, congrats! 👊
You have some of the best absurdly overdramatic video thumbnails 😂
Thanks Pat! 😁👊
Congratulations on the approval!!! 😁
Thanks Kevin! 👊
Nice. I have the IHG premier and just got the IHG premier biz last week
Legit! Congrats on both of those approvals! 🎉
You are unstoppable on the credit card game. 😎
😎🏆
I just got approved for this card, got super lucky! I was at 5/24 on TU and EQ, but for some reason I was only at 4/24 on EX. Chase pulled EX, and the card that was slow to post to EX appeared two days later! Talk about lucky!
Dang that's awesome, congrats! 💥
Thanks!
Great video. I just denied yesterday for the chase business ink cash. I called and they said I am at the 5/24 rule. Took a hard hit.
Bummer, but yes, the 5/24 Rule applies to business cards when applying 👍
BTW, congratulations 👏🎉
Thank you! 😁
Another great video Mark! Congrats on another approval! 👏🎊. Me personally 4 credit cards is enough for me even though I'm kinda tempted to get more. But Congrats on reaching I think you have 44 now? 🤔
Thank you! 💯 4 cards is solid; plenty of maximization can be done with that! This was Card 48 😬
This video just literally worked for me 😂😈🙌🏾 and now i have the card in my account .. thanks!
Boom, congrats! 👊
Last time I was totally turned down for a credit card was 22 plus years ago before I learned about when to apply and gardening
Great to have a long track record of approvals! 🌟
Got the csp back in may and chase just denied me for the freedom flex a week ago. Called reconsideration. Rep asked a couple of questions then said everything looked good but i wouldn't know regarding approval for up to 10 business days. 3 days later i was notified of being approved
Congrats! 💥
Showing us how it's done😀👊🏾
You know it! 😁👊
Great video Mark!!! Is this card a keeper card or a one and done? Thanks Mark!!!
Thanks! The answer to that will vary from one person to another. For me, it's a keeper card.
This might come in handy. I’m at personal card #6 with Chase after the IHG card. My 48 month Sapphire sentence is up in Aug….. 😬
Exciting 😁💳
I love that Chase customer service guy's New York accent
💯👍
Great video thanks right now I use the united airlines explorer card the best buy card the city rewards plus card and the m life las vegas card from the bank of Omaha I am not sure what amrican express credit card to get yet.
Congrats on all those approvals, Jonathan!
I’ll for sure try this.
Good luck! 👊💯
Congratulations
Thanks Bruce!
Recently I applied for the chase freedom unlimited a few days ago and it gave me the 7-10 day message. I just called a few minutes ago and got approval.
Congrats! Well done on turning the decision around 🏆
The problem with denial reasons is that usually go for the reasons provided by FICO or Vantage scoring systems. So sure, your one $400 balance might be lowering your score form being perfect. But it’s not the real reason you were denied.
Yep! 😄✌️ Makes me wonder if denial letters still list "factors keeping your score down" for people who have a perfect 850.
Yeah. I private emailed you about that special "chase scoring model."
I remember that!
I applied for a Chase card recently and based off the denial letter my chase proprietary score is 650 lol yet my others scores hover around 750. I wonder what causes such a big difference. I had to call reconsideration and was approved, I asked the agent about it and they were really vague.
That's a huge variance 😆 Congrats I'm getting an approval in the end!
Great Vid Mark & congrats. If I'm @ 5/24 & apply for the Marriott Bonvoy card, what do you thk my chance of approval is considering the Bonvoy is a Co-branded card. I have excellent credit & at 800+.Thks 4 your input..
Hi Kristophe - chances of approval would be 0% 😁 Chase only relaxed the 5/24 Rule for _select co-branded cards_ (i.e. Amazon Prime Rewards, all Southwest personal cards, and the United Explorer card specifically). Additionally, this relaxing of the rule may not apply to everyone.
@@MarkReese Thanks Mark 4 the advice/info..Looking 4ward to your next vid..
