      Thanks for the encouragement! I try not to feel guilty about it. We don't want to be wasteful but I need a balance so that I can actually enjoy my vacation as well. When I was growing up camping, we always brought re-usable dishes and spent time washing them after each meal. When I first went with my in-laws and saw how my mother-in-law did it, I thought it was a brilliant idea and would ease one part of the work - I was sold, especially with little kids. My mother-in-law would actually save up plastic utensils and such throughout the year from fast food restaurants so that they would have enough for their trips so she wasn't actually buying any :)

    Might want to add some dead sticks between the rope and the tree trunks to keep from damaging the tree bark. You can use wire from a hanger to make a paper towel holder if you forget to get the roll on. Great video! Wish I had this kind of stuff to watch when my kids were little. Enjoy theses times with them, they don’t last long enough.

    Tip. One piece of rope/paracord et cetera, ran through the paper towel roll -- use double prusik knots attached to the main line to secure the roll and will eliminate the need for the clothes line clips as the prusiks can be adjusted as the roll is reduced in diameter.

    I was so excited to see that this new video about camping was available!! I have really enjoyed your videos regarding packing for camping, your tent set-up, and your campsite set-up. Me and my family are going on our first camping trip together ever in a week and I am SO EXCITED!! My girls are excited, too, well 2 of them LOL 1 is a little nervous, but she will be fine! We have 4 girls (9, 7, 7, 1.5). My husband isn't quite excited, but i'm hoping that he will enjoy himself once we are there and having fun as a family together. We are starting with a rustic cabin at a NJ state park on a lake. Are you planning to do a video on your breakfast, lunch, and dinner options throughout your weekly camping trip? I have been searching online and pinterest and have a ton of great ideas to try (we are going to try to cool over the campfire lol) but I was curious and hoping to see what you guys do! Thanks for sharing!

    • @SaraWeston
      @SaraWeston  Před 5 lety +1

      I hope you have a great time on your trip! Your kids are at great ages to enjoy the outdoors. (My kids are 9, 7, 6, and 3 and they all look forward to camping each year.) I'm hoping to get a video out next week on our breakfasts and lunches. I didn't end up filming any of our dinners this year due to my morning sickness. My mom actually took care of all of our dinners and she cooks differently than I do while camping so it wouldn't have been a good representation of how I do dinners. Also, I typically got really sick in the evenings so filming just wasn't an option this time around. I will say, I try to keep things simple with the least amount of work at the campsite as possible. So I try to do as much prep work at home before we leave as possible and freeze as much as possible so it helps things to stay cold in the ice chest longer. (I bring up almost all pre-cooked meats and freeze them as I don't like dealing with raw meat while camping.) It may be different for you as you're in a cabin and possibly have access to an actual kitchen but that's what works well for me while camping without a kitchen. So possible dinner meals include (along with a veggie that is either frozen peas, frozen corn, or canned green beans, typically): 1) Rotisserie Chicken from Costco (pre cut-up and frozen) & Instant Mashed Potatoes (I typically do this on our first night as it's simple and I don't feel like doing much after setting up camp), 2) Pre-cooked sausages & instant mashed potatoes (from Costco) 3) Spaghetti & Meatballs, 4) Tacos/Burritos, 5) Tri-Tip & Rice or Instant Mashed Potatoes, 6) Freeze-Dried Meals (I've gotten these at Costco and bring up a few), 7) Hot Dogs and Chili (my kids are finally old enough to roast their own hot dogs over the fire and they enjoy doing it so this is actually a newer one for us). I'm drawing a blank right now on other dinner meals I do but I'll list them for you once I remember them :) I tried pizza rolls last year and they didn't turn out very well. I also tried having them completely prepped at home and frozen and that may have been why they failed. The dough burned to the foil. Maybe if I had put some oil on the outside of the dough before wrapping them in foil they wouldn't have burned. I just really didn't want to bring all the various ingredients to make them on the site so that's why I did them early. I will also repeat meals if we're there for a while and I sometimes have enough to do leftovers on a night. I try to bring up a meal that is completely canned so that if something happens we can always take it back home with us and it wouldn't have gone bad. Where we camp (at Hume Lake) there is a Christian camp a 10 minute walk from the campground and they have food for purchase there so there have been nights when we'll go in to "town" for burgers or pizza instead of cooking. Having a canned meal is as a "just in case" meal is also good if we've been out all day away from the campsite and end up finding a place to eat in the National Forest on our way back. We could have used that meal but have the option not to as well. In general, I try to avoid cooking over the campfire myself as I don't have the patience for getting a fire started and waiting for the coals to be ready. Both my in-laws and parents do cook over the fire; my father-in-law uses a cast iron skillet a lot and my parents bring up their own coals and grill (just the part you use to cook on - can't think of what it's called) and cook that way. I hope this is all helpful!

