  • Honda had updated it's legendary Africa Twin for 2021 and in this one week long review I try and find out if after all these years, the Africa Twin still has it's Dakar Rally pedigree. And if it does, is that what we want in 2021.

    Owner of a 2021 Africa Twin MANUAL 6speed with Kappa Panniers, GIVI racks and SW-Motech Crash bars, RAM cell mount, CREE LED lights out front, Peg rubber delete, NO REAR upper case, Rear fender eliminator and currently sitting on 1900 miles! Hard riding in the Ocala Fl national forest with major sugar sand, Crazy mud holes and hella nasty technical areas. The bike is a beast. Period.
    I have been riding all over past 34 years(riding years) in The deserts of Az and NV, the PNW of Washington and Oregon, Tennessee mountain's, Ohio Valleys and now all over Florida on alllll sorts of bikes. I've owned BMW, Triumph, Aprilla, Suzuki/Yamaha/Honda and even a few Buell's Nothing compares to the new Twin, NOTHING. It Pulls EXTREMELY hard off the line with smooth as butter throttle response and excellent clutch engagement(mine a manual). The brakes are on par with any super bike, The weight is there, but when you rip it as it feels like a 250cc dirtbike. Nimble, balanced and very well mannered. Balanced like a dang prop. The Settings take some getting use to and to turn OFF the baby sitter settings, you have to hold down the arrows till it zeros each one out...bam unlocked and ready to rock!
    The bad?
    ITS A BIG AZZ ADVENTURE BIKE, its going to be a pig in the deep stuff.. layed mine down in the sand a few times and not a scratch or scuff, back still works :)
    The nanny modes are a little annoying and bit me a few times when I forgot to redo them after shutting the bike down..restart the process again..Takes about 20 seconds of your life to do...no spilled milk here. The carplay kicks off on its own sometimes(I think its my phone, its been wet a few times). The stock tires are GREAT on road but TERRIBLE in loose stuff...Get some dirt rubber if you intend on playing hard off the pavement, I ordered a set of Anakee wilds...badazz tires on my other dual sports. I do NOT baby my stuff and load it down pretty heavy as I like to go REAL adventure riding and its avg 85 miles one way for me to go anywhere to offroad. The price OTD was $16,340 after taxes, 400 dealer fee and my helmet. I figure after the 16341 mile on it, its alllll miles and smiles on the freeby scale. Bike is paid for and if ou can afford to get one, DO IT...Good luck finding a manual though, alot of DCT out there, NO manuals. I got mine as they rolled it onto the sales floor and 3 people came in trying to buy it while I was waiting to do paperwork. Glad I had cash in hand, it would of been gone and I would still be on my KTM 890 adventure R....Love that bike also, DO NOT LOVE THE MAINTENANCE or the repairs..NO DEALERS around me and parts are like finding gold. Lol. Happy trails everyone!

  • @scottbroyles2114
    @scottbroyles2114 Před 3 lety +12

    I own the same bike you tested, I agree about D not downshifting when it should, it lets it bog too much .. but a little press on the left thumb and it quickly downshifts, i find myself downshifting before passing vehicles or when i know i'm going to lug it around. . also to bypass that issue, drive around in Sport 2 (you press D 2x to get into sport mode, and then you have 3 different levels of this, holding down for 2-3 seconds will cycle you through the different sport modes) ... I also found the front end to dive a bit too much, adding some preload into the front helped this a lot.. I believe the pegs are in this position so that it's easier to stand offroad, they are however too narrow ..
    Overall not a bad review, but some of the nit's are from not knowing the bike well enough

  • @garthlundquist3623

    The vibration complaint is specific to the DCT model. It is caused because the standard Drive mode upshifts the transmission way too soon, dropping engine revs to 2000 rpm or so. This was probably done for emission and fuel economy reasons. The motor smooths out above 2300 rpm. Simply selecting any of the other, sportier drive modes eliminates the problem. Additionally this is a 270 degree parallel twin, not a boxer twin. The Honda 270 degree crank helps the bike find traction off road better, and was a conscious choice. The suspension on most dirt capable bikes comes on the soft side. Long range comfort and the ability to suit a wide range of rider sizes is the goal. Heavier or faster riders commonly fit stiffer springs and/ or revalve their suspension to suit. Our host owns a big GS, and the telelever front suspension on the BMW does not dive on braking, a wonderful thing. The tradeoff is less front end feel for the rider offroad, especially with the smaller 19” front wheel. The Honda is noticeably lighter than the GS, and performs better off road. Conversely the GS is faster, more powerful, and responsive on the road. If they could only shrink it down 7/8 size...

