  • My arrangement of Separated by the Storm from the soundtrack of Ori and the Will of the Wisps, originally composed by Gareth Coker.
When making these videos I often default to transcribing the original music note-by-note, but often it creates a very simple/boring arrangement which ultimately miss many of the nuances, as is the case here. While I'm not a fan of changes which deviate from the original in order to "make it work for piano", I am trying to get better at coming up with revisions which sound as close as possible to the original by utilizing the piano to its fullest extent.
For this piece I made a number of additions/changes, the most noticeable of which is the section at 2:34. In the original, we have the strings playing the sustained chords and another instrument I can't identify playing a simple accompaniment. The accompaniment is barely noticeable and only serves to act as a background for the strings. I wanted to keep this, but keeping that contrast is very difficult since piano notes drop off over time. Instead, I opted to bring out the accompaniment and make it more interesting while also making sure it matched the chords. Note-wise this change is close to the original, but it also gives a lot more opportunity for musicality - notice all of the nuances in tempo and dynamics, which are just as important in terms being faithful.
    Other changes include:
The two right hand notes at 0:14 - I think something like this is necessary to keep the listener's attention, given the length of the pause.
The left hand eighth notes at 0:20 - This ensures that this phrase isn't just a repeat of the first time it's played, as the additional notes can be used to more clearly express dynamics and tempo. This applies to the subsequent phrases as well - in particular, there's a much larger contrast when it's not included at 1:00.
Performance-wise I think it's okay overall (by my standards), but there's a few areas that could use more practice. The left hand at 0:20 should be more pronounced, the tempo of the section at 1:40 should be more relaxed, and the jump at 3:10 is rushed.

Love it. All the other covers I’ve seen on omitted a lot of the beginning and ending parts. This was beautiful!

Woah, I love this, wonderful adaptation!
I really love that you explained your thought process in the description. I love reading that kind of stuff.
And I think you really stayed true to the original. I also tend to want to stay as close to the original as possible, so I appreciate that.
(Weird comparison, but it feels kinda like how with movie adaptations of books you need to focus more on the message and vibes than actually copying the book directly.)