    Like your camp setup. If you take the knobs off of the stove and clean up valve seat and lubricate with silicon you will find that you will have much more control over turning the valves down. Avoid petrolium lube products. While your kids are young, don't apologize for using mostly burnable paper products. As they get older, get yourself a number of plastic 12 qt. dish pans that nest together and setup 3 for washing. Put some in the first and then rinse water in the next two and then use the remainder (I use 6) to place dishes and pots and silverware in to dry. Lastly, if you are inclined to, look for a used (in good shape) Coleman white gas suitcase stove such as a 413, or preferably, a 3-burner one (426) that can be cleaned/restored/repainted and then get a propane adapter. You can also get a propane hose and utilize a larger 5 or 10 lb. propane canister instead of the disposable ones. Thanks for the great tips!

    Really truly great video! I've seen your other videos on how you pack for your camping trips you're very thorough! I had a camping trip plan 4 weeks ago and I had to cancel it because things came out. I have not reschedule yet. And it's a good thing that we didn't go on the week that I had planned because we had very severe thunderstorms. We live in Florida and it rains a lot. So we're going to hold off until things cool down a bit. Summer in Florida can be brutal. I was so excited when I saw your latest video on how you set up your tent for your little ones. Well my wife and I we don't have any little ones it'll just be the two of us so life will be a lot simpler. I was not expecting any camping videos from you because of your pregnancy. I wasn't sure if I was going to even go camping this year but I made it! It was a struggle at times for sure with my nausea but we got through it (with lots of help!). I didn't get to film all the videos I would have liked because of it but I was happy I got a few at least. Also I have another follow-up question about what sort of games/toys, etc. you bring to keep all of your kiddos entertained for a week. I have quite a few things set aside to bring in addition to their bikes, but I was just seeing if you had other options that I do not have. I have bikes, water gun fight stuff, hiking, swimming in the lake, fishing, sand toys, football, horse shoes, paddle ball, softball stuff, hacky sacks, basketball, kickball, bubbles and stuff like that. Since this is my idea for camping i'm trying to make it as memorable as possible for us all and that we enjoy ourselves the whole time. We also have a microscope to look at cool things and a telescope for nighttime, bracelet making stuff, coloring books, etc.

    • @SaraWeston
      @SaraWeston  Před 5 lety +1

      I don't bring up many toys, actually. (The only time I really bring up toys is when we have a baby that isn't walking. Then I bring up an extra pack n play to have on the site and I put baby toys in there to occupy the baby while we're trying to get things done around teh site or meals made and the baby can't be held.) We have a very pared down amount of sand toys for the lake (a couple of buckets and shovels and a few innertubes). The kids have their bikes, which they love using. We simply have never had much space in our car to bring much so we haven't and the kids entertain themselves pretty well. I do bring up little bug catcher kits that I typically find at the Dollar Tree during the summer. They like finding bugs and looking at them. I've also had a plastic egg carton that I brought eggs in and then when I didn't need it, my girls used it to fill up with dirt and put more bugs in. The kids go on "adventures" and explore around the campgrounds (nearby to our site and they have their whistles - our kids also know our campgrounds really well since they've gone to them so many times - we have also talked with them extensively about what to do if they are lost or if a stranger comes up to them and they always have a buddy). We play in creeks, go on hikes (around the lake and in other areas in the National Forest), and sometimes our kids get bored. We don't feel like we need to go out of our way to entertain them though, either. My mother-in-law brings up craft supplies and paper plates for the kids to do crafts at their table when they feel like it. The plates are sturdier than paper and they like to glue things they find (twigs, rocks, pine needles, etc.) onto them. (There was a paper plate drawn on in this video as I was showing the campstove area - not sure if you saw that.). This is something her mother-in-law would do for her grandkids so my mother-in-law is carrying on the tradition and my kids love it. We have a bunch of hammock strung up and the kids enjoy laying in those and one of the hammocks is between two closer trees and they are able to use it more like a swing than a hammock and they love that. If you have the room for all those toys/activities, that's great but I might suggest not bringing them all out or telling your kids about all the options and let them just explore in nature and get bored and have to come up with things themselves (this will take pressure off your to entertain them constantly and then you won't have to bring so much the next time ;). But, if you really need the activities for them, you'll have them still. Just a suggestion but do whatever feels best for you and your family. We do also bring up some cards games to play in the tent if it rains (which it has during the day for us in the past and that helps a lot when everyone is crammed inside the tent). Audiobooks would be a great idea too with a bluetooth speaker that you could play for everyone in the tent. When I was a teenager, we would play cards games at night with our friends we were camping with and that's one of my favorite memories of camping. Around the campfire, we tend to tell stories and have everyone contribute to the story by saying one sentence and then going around the cirlce adding to it. Our kids love doing this. We have also brought up riddle cards to try to figure out around the campfire as well. Well, I hope I have you some good suggestions. Let me know if you have any more questions. I hope you have a great trip!

