- Tidewater Virginia blues musicians - guitarist John Cephas and harmonica player Phil Wiggins - play a version of Richmond Blues (circa 1989). Video is courtesy of Houseparty Productions, Takoma Park, Maryland.
Phil Wiggins put on a harmonica workshop at either the 2006 or 2007 Richmond Folk Fest. He gave out free harmonicas to everyone sitting nearby. I still have mine to this day.
so sorry to hear of the recent passing of the late great Phil Wiggins, gone home to be reunited with your partner in blues music, Bowling Green John Cephus R I P two of the greatest q
Cephas may not be with us today but his music is with me forever. Being a young man, I'm finding my age group straying away from music like this and i hope it stays alive!
Idgaf nobody blows like phil wiggins ive listened too them all hes way ahead of his time.
Phil Wiggins taught me the essentials of harp playing at Elkins College in the 1980s. I never got to his level, but good enough to have years of great music fun. He is awesome!
Never heard of either of these musicians. How could the be possible?😢
I could listen to these two people for hours or until I pass out.
They were this age when I saw them in Australia. They were selling tapes at the exit.Historical Bluesmen. This goes on my 'Best of Best' playlist. Thank you for posting.
Was lucky enough to see these guys play. Thank you for your music and the education you gave. RIP john cephas, your legacy lives on. Like Otis Spann says, "The blues never dies." Thumbs up all!!
Oh man I could listen to this all day long !!!!
Same here :-)
Ah. I like this Piedmont Blues. To sad, that John Cephas has left us forever.
Love Phil! I have had the pleasure of performing with Phil (and Billy Branch, Sam Lay, Corky Siegal, Jim Schwall and Rollo Radford) before 3,000 happy people at Chicago's Symphony Center.
Rest in Peace, John Cephas!
I got to see them in person in 2003 just an outstanding duo. The music speaks for itself
Rip grandpa a legend
I saw them in Australia in November 1990. I'll never forget them! Just love them 💕

They are amazing! I want to dance with them!
Easily, beyond debate, the very best harmonica player I have ever had the pleasure to experience
R.I.P John Cephas. I loved the Piedmont Blues, like you were playing it.
I agree, Phil Wiggins is a virtuoso and such a nice human being. My favorite harp player as well.
Bro you took the words right outta my mouth there is no best because theres always someone better. But holy shit this man definitely can stand his ground with the best of them. Nobody plays like phil hes original he can fucking blow that thing like i aint never heard different style for sure.. hes definitely my idol on harmonica shame hes not more mentioned in blues genre he deserves his credit..

I was john's private student/ protege for 5 years and it is baffling to me how I had no clue (even tho Im a trained jazz piano player) what he weas doing. But after about a year I coulod see pattern after pattern. I want to honor him as always, by teaching young players, about this music....
Travis picking will help you learn this also listen to John hurt
Fantastic!!!

How long did these guys play together? Their mutual understanding is awesome. The harp is the perfect accompaniment to the voice blending exquisitely.Miraculous!

Beautifull! Sonny and Brownie in younger !
Just wow, cant get it out of my head. Is that an e harp played in 2nd position in the key of a?
Hot damn that was good. Rather gives the lie to the notion that you have to fingerpick using at least two fingers and a thumb!
Fantastic harmonica playing too.
Top notch.
Very true. I picked with thumb and index for many years but I just switch to thumb and two finger because my index ain’t as quick as these old guys.
@@tylerhurd9569 How's it going?
@@tomgreeves9248 pretty good. Just got done learning this tune. I almost got it note for note but the way Cephas phrases the notes are difficult.
@@tylerhurd9569 Oddly, I think the best guitarists sort of have their own sense of time!
Rather than playing like metronomes.
The [indecipherable] at 2:37 - I think he says North 'Lina (from Carolina)