Hi Mark, Congrats!!
One quick question. Do you believe Chase gives the total credit line appx. half of the stated income? I heard that somewhere.
I Currently am at 3/24, 750, and under 5% credit utilization with 5 cards with Chase. But I do have almost half of my income as a total Chase credit line. Should I even bother to call and ask them to decrese some before applying?? Thanks!
Hey Kevin - I don't have enough data to support an answer, though it could be that way. However, I personally would not worry about decreasing credit lines. If you get declined due to too much credit already extended, simply call and ask them to reallocate from an existing card to open the new account. If you don't want to deal with the hassle of waiting & calling, then sure, you could ask for credit limit decreases.
I just tried what you did and it went to review again. For some reason he couldn't say he was recommending for approval like your rep did and I even asked him. He said he couldn't make those recommendations. Can you believe he went back to 2007?? Helloooo, financial crisis happened back then. Anyway, I should receive yet another letter soon. We'll see what they decide. The funny thing is that I was approved for a car loan a few years ago by Chase. Go figure. Thanks for all your helpful advice.
The process can vary. Good luck! 💯
@@MarkReese I got it approved!!! they called me back today to confirm I applied and processed it. I would've let it go if I hadn't seen your video!!
@@artaguilar7338 - Congrats! 😁🎉
Nice video. Have you heard about getting deny by Chase and then they ask you to send a copy of driver license and ssn ? Weird right? My friend went through that, and still got deny lol
I don't think I have with Chase, but that doesn't surprise me. I went through a similar process with Citi for my 1st card with them. Likely a part of their identity verification process. Bummer about the denial after all that 😆
@@MarkReese okay so it is normal. Got it. Thanks
Thank you
Of course!
DP: Got denied for this card today. (Opened the business version as a sole prop 3 months ago) Called their recon line and she said she saw the application but it was denied due to four reasons (too many inquiries (6), too many outstanding lines of credit ($180k, but $125k is an unused HELOC) high balance on cards (0.2% utilization when applied; paid entirely and was posted yesterday) and no bank account with chase). I requested a recon and they pulled my report and approved the account for $5k. Never been denied for a credit card. I was surprised I wasn’t immediately approved. Then I lowered my limits (by a total of $20k with chase) on my card to avoid this again. Probably wait 3 months before my next chase card.
Thanks for sharing your data point! Well done on turning the decision around, too! 🎉
Can you say more about lowering limits on chase? Im confused
Is there a way to find out the details regarding max rewards without signing up?... and, do you have a video going over the ihg card you signed up for?
1. Sure, check out the MaxRewards website. Here's the link: maxrewards.co/features
2. I signed up for 2 IHG cards. Here's a link to a video from ~ 4 months ago when all 3 IHG cards were announced: czcams.com/video/tY9nxMQx-8k/video.html
Great video and great info Mark thanks for sharing.i always learn something new..one question.i have 5 accounts on my report.4 credit cards and 1 line of credit with Fingerhut.. should I try to apply for a chase card or that counts for the 5/24 rule?? Thanks.
Hi Andre - It's my understanding that only _card accounts_ count towards the Chase 5/24 Rule. However, I cannot guarantee that a Fingerhut LOC will not count. Do you have a Credit Karma account? If yes, can you see your Fingerhut LOC, click on it, and does it show you what 'type' of account it is?
@@MarkReese hi Mark and thanks for Replying. about my credit cards on my report I can see that 4 are label as credit cards and my Fingerhut as Charge card..so hopefully it doesn't count as a normal credit card.thanx and have a good one
@@andreherrera8161 - Interesting. Credit Karma shows my Amex charge cards as 'credit cards.' Unfortunately, I don't have an objective answer for you regarding Fingerhut. If you decide to apply for a Chase card, let me know the result 👍
@@MarkReese Thanks and I will let you know.my score is 680 so I might wait a bit to apply..