    I have this 2021 Africa Twin Adventure Sports DCT model. I really like the DCT. if I want to ride more aggressive single-track type riding. i will get a smaller bike for that. I recently was bombing down some dirt rodes with Pot Holes and somehow bent the back rim. it has no visible damage but is definitely bent. I also installed Fasst Company bars, now my heated grips do not work. this is probably due to me messing it up somehow. but overall for 80% on-road use with my girlfriend. i love the bike.

    Have to agree with a lot of what you've said. Test rode the same manual model in May and I was really surprised by how thumpy the engine was. And the switchgear is just too many buttons. I found it hard to ride smoothly at slow speeds due to the thumpiness. Good power, good position, good TFT, plush ride but definitely dive-y under heavy braking. Makes me miss my stolen GSA even more. Tiger Rally Pro is best of the test rides so far.

    I own AT'18 manual and Im 180cm/90kg (5'1ft). The AT comes with too soft front suspension if you want to pack it up with trunks but can easily be fixed by adjusting preload setting on front. With harden suspension gives lot of pleasure in fast cornering (even when packed up). The 2018 version comes with 95hp which doesn't sound impressing but is enough to catch up with GS 1200. The engine vibration is pretty subjective ... I didn't notice until heard in this review.
    It's a great bike designed to give 60% fun offroad, 40% on road. If you enjoy gravel paths and offroad deffo for you. If you prefer riding on road go with GS 1250 or KTM 1260.

    Great review. Not tried the 2021 ATAS, but have ridden the previous incarnation. Does the display still have a "windows 95" boot speed? In my country the price is high. Too close to sensible competitors. Had a 2016 1200GSA at time of testing. Liked the ATAS though. But not enough to buy it. Today a KTM 1290Super Adventure S is in the stable, that I jokingly call an Africa Twin on a very large dose of testosterone :)

    Great review.
    You forgot to tell you can always shift up en down manually by the flippers on the left handelbar (even when driving in automatic mode).
    And beware of the 2 recalls; oxide in the fuelpump/tank, and a faulty ABS module.
    I had exactly the same model for 6 months en did about 7100km on it. I traded mine in for a BMW R1250RT because of those recalls and because my bike pulled to the right a bit, quite annoying. And it lacks of torque (especially compared to a BMW 1250 engine).
    Great fuel milage (did 575km on 1 tank) and great plush suspension.
    Oow, and it made a annoying clicking sound above 23 degrees celsius when giving throttle (possibly the butterfly/throttlebody).

    Great perspective. Appreciate the unique point of view, well done. Only comment, seems like you may have not adapted the DCT to your preferences. I have only ridden the manual so not much comments from me except the engine was rather low vibration for a twin. Edit: ok, just rode, again, my buddys 18 AT. I think I have found the vibration you refer to. Yes, ok, fair comment. Not extreme, to me, but it is there under conditions you describe. Really disappointing was the overall feel of the bike above 100 kph. Buzzy. Windy. Finally, I did find a couple road conditions where we did a bit of a pogo hop on the suspension. Otherwise, very luxurious ride - but clearly - on the soft side. That 21 front does not help - on road.

      For some silly reason Honda decided to use the indicators as running lights. They are both on (slightly dimmed) whenever the ignition is on. I’m not happy with this idea, both my 1000AT and CRF250 have this dangerous wiring idea. They only flash when you use the indicators, the flicker is only one the video.

    • @mdc503
      @mdc503 Před 3 lety +4

      The LED indicator lights operate at a certain frequency that often synchronizes with recording equipment. Kind of like matching the shutter speed. Similar to watching video recordings of helicopter blades or airplane props in motion. The flashing is an optical illusion. CZcams search “Helicopter shutter speed” or “LED flicker”.

