This is an amazing scene. These men know each other well enough that Steiner can issue a five-paragraph order with his eyes and a couple of quick nods of the head. The men who have the skills to deal with the sentries know who they are; not a word need be spoken. The soldier who just *appears* behind the sentry at 1:12 is *straight out* of The Teutobergerwald in the First Century, when German barbarian tribesmen fought the Romans, and utterly destroyed three Roman legions. I had heard that the Cherusci used to do this same thing to the Romans in the middle of the night. All you'd see is a pair of eyes right behind you, then you were done for. The slow motion time-dilation. I've seen this film several times; this scene is brilliant.

This scene is, IMHO, one of the most intense and thought-provoking scenes - and openings - of any film. The best feature of "Private Ryan" was right at the beginning with the very accurate re-creation of the Omaha Beach landing.
Had the Germans been better informed about and prepared for D-Day, then all five invasion beaches might have turned into similar, or even worse bloodbaths. Maybe it was a closer run thing than what popular history would care to admit, and there is a hint of this idea all through the film, despite the dominance of heroic stuff.
I also liked "Patton"for its accurate depiction of the crazy, unmanageable, but extremely effective General.

I saw the original release in summer 1977, my parents let me see it. And I snuck in a 2nd time to see it. Now I swear there are many scenes that have been cut from this film that were shown back then. There was a scene towards the 1st 1/4 of the film where russian women (i believe they were depicted as soldiers) were captured bathing in a stream. Does anyone remember this? It was an awful scene. If anyone remembers, you don't have to go into detail, because you knw what I'm talking about. It was as bad as any movie could have and took it to another level of debasing of humanity. Does anyone remember the scene I'm talking about? I'm 55 now. I was very young to see that movie. Too young for it. But I thought it was the most realistic war film I'd ever seen up to that time. The version I see now sometimes doesnt even resemble what I remember.

There were other scenes that have been removed involving combat with an mp40 while they retreated. Even the ending seems different than what I recall. But that earlier scene with the women bathing and then what happens after took it to another level, and then another level at the end of the scene. It was shocking, but effective for one to understand the total immorality of war. Total. Sam Peckinpah was the man that was capable of bringing that home.

@mikethebassguy I think you are a troll, but I cannot help replying :p The political spectrum is not based on big or small government policy; it is idealogy--progress versus conservation.

Neither side had the luxury. Both Hitler and Stalin was hellbent on using whatever was necessary to win and as long as they were in charge nothing was going to change.
However I'd say most Soviets (not only Russians) fought for their homeland and to drive out the foreign invaders who had attacked them first. Any other country would have done the same if invaded by a foreign force.

@vonRass 2. On the political spectrum i look at one simple thing, Goverment control. In both communism and nazism you have total goverment power putting them both on the extreme right. While the other extreme is anarchy which often leads to the later. I myself am a libertarian which would pretty much make us enemies in the world of "relocation and labor camps"

Без помощи Америки Россия проиграла бы. Американцы снабдили Россию материалами сотни тысяч кораблей! Армиям всех мировых держав понадобилось победить вермахт. Россия или Америка в одиночку, никогда бы не смогли сделать это!

@vonRass Reading some of your comments im just trying to figure out your angle... With all respect given answer the following questions: Are you a communist or Nazi? Do you believe that the holocaust actually did not happen? What is your view of the Nazi treatment of Jews and Russian POWs? Now remember before you start arguing that i'm simply trying to see what you believe...

@biggrigga I disagree... because still at that point fascism would still be to the left for the simple fact it wants to create an empire brining progress to its own imperial aspects.

Yes if anyone invaded my country and were as bad as the Nazis were to the Russians(not just the SS were behind this the Wehrmacht had a hand to play in atrocities) i would fight them tooth and nail but the Russians hated Stalin and his gang especially over the seizure of farms which caused 10 million people to starve to death and i always wondered why would Russians fight so hard for a government they hated? if Hitler had any sense at all he would have encouraged a coup in Russia