Seems like chase likes to deny applications. I migrated here last year and waited for 12 months to build credit history. I applied for a the Flex and got denied, called the reconsideration line and got approved. Waited after 2 months, yesterday and applied for the Unlimited, and got denied again. I then called the reconsideration line again and got a approved with a credit limit triple than they gave me for the Flex. I had 740 credit score in all my applications with them.
Seems like Chase's algorithm may be too strict 😬 Congrats on both of those approvals in the end, John!
@@MarkReese they’re too strict. They even asked for my ssn, green card and driver’s license on my first application. 😂
Would it be easy to move around credit line through chase? I just got credit limit on CFU increased to $11800, and would love to have CSP as I’m in search for no foreign transaction fee card, but was denied a month ago because “You have too many account or too much credit”.
Yes, Chase makes it very easy to move credit lines around. Call the reconsideration line to see if it's not too late to still turn the application around using existing credit.
what is the 20/30 rule you spoke about at 6:10?
See this video starting at 2 min 14 sec 👍 czcams.com/video/mlGWG5btFmc/video.html
I was recently denied for the CFU of all cards and I’m waiting on the letter to call.
Good luck on the reconsideration call!
Let's go 💪
😎👊
Mark… I really want this card. I’m at 5/24, but my oldest inquiry in there is Aug. 3. When should I apply? I don’t want to miss this sign up bonus!
Hi Bretton - you need to be at 4/24 in order to be in a position for an approval. If you have 1 card that's about to turn 2 years old on 8/03, then you'll want to wait until your credit report reflects the new age before applying for the IHG Premier. This could be a day, several days, or several weeks later. I personally wait about 1 extra month to make sure my report updates.
@@MarkReese That’s what I was afraid of. I hope the sign up bonus sticks around long enough! Appreciate the input!!
Great video. How much does max rewards cost?
Thanks! The base level of MaxRewards is free. The Gold Level pricing is found here: help.maxrewards.com/en/articles/4655205-how-much-is-maxrewards-gold
I Just applied for a Freedom Flex and got denied.
I'll be calling them tomorrow after work to see if I can get approved.
The only reason I believe I got denied is because I have 7 months of credit history.
6% utilization, 767 FICO score, 0 missed payments.
Good luck!
Did you get approved ?
I recently applied for the United credit card and was under the 5/24
I’m currently under review. Is it too early to give them a call or should I wait until I receive the letter ?
Totally up to you! Waiting for the letter simply gives you more info going into the call, but there isn't an issue calling now.
Was this 2 chase card’s approval in the last 30 days?
Also would you know if the 2nd chase application would need to be an automatic “ reconsideration” call?
Yes, both IHG cards were opened with the same 30-day period. I don't have a way of saying the 2nd application will always require a call to reconsideration.
@@MarkReese I see I’m going to shoot for a DP I and already applied for a business chase card and I will apply for a personal card with in 30 days.
Does that 5/24 Chase Bank Include authorized user cards Or does it only include personal credit cards ???
Chase's system includes authorized user cards for 5/24. However, if you get denied, you can call the reconsideration line & mention which accounts are AU accounts and that you aren't responsible for them.
They asked me for proof of income in fax form 😭😭😭 my credit is 746 and they denied me for a freedom unlimited 😭 wtf is there problem bruh this crap is annoying.
Ah that's frustrating ☹
What income amount are you giving them? That was one of the most critical elements. Thanks
I don't discuss income on this channel.
I used to have a CSP pre-approved offer with 100,000 points a few months back. Now it is down to 60,000. The strange thing is that the other people in the family who have similar or lower credit scores and shorter credit histories, have pre-approved offers with 80,000 points! How could this happen? And is there a way for me to fix this?
Offers come & go as they're nearly all for a limited time. Not a way to change that.
@@MarkReese - I understand that. What I can't figure out is why their offer went down from 100K to only 80K but mine went down from 100K all the way down to 60K!
