  • @jordanm5410
    @jordanm5410 Před 2 lety +677

    (SPOILER ALERT) Important thing to note about this song: You find these two apostles in the world alone at first, then together, then together again in a large cathedral room in one of the final areas of the game. They also become deadlier once they reach 50%, which creates an interesting dilemma for the player whether to rush to kill them or keep them above that threshold.
    The last time you encounter them, a new mechanic is introduced: once the player defeats 1 godskin apostle, the other will resurrect it. The theme from 0:40 to 2:40 plays on a loop until you kill one, but the moment one resurrects the other, the drop at 2:45 occurs. This is one of the most "oh shit" moments in the game and a lot of that is due to this absolutely breathtaking theme and their decision to trigger the track switch at this moment. A great example of how video games can bring out the ability for music to hit even harder when tied to a specific event triggering in-game. Also, the climax of the first 'track' at 2:01 is much slower and more deliberate, but the 2nd track (after the resurrection mechanic is revealed) at 4:24 is much faster and more hectic. The stakes are higher, the fight has much more going on, and your resources are dwindling fast. There are a lot of 'phase changes, music changes' examples in video games but this one is so organic it really resonated with me.

    • @nolanstrife7350
      @nolanstrife7350 Před 2 lety +9

      If you're talking about Godskin Duo, it's not exactly that. I was lucky enough to put both of them to sleep with sleep pots in a way that lined them both for a sweet-sweet Rotten Breath, killing one instantly and the other a little bit later
      To my surprise the game gave me a finger and resurrected one of them after a while. Yes. MoFo just appeared out of thin air. Calling them Duo is a lie, it turned out, since you need to kill like 3.5 apostles to beat the fight
      And the best tactic is, it seems, to just leave one of them alone (I usually try to not hit the noble, since his stage 2 is very hard to dodge) and focus on the other one

      @@nolanstrife7350 Yes thats true, I didn't want to go into too much detail but the resurrection mechanic still goes on if you kill them both at the same time. @@nolanstrife7350 Funny thing is they were harder for me than any other boss solo, but I decided to do some coop to farm rune arcs since I realised rune arcs were literally just humanities and I hadn't been using them because I didn't understand how they worked, and with another player to tank it was kinda shameful how easy it was to hit both of them at once with comet azur and destroy them almost instantly. I stopped doing coop soon after because I felt like I was either uselessly plinking the boss while the host got shredded or ruining the fight with comet azur, no matter which boss it was. Specifically there was a cutscene for Godfrey so it must have been the host's first attempt, and I figured I could at least rush him to 50% HP or something to offset the larger healthbar since the host summoned two of us, but before my hidden tear wore off he was already dead anyway. Made me feel bad enough that I don't want to touch coop again.

    If you beat the Godskin Apostle in Caelid Divine tower and read the lore of his armor (as well as from other items) you learn that the Blackflame that they use as a weapon was developped by a being called the Dusk Eyed Queen (most likely the queen of this entire Godskin covenant) and that this weapon was made specifically to kill gods.
    There are two main representant of this faction in the game (not counting minions, only bosses) the Apostle and the Noble, their weapons are called respectively Godskin Peeler and Godskin Stitcher, both of them are able to manipulate the Black Flame.
    From these informations we can deduce that these guys used to run around burning gods to death with the Black Flame and skinning them to make their suits.
    I really hope one of Elden Ring's DLC will have them as the center picture with the Dusk Eyed Queen as final boss of that DLC.

    Everytime I hear this OST, I get PTSD because I remember the countless amount of times I died from Godskin Duo. Eventually, after beating them I had a wave of nostalgia flowing through me because the entire boss fight was a homage to the very first obstacle of Fromsoft games, fighting Ornstein and Smough. Ill never forget this piece just for this sole reason. I recommend Ornstein and Smough's OST too, they sound just as good.

Then I will throw one more suggestion at you, Ace Combat Zero - "Zero", It mixes flamenco with certain elements of opera and electronic music in an absolutely beautiful dynamic. Hearing your take on that would be very interesting, I love flamenco personally and its an extremely isolated form of music in my experience, not often does it branch out and mingle with other things and the way they managed it in that track leaves me with such a smile on my face every time. Thanks for all the videos so far regardless!

    As always, great reaction and excellent analysis. Earning your stripes in the field of opera, which draws in a lot of ways on the tradition of liturgical/religious music, really came in clutch here. I'd say that Beast Clergyman is, in a lot of ways, the thematic and melodic counterpoint to Godskin Apostles-- there's a similar sense of the sacred, but it's underpinned by melancholic tragedy and a notion of actual devotion and sacrifice, rather than the rank perversion of the holy that are the Godskin Apostles. Which is a long-winded way of me saying that I can't wait for you to react to Beast Clergyman and Starscourge Radahn lol (honorable mention to Dragonlord Placidusax, as well).
    If and/or when you make it though the whole of the Elden Ring OST, or at least the bulkier, more substantial tracks, I'd also love to hear an analytical take from you on the themes/strengths of the score as a whole, since I think it gains something in terms of depth when all of the pieces are considered in light of driving towards a central theme, which is something you touched on in your Elden Beast reaction: the tensions between duty, sacrifice, free will, and personal ambitions and desires.
    I don't know, man; I just love everything about this game, probably way too much.

    I legit think this is my favourite Elden Ring theme song, that or the main theme. But this sounds like a twisted waltz when it really kicks in. The bells, the violins and the choir just meld so well and they made the song in such a way that I could never tire of it, which is an art in itself and a necessary thing when if comes to game design as you'll likely hear it a lot, whether through deaths or replaying the game so it's got to not drone on.

    The Godskins are the children of the Gloam-Eyed Queen, the original Godskin and the antithesis of Marika. The Gloam-Eyed Queen was known as an Empyrean, a being born of a single god or has the ability to rival god. Their lore is very little, but the art of the black flame was known as the god killing flame, it's power drew directly from the Rune of Death, or Destined Death. If I had to imagine, the black and white fire we see being used used to look like Death's red flames. The Godskins themselves are powerful, but since Death was locked away, there power has been forever sealed.

    To me, this theme has always sounded as if someone was tasked to fight some form of fallen angel. The tone screams not only this underlying resentment, but of excessive betrayal. As if someone was plotting your downfall and was willing to do whatever it took, use any trick or accumulate any power they needed.
    The second half and it's intro sound like "triumphant evil" stating that whatever sins they committed in the past, they succeeded. The overture will always be fun to me, because in this part of the game my character had its own development. I used to be a strength warrior, then found solace in fire to wield a magma dragon's weapon. I grew more into fire, molded myself by it. My character even went so far as to consuming the hearts of dragons for mastery over magma and an ulterior form of the same creature slain for the weapon I took. The character even joined apostates to accumulate power with them. A man-serpent at his side, fighting on all fours and belching magma. It was two demons vs two monsters with no humanity in sight.
    You should listen to God Devouring Serpent from this game and see if Godskin Apostles is still first in thematic repulsiveness.