The seat eventually broke my "ass" in, lol, and I enjoy it finally. "Sport 2" in city. Lazy "touring" on hiway, and manual shift (override) down when need some quick speed. Mitas EO7 tires, and Mazinga internal tank fuel filter (for magnesium weld flaking issues) are my go to updates.We do two week tours on these rides across Canadian provinces, finding them very capable. Touring positives vs GS - well, if you are touring somewhere that you can only find crap / low quality gasoline - you can actually still run the Africa Twin. But the BWM needs higher octane fuel. So , the BMW is a “first world only” Adventure tourer. the Africa, all world tourer.

I watch a back to back review with a GS1200 against a original R80GS and the R80GS seemed to be better off road. I think manufacturers are losing the plot with huge bikes off road.

    Sounds like someone is used to the sowing machine that is a R series BMW? Here is AUS, Honda & Yamaha = getting home, give it a bath see you next weekend. BWW, KTM = credit card and a ramp for the Ute are highly recommended. Gives you lots of quality time in the shed having beer while you attempt to fix the broken bits or if you own a BMW waiting for it to be returned from the dealer. My 2021 Africa twin L model reminds of old KTM 990 except that it works. Every time. Enough said.

    A great, honest review. I have a ‘19 Gold Wing Tour DCT and the DCT on that bike is brilliant. I don’t know if I would take that option on this bike. Too much customization for me and the display is blah compared to the GSA. Lower seat is a plus for me and seems there is enough value for the money. Would be nice to have a one-manufacturer garage, but I think I would prefer a GSA for this type of bike. Well done.

    It's a Honda. What did you expect?
    Honda is not known for building ground-breaking or extremely exciting motorcycles. Reliable, last for ever, won't let you down, will do everything well, not exceptionally well...
    For anyone who needs excitement, get a KTM, Aprilia or a Ducati. Those motorcycles are the true definition of "adventure". Getting back home on those is sooooooo exciting. In the Ducati case, if one can leave is already a victory.
    Could it be that the vibrations are a result of the EU5 restrictions in the exhaust?
    About the power Honda could have squeezed out of the engine... Again, it's a Honda. More power vs more reliability, Honda is a conservative manufacturer, always goes for more Km instead of more Kw...
    Great job mate.👍

    This has now become a BMW GS comparison channel. He compares all bikes against what he assumes is the best ADV bike. As we all should know the best ADV bike depends on the person. Age, size, skill etc all determine what bike is best for an individual. He has become the typical BMW owner who feels the need to justify why he bought his bike. Which brings me to my next point. He calls the AT value for money. Yes, it is when compared to an extremely and unnecessarily overpriced BMW. He makes the AT sound like it is cheap and cheerful. I am going to have to unsubscribe due the bias view. Reviewing the bike based on the manufacturer’s direction for the bike would be preferable to reviewing based on one persons riding preference. If he wants to be an international bike review journalist then he needs to leave his biases aside. Otherwise he might as well just post on BMW fanboy sights. Yes, I ride an AT so this comment could be determined as biased. However, I have noticed his tendency to compare bikes to his own personal bike in the past. This video just underlined the issue.

    • @LongWayHome
      @LongWayHome  Před 3 lety +7

      We are all a little biased in life, of course. It’s human nature. I am however aware of it and everything I say in any review is with knowing that at the back of my mind. The reason I compare certain aspects of other bikes to the GS is because they are the most well known and sold model of adventure bikes, so people will more easily be able to understand the comparison. In reality I don’t really ride my bike anymore, since reviewing other bikes takes a lot of time and effort. Haven’t even seen it in the past month :) ….and no, I don’t think the GS is the best thing aince sliced bread; i can definitely find a dozen things that i hate about it, but it defintely is a benchmark in the adventure market and comparisons are done with benchmarks. Imo.

    • @Paulie44
      @Paulie44 Před 3 lety +1

      I disagree with your comment. I’ve owned the previous version Africa Twin DCT version for 3 years and a lot of his comments are true for the previous version too. I wouldn’t buy another AT again due to quality issues (rust showing through paint from a few months old) and the crazy amount of wind buffeting I suffer at anything above 40mph. I don’t ride off road and use the AT mainly for touring and agree that the seat is ridiculously uncomfortable, even after 15 minutes. Footpegs definitely in the wrong position; try carrying a pillion and setting your foot down with the AT…it’s near impossible. Anyways, even though I currently own the AT I can be objective, whereas a lot of folks will buy a bike and cannot accept any criticism, as though they need consensus bias and block out anything other than positive comments to confirm they’ve made the correct purchase.