@@sudhisira - That's not something I have data to comment on ✌
Hi Mark, yesterday I applied for the CFF and didn’t get an answer after that. I called the reconsideration line right now with trouble because my English isn’t that good because I barely speak it, but the Specialist told me that it was turned down yesterday and he did a recommendation for approval. I’m at 3/24 with 2 Inquiries (1 being the CFF that I applied yesterday) and FICO Score of 753. Do you think that recommendation gonna help me or they gonna refuse it again?
Hi Yabriel - I don't have a way to know what Chase will do. However, if the agent recommended an approval, it sounds like you will get approved 👍
@@MarkReese Said and done. Just got notified that the application was approved, thank you for this video, I appreciate it a lot!
@@yabrielortiz2617 - Congrats! 🎉
Hello how could I send you messages or pictures of some personalized offers to some of my friends or neighbors from their credit cards ? Those offers are insane and I couldn’t believe them
Hi Basil - thanks, however that's not an option currently. Great to hear that people you know are getting targeted offers!
@@MarkReese ok one of them was 75000 points welcome offer on Amex BBP after spending 15 k in 12 months instead of the current 15000 points after spending 3k in 3 months ? Just wanted to let you know thanks
@@basilhamed3039 - Nice! I've seen discussions of that offer floating around. Great that it has a 1-year timeframe.
If you're going to apply for more Chase cards, I suggest joining Chase Private Client. It makes a huge difference. Until recently, I had 8 Chase credit cards and had to reallocate credit lines for the last 2 to get approved. Now I'm CPC and recently applied for the amazing Marriott Boundless 5 nights offer and was instantly approved with a 47k credit limit. I was really shocked 😲 probably also helped that I've set myself on a limit of 1 new card every 4 months. Makes it easy to stay under 5/24 and complete sign up bonus spending
Awesome, thanks for the tip, Tony! Congrats on that approval w/ that $47K limit!🏆
I have never been able to reach a reconsideration line.
At 8:45 I show the direct number for the Chase Reconsideration Line on the left-side of the screen (it's from the Upgraded Points blog post).
I got denied by chase because I had opened 5 credit cards in the last 48 months :( does that mean I can’t apply for the next 48 months to chase?
Do you mean that you opened 5 cards in the past 24 months? If it really is 48 months, then that's not a rule I'm aware of. Did a representative tell you that specifically?
Bro....can you call Chase for me and tell em to just let me out of 5/24 jail. I feel like if there's anyone that can talk their way into it it's you. I'll donate some UR points for the service!
Haha even I cannot escape 5/24 Jail 😄
For the reconsidering did they ask you more questions about your income?
I don't recall since I've done a number of these calls over the years. I do remember doing a verbal confirmation of income at least a couple times, but nothing more than that.
So your score must of dropped significantly from denial. What did you do to fix that? Same exact thing happened to us, but I’m not sure how to get those 79 points that we lost in the score from denial. Please help! Thanks
Hi Lana - there was no change to my score. A denial itself should not affect your credit score. What app / program were you using to check your score?
@@MarkReese all of banks, especially chase who denied at first. Now they approved him for the card but he already lost 79 points on his score. I don’t know how to approach this. Any advice? Thanks
@@lanamarx5277 - Do any of them have a page that shows you the reasons your score changed? Credit Karma is really good about that.
I’m really gonna consider trying my luck with the hyatt card. Im 13/24. Not to far from 5/24😂
You win the Comment of the Day Award 😂
Here's your trophy 🏆
@@MarkReese not too many can say they got that trophy 😂
I’ll take it
I applied and was approved for CSP in May. I've already met spend bonus. What chase card should I go with next. I'd like to keep stacking bonus points.
What's your 5/24 count? Your goal is to stack points for travel specifically?
@@MarkReese
1/24, yes I like Chase transfer partners, hotel s and airfare is my goal right now.
