  • Trey Edward Shults' Waves marks the director's third feature film and it's undoubtedly one of the best movies of 2019. Waves 2019 stars Sterling K. Brown, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Taylor Russell, and Lucas Hedges and the new A24 movie is a heartbreaking yet uplifting tale of love and forgiveness making for the most human experience of the year. Simply put, Waves is a masterpiece and director Trey Edward Shults is a filmmaker who cements himself as one of the best working today. Every since seeing it at TIFF 2019, Waves a24 has been a film that's stuck with me. In this Waves movie review, Griffin explains Why WAVES Is A MASTERPIECE!

      The father’s character was so upsetting he never took full responsibility for what he did to his son. Even when he was trying to check in with the daughter he expressed his regrets but never came out and voiced how he pushed Tyler over the edge. That was unsettling.

    • @RJ-qs6nm
      @RJ-qs6nm Před 3 lety +187

      @@2buscuits because he's imperfect, because he's a human being. The father is not a bad guy. He pushed his son too much, yes, but in no way is that an excuse for the sons actions. The son isn't a bad guy either, he was lost and made a mistake that cost him everything. Same thing applies to people criticizing the second half because the daughter needs to find peace in a man..
      If you haven't noticed, this is why the film is brilliant. None of the characters are necessarily good or bad, perfect or evil. They are simply human. It is a constant theme in the movie - there is a lot of pain and mistakes that happen in life which cannot necessarily be blamed on one sole person or reason. Things just happen.
      But in the words of the father, all we have is now.

    This is a perfectly, beautifully written review.
    "Waves" is both a traumatic experience and a healing one. I'm so glad I caught it on the big screen -- to be honest, there was a moment when the experience became so intense, I thought, "I can't do this" and nearly walked out of the theater. But luckily I didn't, because once the film had seared into me like a hot knife, it provided the balm I needed to heal from that very injury. And I'm pretty sure I'm seeing it again tomorrow.
    What I can't for the life of me understand is how it was completely passed over by the Academy. It should have been nominated in every category.

    My hunch is that this film will find its audience. It got lost at the end of the year, despite the good reviews, and needed awards attention it didn't get. But people will eventually see it and remember it. Shults is one of the children of those '70s New Hollywood filmmakers (Altman, Bogdanovich, Malick, Scorsese, Allen, Schrader, etc.), some of whom are gone now, others still with us but with more behind than ahead. It's great to see talented young men and women tending the flame in their different ways, telling stories about complicated people.

    I think the unironic and sincere use of bible quotes in key moments of the film (sermon at the begining - conclusion of the conversation between father and daughter) really needs to be mentioned. It really reenforces, why people do lead a life in faith, which is so often covered up in politics and hatred, forgetting what it can do and mean to people. This is rarely ever shown realistically in movies sadly.

Every member of that family, in their stories, can be very relatable in a way. It has been about two years since I seen Waves, but I do remember that last act made me weep. This was a good film.

    everything about this film is so perfect and so so real. from the music and the way that when they are sleeping the phone is on the charger, even the tiny moment when the dad was playing with the cat even that was insanely good. don't even get me started with the music the music is so perfect its hard to believe a film could be so beautiful. the aspect ratio makes it feel so personal and honestly i don't think ill ever feel this way about a film ever again. IFHY by tyler playing while he rages after the words "its over" is something ive done and i could feel it i could really feel it. oh and ITS SHOT IN MIAMI ???!! its so real. so fuking real.

    Esta película merecía más reconocimiento, me dejo un sentimiento confuso de vacío y tristeza porque es cierta parte siento que toca temas que casi la mayoría ha pasado, y ni que hablar del casting, sinceramente una obra de arte

    This and "The High Note" were surprisingly good, to someone who was first initiated by Waves, then saw Harrison in "The High Note", and damn is he an amazing singer! 🤯 Between this and the the other film, I definitely want to see him in more.
    And of course I'm going to keep an eye out for more from Shults.

    I can’t help but compare this movie to Moonlight. I know they are two very different stories but I feel like they’re similar in that they both explored childhood trauma and tragedy. Idk why but Moonlight spoke to me way more than Waves... something about the direct and specific follow through with the characters. I kept feeling like I didn’t know the full emotional and motivational story of what each character was going through in Waves as many scenes built conflict and then just cut to another scene without (or with delayed) explanations of how the friends and family were effected...

Masterpiece is the best way to describe this, I still think about it every now and then... yep I'm gonna go watch it again
