Jestem z Krakowa. Kibicuję Wiśle K. Kiedyś jechałem z rodziną koleją nad morze z przesiadką w Warszawie. Po meczu Legii do wagonów wsiadło chyba tysiąc kibiców tego zespołu. Było tak ciasno, że matki miały problemy z utrzymaniem dzieci. Zrobiło się nerwowo, wielu nie wytrzymywało takiego natłoku. Padały niecenzuralne słowa. Matki zatykały dzieciom uszy. Pociąg powoli ruszył zostawiając całkiem sporą grupę kibiców na peronie. Kibice - szczęściarze, którzy byli w pociągu - zaczęli śpiewać - Mam tak samo jak ty, miasto moje a w nim ... Ludzie ucichli, rozmowy zostały zawieszone, pociąg odjeżdżał, tysiąc kibiców śpiewało - Najpiękniejszy mój świat, najpiękniejsze dni, zostawiłem tam kolorowe sny ... To wzbudziło zachwyt ludzi, mnie - kibicowi Wisły - ta chwila wycisnęła łzę. Słońce chyliło się ku zachodniemu horyzontowi. Atmosfera zelżała, wielu biło brawa. Ta chwila została we mnie na zawsze. Szacun chłopakom kibicom Legii.

Before listening a lil histry of the song. Niemen took 2nd place in festival in France as a songwriter, artist and performer. The prize was to record in French music company. He played a few songs in front of the officials and the lyricist Pierre Delanoe liked his song: Chciałbym cofnac czas (yes, it's great, he was right). He wrote french lyrics for that song- A Varsovie. Niemen got upset, bc he didn't want to sing about Warsaw to the theme of that song, so he took his guitar and within hours in a hotel room created the melody. He showed it to Michel Colombier (orchestra man, later composer) and he said, ok- we will put them with a fait accompli and he arranged the composition. Later polish words were added to a polish version (via phone) so that's how it was done. And Metalica also played it during their concert in Warsaw. I love this song, although Niemen has got a lot more to explore.

Opowiadał o tym w wywiadzie na yt- Dozwolone od lat 40, poza tym można o tym poczytać na internecie. Sama sie o tym dowiedziałam niedawno, bo mnie tak znów na Niemena wzięło i tyle nowych rzeczy się dowiaduję o nim. :)

Jednego serca is perfect, as it shows his vocal power. My fauvorite song of Niemen however is 'Pod papugami', with a perfect melofy and a lyric, that is particularily difficult to translate I guess.

You should definitely check out Ewa Demarczyk! Karuzela z Madonnami is one of her most famous songs.
'Sen o Warszawie' is from 1966. First version of the song was in French titled 'Varsovie', you can find on YT. Other early Niemen's songs: Wspomnienie, Pod Papugami, Czy mnie jeszcze pamiętasz. In 1970 Niemen recorded album Enigmatic with long(20-min) composition 'Bema pamięci żałobny rapsod' (lirycs are XIX century poem by Norwid). You can find this on YT. English version of the song is on album Mourner's rhapsody from 1974 also on YT. In 1971-98 Niemen recorded rock- avangard albums. Later he tried electronic music but it was not successful.

Niemen recorded one album with jazz group: Kurylewicz Warska Niemen Muzyka teatralna i telewizyjna 1971. There are some interesting vocal songs like Romanca Herubina. It should be also on YT.

The text is taken from the first chronicle of Poland written in Latin in the 12th century by Gall Anonim. All the voices in the choir you hear are Niemen's - he recorded the song himself with a 16-track tape recorder... I always have thrills going up my spine when I listen to it.
The meaning of the lyrics is more or less that our forefathers made do with whatever Fate brought them, but we brave the world in an attempt to do and to achieve more....:)

Czeslaw Niemen had also tried to make it in the States, there are a few English language songs of his from that period , although in my opinion thery aren't as powerful as those sung in Polish, he was too Slavic for the English speaking world. The complete album is on YT, it's called "Strange is this world", from 1972.

Hi, I just wanted to let you knwo that the way to read Polish "cz" is like "ch" in the word "chess" so "Czesław" would be close to "chess"+"lav" ("lav" with a "v" like in "slavic"). P.S. I'f you're looking for more Niemen's songs, I recommend "Bema pamięci żałobny rapsod".

When I was at school 40 years ago, we had a lesson with a gramophone to listen this song at school... to learn how to interpret old Polish classic XIX th century romantic poetry...
His name should be pronounced "Cheswaf" (this is the closest English transcription I can get), because the letter Ł makes the same sound as the English W and the Polish W makes the English V sound, but gets devoiced/unvoiced when it's placed as the last letter of a word.