@@vigi401 - If you're able to qualify for business credit cards, I'd look into the Ink cards 👍
Hey! Glad you got approved! You were at 4/24 when you applied right? I’m thinking of applying for this card but currently sit at 5/24. You think they will approve me considering 750+ across all 3 credit scores and utilization rate at 3%?
I just don’t want to apply knowing I’m at 5/24 if I know they won’t reconsider a no in to a yes because of the 5/24 😭
Hi Vel - yes I was at 4/24. I don't recommend applying if you're at 5/24; that'll likely be a surefire denial 😬
@@MarkReese I thought they loosened up on the 5/24 rule with cobranded cards?
@@velmar3488 - No, only select cobranded cards (Amazon Prime Rewards, all Southwest personal cards, and the United Explorer Card specifically). The relaxed 5/24 situation is also not a guarantee, i.e. it may not apply to everyone.
@@MarkReese So the way you worded it I’m just making sure. Is the Amazon sig. visa one of the easier co-branded cards to get? Or the Same? Thanx
Once approved for the first card, did you automatically get approved for the other card or did you have to go through the same process?
Which cards are you referring to?
@@MarkReese IHG business and personal card. I’m asking what took place after the denial.
@@iraj.bolden2937 - I got approved for both 👍
They just tell me that they will review and submit again just to get denied again doesn’t work
Next step is to ask what the reason for the denial.
Wish a hard inquiry would fall off after 3 months if it was a denial or if you were approved it would fall off after 24 months.
That'd be a great change.
When I call the reconsideration line I get a automated response how do I get them to connect me to an actual person. I usually choose the credit application option then they look into my application and tell me that the letter I received in the mail is the lasted information they can give me.
Did you use the # on this page? upgradedpoints.com/credit-cards/chase-credit-card-application-status
@@MarkReese is it the personal card number or the business card number? I’ve only tried the personal card number.

@@acc6310 - Personal. The number provided in the Upgraded Points blog is different though.
If one gets denied from chase does it count as a inquiry ?
Yes. The inquiry takes place before a decision is made.
Chase Proprietary Score (CPS) 👀? Chase has their own internal scoring system too? This is good to know.
All the banks usually do.
They sure do 😄

@@AtomicNexus I guess so
It's good to know but seriously with that they are being racist and tag us like a product of their product.

Nope ✌️
I got the CSR at the end of June. I already had around $80k in credit line across 2 other Chase cards, a Navy Fed card, a USAA card, a Best Buy card, and an account we financed a treadmill on a couple years ago. I was quite surprised they not only approved me, but they extended me another $23,300 on my CSR which is almost double my next highest Chase card limit. My FICO and Vantage scores are around 790 and Chase had me at an 830 on their proprietary score.
Phenomenal! Congrats on the CSR approval & the solid credit score you've built. Well done, James! 🏆
@@MarkReese Thank you Mark. Now that I have my Chase Trifecta, probably looking into getting that Amex Trifecta next. Being military and getting annual and authorized user fees waived is a HUGE win. Keep putting out great videos.

Another DP: Applied for Chase Ink Unlimited and was immediately denied (applied for the CIU 2 months ago). Rep said 5/24, too many inquiries in past 6 months, amount of credit provided, and new lines of credit, etc. Went to recon and this rep played HARD BALL. They asked about my "pseudo" business: nature of business since inception, how long since established, how much revenue, how much product do you sell each month, where do you sell, and why did you all of a sudden open more credit cards (opened 7 in past 12 months) compared to prior years. After responding fluidly to their questions, they then told me I was at chase 5/24 which included business and personal cards, and they could not process the approval. I told her that I was an authorized user on one card which they further asked: are you responsible for the account to which I replied NO. Was then approved off of P2 20k UR point referral. Happy to have an additional line of credit with chase to "chase" the welcome bonus, but I think I need to break with Chase for a bit personal or business. Sounds like they may have me at 4/24 so I may be able to grab my last personal chase card, but the elevated sub for the amex platinum MS version looks to be calling my name.
Well done on getting that approval in the end! 👊
