    In the UK, vehicles towing trailers and vehicles over 7.5 tonnes are banned from the third lane, unless there is an accident or to pass a wide load.

    Try driving on a German autobahn like that. You'll get pulled over very quickly - if you survive the mayhem you'll cause. They are very strict on that rule, and for good reason: It is the only way to keep the roads safe for high-speed traffic where there are no speed limits. I've driven there quite a few times, and it is really impressive how polite, how observant, how thoughtful German drivers are. Americans...? Not so much. In fact, the exact opposite. The cult of "I'm the best, I'm the only one that matters" is strong in America, despite being so, so wrong.

      There might be less left lane campers but enough middle lane hogs. That is kind of OK if there are many trucks in the right lane, but you also see it on a sunday with an relatively empty Autobahn.

    • @robwhythe793
      @robwhythe793 Před měsícem +1

      @@reinhard8053 I never saw it on a German autobahn. But I did see their response once, just a few years ago, to a bad driver weaving between the lanes, jumping from gap to gap to try to get past heavy traffic and to jump the queues. In America, and in Canada where I live now, the response to such a driver would be for everyone to bunch up, to fill the gaps, in order to stop him. In Germany I saw people get out of his way and let him go, because they could see he was going to cause an accident and they didn't want to be part of it. The German driving ethos is so totally different to the North American one that it is difficult to see the parallels between them.

    I have to say that when I was a young tearaway, I got lots of warnings from very nice coppers, but then went off and did exactly the same thing once the chastening effect wore off. A fine and points _is_ a warning, that if you do it again, you're going to be on Shank's pony for a while. I would have been really pigged off, but sometimes we're just too stupid to learn the easy lessons - and I was entirely capable of learning, just too clever.

  • @martinhuhn7813
    @martinhuhn7813 Před měsícem +8

    Yep, and that´s, why it does not work in the US. People don´t properly learn the rules of the road in driving school. Then there is this problem everywhere, but instead of a public, nationwide or at least state-wide campaign to raise awarenes in combination with a systematic action of all cops in traffic controll, it is just the hobby of some regional sherrif, who seems to be well meaning, but could as well just stayed at home. Such problems must be recognized and solved, there is no point in picking out one in a million every now and then. People in Europe are not just different. There is a high degree of lane discipline, people almost never pass on the right and when there is a traffic jam, there will be an emergency lane - because issues with that were actively fixed on a society level, not because any of that is just in the nature of the people or because of a brave lonely law enforcer.

    While passing on the right is illegal in Europe, it does sometimes happen that someone is hogging the left lane there as well, and passing them on the right is required. Police is generally only going to give a fine for passing on the right if doing so was unnecesary, i.e. if there was space to pass on the left instead. In situations where someone is hogging the left lane police do realise that that's the root cause, and go after them instead. In the Netherlands the fine for unnecessarily driving in the left lane is €270 EUR / $290 USD.

    In Denmark, the second guy's car would most likely not be allowed to pull that load. I think that digger he had on the flatbed would put him over his limit...

    When we (the wife and I) first came to the US in 1993, we had to get an international driver's license. There was a flyer with information about where we were going. We learned that in the US on the highway or freeway you stay in your lane and only overtake when necessary, but besides us you can also overtake on the right side of the car because that is the American way of driving. After several holidays we have learned and adapted differently.

    One time I was diving in the US and I stopped for a break at a truck stop in Barstow. I was talking to a trucker and complaining about the 55mph speed limit and he smiled and said to just cruise at 70, don't do anything stupid and the CHiPS would leave me alone. I thanked him and when I left I got up to 70mph and ten minutes later I was pulled over. "Wow, thanks Dwayne!" I thought. They hadn't stopped me for speeding, just doing something stupid, wearing headphones. The cop was polite enough, not friendly, just polite and when he told me why he'd stopped me I told him that I could wear headphones where I came from. He asked me for my licence and I gave him my International Driving Licence that I applied for here in Australia that was supposed to be good enough in any country in the world. "Where's your REAL one?" He asked me. I gave him my REAL one and he looked like he though it wasn't any better than my International one. But, he let me go, telling me that it wasn't legal to drive with headphones there. I don't think he really believed me, but I was very polite the whole time.

    I think a huge part of the problem is that not only do you let your kids start driving way too young, but there's also no mandatory driving lessons with a licensed instructor, at least as far as I know, most kids are taught by their parents which means they automatically inherit all of their parents bad driving habits such as left-lane hogging!
    Where I live you can do the majority of your driving lessons with a parent or similar, but that person has to take a short course and I think even a test to make sure they're up to date on current traffic laws etc, and even then, you still have to do a certain amount of hours with a licensed instructor
    And also, the final driving test you do to get your license is WAYYY too easy over there! Driving is a privilege, not a right!

    Well, dangerous driving is relative. The most danger comes if you drive in a way the other people dont expect. If everybody overtakes on the right in the US, and everybody knows that, its not too dangerous. But in Germany for example nobody expects to be passed on the right, so people may not even look before changing lanes towards the right. And then its dangerous. The way people drive in different countries can be quite scary - but they think its completly normal. Just try driving in Brasil, or Turkey, or India. Then the US drivers will look like the best drivers in the world to you.... :)

    The rules of driving are all based on one essential principle. The safety of the people on the road. Everything else is not important. And no. Your right to go faster to your destination is not considered by anyone with more than one neuron in his brain. So if you care for your safety and others then keep to the right. That is, unless you have some homicide tendencies.

      Have you calibrated your car’s speedometer lately, like the cops do? Your speedometer might well be showing that you are travelling at the speed limit but actually you are going slower. Most cars’ speedometers overstate the speed being travelled.
      Also, don’t be so inconsiderate and/or selfish. You are not a cop (I presume) so it is not your job to do the policing, particularly if you are driving a car with an uncalibrated speedometer.
      An easy way to calibrate your speedometer is to have a passenger use a GPS-based speedometer app on their smart phone and read out the actual speed that you are doing, while you look and see what your speedometer is reading. Then, using the GPS-based speedometer app for reference, increase your car’s speed to the speed shown on the app that matches the current speed limit and note what your speedometer is now reading. Stick to that as your maximum speed in future in the appropriate speed zones.
      Please stay out of the overtaking lane(s) unless overtaking. The whole point of keeping the overtaking lane(s) free is to ensure that the traffic can flow feely and safely, for the benefit of everyone. That should be obvious.
