Curriculum Review: Mr. D Math: Algebra & Geometry (2024)
📚 Curriculum Review of Mr. D Math:
This past 2023-2024 school year, my 8th grader finished Mr. D Math's Algebra Course and the 1st semester of the Geometry Course. I wanted to share with you what we thought about the curriculum in case it might help you in deciding whether or not this would be a good curriculum for your own student.
***One thing I forgot to mention in the video: When I went to purchase the Geometry course, I saw that if you contact them, they will give you $100 off your next course (which was almost a 50% discount for the self-paced course!). I'm not sure if there is a limit on using the code they email you, but it did work for me when purchasing the next course.

Nothrass history is very good about you saying the timeline is different and I didn't realize it, so could you ship me two more? They might waive the shipping fee.
That's great to know. Thanks for the tip! After looking at the timeline book more, I decided we aren't going to use it after all. It's a lot of writing (much more than the last one, in my opinion) and I'm just not sure how much it actually adds to my kids' learning. It's more like just more busy work which I'm not a fan of in general. For them, it's just something for them to get done before they move on to the next thing and they don't sit there reading the surrounding events to see how things fit into the timeline (at least my kids don't - others may - I probably would at my age now but not as a kid). But, again, thanks for the tip. It's good to know that companies will possibly work with you on something like that 😀
My son has Type 1, also. He is 18 now, and I still worry when he leaves the house. It's so hard to walk the line of keeping them healthy without over protecting. Prayers for your peace and her health.
Thank you so much! I definitely think I'll be worrying more when she is leaving the house and when we transition to when she is in charge of her care instead of us. My cousin's daughter is now 17, who also has Type 1, and she is in complete control of her own care and doing well at it. So that's hopeful for me to see that it can be done by someone that age and done well. We're set up to get her first pump in a couple days so we're excited for the possibilites that that will bring for her care as well. We're SO thankful for all the technology that is available to help with care for this. I don't know how parents did it before!
We broke from Adam to Us up into two years and it was very doable! It’s a lot to cover if you do all the additional work and literacy with it. Loved hearing all your choices. I’m a mom of 4. My oldest graduated from public school so I have grades 9, 6, and pre-k left at home. Sounds like we have a lot in common! Glad I found your channel!😊❤
Welcome! We do seem to have a lot in common. That's good to hear that breaking up the book over two years worked well. I still feel good about that decision but we haven't started yet either 😉 I'm not sure how much of the extras we'll do but my hope is that we'll at least get some read alouds in there since we didn't do any last year (well, we did, but they were all fun books and there's nothing wrong with that, imo 😁)
Thank you for the packing lists! I think I've seen this video before and never paid attention to the lists being attached. It's overwhelming to look at but I still have some items prepared in totes from cabining last year.
You are so welcome! I find that focusing on one area of packing at a time can help me to not feel so overwhelmed (like food, clothes, toiletries, camping gear, etc.). Also, after each trip, I make notes on what worked well, what didn't, what we did and didn't use, and if there are any items I need to buy. Then when the next trip rolls around, I look at those notes and it really helps me with getting ready and I don't have to rely on my memory for all those details.
Thank you so much for your video and list
You are so welcome!
Times are so different now. In the 70s, my family with 5 kids, mom, dad and a black lab went camping in a white Chevy station wagon with no rooftop carrier. We were all under 10 years old, but things were quite minimal and we had an old metal cooler and a couple Styrofoam coolers, fishing poles, and a few clothes. Poor man's camping by today's standards, but we always ate good and had fun.
This reminds me of how my in-laws always said they camped in the beginning (but they did stick things on the roof). My family camped more like how I do now, but we had a huge canvas tent with heavy poles that the 6 of us fit into. That was always a task to put up each time! We had a 15 passenger van, took out two rows of seats, and packed the trunk full with our stuff (I think some years we even had things on the roof).
My sons are a bit behind with LOE... My 1st grader will be doing Foundations B, my 2nd grader will be finishing Foundations B and then he'll do C. My 2nd grader has dyslexia and I have 5 kids to bounce between so it's been a slow ride 🥴. I've looked at TGTB, but I watch too many reviews so I'm not sure what to do. They use MWC and 2 of my older kids use MM.
My oldest two girls didn't start their language arts careers with LOE but I still had them start with Book A so they could get all the information. My oldest didn't finish the program until 5th grade but I don't regret her starting later and finishing at an older grade. It's what she needed. That program is a lot of work to do, especially if you are teaching didn't levels to different kids. That's one reason why I combined my oldest two together (to make it easier on me). I feel like TGATB was a good switch for us from the Foundations series (we tried the Essential series afterwards and stopped it halfway through the year - it just wasn't a good fit for us and it was even more time intensive for me - I needed something more hands off and TGATB was just right for us with that). LOE was good for my daughter with dyslexia but what I think really helped her make progress was having a tutor in the Orten Gillingham methos (which LOE is based on). That really helped push her forward more. I'm not sure if that's something that is available to you or not for you 2nd grader. The tutor just kind of fell into our lap so we were very fortunate in that regard and I'm so thankful for it. I haven't heard of MWC but I LOVE MM.