      @@SaraWeston couldn’t help but add my 2 cents - we’ve taken our kids camping since they were babies. It really never crossed my mind to bring toys. Children like new things. They’re in nature and like to use what they find to collect rocks, leaves, sticks or build things with the same rocks, leaves, and sticks. Getting out in nature means using that “nature” in my opinion. We’re going camping Memorial Day weekend and this time it will include my grandchildren. My granddaughter is artistic and might draw something amazing. We won’t even have phone signals, so my pre-teens will have to put the gadgets away and go hiking and swimming and We can’t wait.

We learned not to camp at Gulf Shores, AL in the summer! 🤣 The 5 foot alligator at our campsite was pretty cool, but we had thunderstorms 2 out of 3 nights we stayed, our tents leaked, my husband and 2 sons were stung by jellyfish, my youngest got eaten alive even though we practically drowned him in bug spray, and my van broke down on the way there. Lol! Despite all of that it wasn't too bad, we had a lot of fun/memorable moments too. But, we've decided camping is for cooler months in more mountainous areas, and hotels are for the beach. 🤣🐊

    Hi, I'm also a long time tent camper and I love the ideas. Have you ever been to Calaveras Big Trees State Park?

    • @SaraWeston
      @SaraWeston  Před 4 lety +1

      No, we haven't been there before. I'll have to look it up...I see that it's north of Yosemite. I used to camp at Yosemite every year when I was a kid. We're wanting to take a big trip up to northern California and camp along the way. We'll have to keep this in mind as a possible stop. Is there anything that you particularly enjoy about this spot we should know about?

      @@SaraWeston I love the campground. Its very family friendly. The river is amazing but very swift. There are lots of trails and ranger led activities for the littles. Bathrooms are clean and plentiful. There are bears and snakes however. One of my favorite things about it isn't actually in the park. It's a little lake just outside of the park in the town of White Pines. It's actually called White Pines Lake. Lots of beach, shallow water and picnic tables. Excellent place for the young ones to play in the water. I'm camping in the North Grove loop July 10th through the 18th (quarantine permitting) come say hi.

    We all make decisions about which products to use based on our own circumstances. I don’t mind washing my dishes….but I am only one person camping….not 6! However I rely on my zip lock baggies for food storage.
    I am curious about your set up and rain.? I have a 10 x 10 market tent that I use as my camp kitchen. I usually put up two walls, and in a rain storm, most of my gear stays dry enough.

    I’m curious what you do for lighting during your camping? We use lanterns but I feel like it’s still pretty dark!

    • @SaraWeston
      @SaraWeston  Před 4 lety +1

      We have battery operated lanterns and it is pretty dark. We try to get things cleaned up before dark from dinner and then we typically have a camp fire so that helps some. Propane lanterns are definitely brighter but I like not dealing with those.

      We string white Christians lights around our tent frame, from tent to loop around nearest tree, etc. They give plenty of light without being too bright at night.
      * if you have a screen tent, you can swag the lights from pole to pole around the outside for plenty of light inside.
      * If you go somewhere without electricity, they have solar run white Christmas lights
      AND you can take solar garden lights that stake into the ground (like you get at Lowes) & poke them where your stakes are for your guy lines so no one trips over the ropes after dark or getting up super early to run to the johnny :)

    • @SaraWeston
      @SaraWeston  Před rokem

      I'm just going to copy and paste my response to this question from the other video you left it on as well 😉: We try to get a site at Hume Lake Campground in the teens to the 40s (those are all on the same loop - sorry I can't give you exact numbers for the range but I'm not sure exactly what they are without being up there). At this campground, there are 3-4 main loops and this one is our favorite. Others will camp at Princess Campground and then drive the 15 min to get to the lake - some people prefer this as it's farther away from the Christian Camp and they can be pretty noisy at night and the sound travels well over the lake to the campground. Hope that helps!

    How did that mosquito repellent work out on your trip? Would you recommend it?

    • @SaraWeston
      @SaraWeston  Před 5 lety +1

      You know, I'm not honestly sure. We used it almost every night and sometimes during the morning but I couldn't tell if it really made a difference or not. I don't think I'd buy it again so I probably wouldn't recommend it. It was a neat idea, though :)

    I noticed you don't use an Easy-up or other type of shelter over your table. What do you do when it rains?

    • @SaraWeston
      @SaraWeston  Před 4 lety

      We just kind of make due. It hasn't rained on us too much so that's helped. We just got back from this year's camping trip and we actuality borrowed a friend's easy up (it was already there and they were leaving so we got to keep it while we were there) and I loved having it. Now I want one! It helped so much by providing shade in the middle of the day and kept the table so much cleaner from things falling from the trees. I talk about/show it in a video I filmed while I was up there. 😄

    Darlin, listen, there is much worse things than "wasting" paper. Time is more valuable and you never get it back. So the time it takes to clean dishes for 10 people, you can be spending TIME with those people.

      As the kids have gotten older, I have had them help more. Sometimes it's still easier, in the moment, just doing things yourself versus taking the time to train your kids (especially when you have young ones around). It may seem counterintuitive, but there it is. Now that there older and I have less young ones, I feel like I have the mental/physical capabilities to train more, which I know will help in the long run. And my husband does do a lot to help while we're camping; I just didn't talk about it.
