  • Senator Ted Cruz questioned Norfolk Southern CEO Alan Shaw during a hearing following the Ohio train derailment.
Last month’s toxic Ohio train derailment in East Palestine was the focus of a hearing Wednesday before the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation about improving rail safety.
“The people of East Palestine have told me that they want their community back," Gov. Mike DeWine said as he appeared at the committee hearing remotely from the East Palestine High School library. "They want things to go back to the way they were before the train wreck. Members of the committee, Norfolk Southern has an obligation to restore this community. It was their train, their tracks, their accident. They’re responsible for this tragedy.”

One thing not addressed is the use of ONLY two people in a mile long train. What happened to cabooses with another one or two people to watch the train from the back..? Need to limit the length of trains and more workers on board watching..

I read on NS website that they did away with the caboose and train conductors in the caboose to save money! These greedy people are disgusting.

It's shocking that Norfolk Southern has pledged more detectors on the raillines, but apparently, any alarms/info go to "central" & NOT to the crew aboard the train in question? Really appreciate the testimony of Mr. Whitacker

Sen. Cruz should check on the location of the third hotbox detector. If you look at Google Maps, you can see it about 100 feet south of the East Palestine Fire Department building. That is about 4,000 feet from the point of derailment. The train was over 9,000 feet long. Given that the testimony from Mr. Whitaker at 6:00, the train crew only gets a message from the detector after all the cars have gone past. That means that the NTSB got the temperature of the third detector from the NS dispatcher in Atlanta after the fact.
The train derailed before the hotbox indication could be evident to the engineer.

THANK YOU, Mr. Whitaker!! Who would know best but the crew driving the trains. I wish you'd all strike and shut the whole system down. Then you might get you request for safety measures, fair treatment, fair pay and benefits. SOLIDARITY!

If a Person is NOT answering the Direct Question, You MUST interrupt them and either ask them again or show them how they are not Answering Your Question. Its not a time to be polite to them while they’re being ignorant towards not answering your question.

I'm an employee of norfolk southern and I'm not management I'm on the ground running the trains. I'll tell you first hand the problem hasn't been Alan Shaw it was his predecessor Jim Squire and Cindy Sanborn. Squire cut departments so thin it cause stress in the safety of the company for the sake of profit. Since Shaw became ceo, the company has made a turn for the better both in all areas including safety and in moral of the employees. Squire left Shaw to clean up union negotiations and a very depleted company.

i'm not far from the derailment in ayer Massachusetts that happened yesterday dumping some garbage cars in the river saying it was non toxic looking like the blue cargo containers seen from EP .it caused a major traffic jam in the twin cities because when 10 intersections are blocked in ayer it reroutes traffic and there was a few other distractions in the area i wont mention but the local news says the train was stopped and was there for some time like days and that's bs it was blocking the town intersections all of a sudden and they say it it just fell over and it was NS engines pulling CSX trains so that means an NS crew was running it when it happened but my point is our local media is lying or told what to say from NS or CSX or some board between oh and the tracks are new the whole area gets revamped time to time. it is an industrial area still with an army base a half mile away. there is a lot more i want to say but some one els needs to look into this and any other incident like this they are doing this stuff every day and no one notices until they have a life threatening chem spill in your back yard.