How many problems per day and how many days per week do you do with Math Mammoth?
We do it more by sections and pages. When they're younger, I have them do about 2 pages a day. However, for the Grade 1 book, we challenged two of my younger kids to do more than that if they felt like it, and they did. So I think they were doing more like 8 pages a day. This made them get ahead in their books so they are now both a grade level ahead of their actual grades. They only did that for the very beginning books and then slowed down their pace once things got harder in the books. I think once they start the Grade 3 book is when I have then do a section a day. However, if the section was more than 4 pages, I would allow them to break it up over two days, so they were never doing more than 4 pages a day. By 5th grade, though, for my older kids who weren't a grade ahead like my younger two, I didn't give them that option any more and they needed to finish a whole section each day, regardless of the number of pages. Otherwise, they wouldn't finish the whole book that year. If my kids didn't finish their book in the school year, then they would have to continue into the summer until they did finish it. For my younger two who are ahead, I don't make them keep going through the summer; they just pick up where they left off at the start of the next year (some summers, I would have all my kids do one page of math a day just to keep things fresh but I don't always do that). My oldest finished through their 7th Grade/Pre-Algebra book and is now using Mr. D Math (online) for her high school levels and, after a few kinks in the beginning, that has been a good switch for us. I hope that long answer helps you out! Oh, I should also mention, we only do book learning 4 days a week because my kids do elective classes at a charter school one day a week. So that is one less day every week that they could be doing math to finish their books on time.
I would look at rainbow resource it's free shipping over 50
This was extremely helpful! I've been looking for a video that explains/shows how the worksheets are printed. Are they aware that the worksheet link doesn't contain the updates? I wonder if they are going to update that? We have used BJU Press for math so we are use to a different format as well. This video has me rethinking taking a year long course vs a semester course. I didn't know there were only 2-3 lessons per week. I can see how it would drag on. I signed my son up for the live, Pre-Algebra course. I need to reassess. Anyway, thank you!
I'm glad it was helpful 😀 The person I wrote to about it was aware of it; I'm not sure if that info got passed down the line though. I don't think we've encountered that same issue with the Geometry course yet (she's completed the first semester). I may reach out to them before my next daughter starts Algebra with them to see if the parent link has been updated lately or not. Otherwise, I guess we'll just deal with printing off a few extra pages as we get to them. We're at least aware of the issue now to be on the lookout for it in case something doesn't seem right but it is a bit annoying. The self-paced class was definitely the right choice for my daughter for the pacing (and for being able to increase the speed on the videos). She would not have done well in the live classes, I think. I hope you were able to figure out what would be the right fit for your son.
So after the logic of english you are going into level 2? My daughter is finishing loe and I couldn't decide where to place her. She's going into 3rd grade.
Yes, I did that for my going-to-be 5th grade daughter and it seemed to be a good fit for her. I also debated what level to put her in after LOE because LOE focuses on things that TGATB doesn't as much and vice versa. When I looked at the placement tests for TGATB and looked at the free downloads they had, there was enough that was not taught in LOE that TGATB covered that I felt Level 2 would be a better transition than Level 3. Now, my daughter probably could have handled Level 3 straight away but it would have been more of a struggle and possibly less enjoyable than her completing it this past year. Also, I don't think they had the updated Level 3 out yet when I would have been in the market for it and I'm so glad we were able to do it. We both enjoyed it so much, so I'm glad she didn't miss out on the updated version. My son, who is going into 3rd grade, struggles more with ELA than his older sister, so I definitely feel like Level 2 is the right level for his transition. Switching between curriculums can be so hard to make decisions on. My biggest suggestion is to look at the free downloads they have and actually look at what the year entails and see which level your daughter is ready for - I think looking at the actual curriculum (which they thankfully allow you to do) is better than just doing their placement tests, at least for me. I hope that helps!
Thanks for sharing. Very helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
What is your opinion on TGTB level 4 course book? I've heard the readers aren't great. I just know that the new Level 3 will be a tough act to follow. It was soo good!
I think the course book is good and is a good step up from Level 3 and prepares them for Level 5. However, I agree that the readers aren't great. My girls did not like reading them at all. They don't like required reading, so that's a point against them in the first place, but then, they couldn't connect with the stories or characters in the readers. There was no character growth, and the stories themselves were just boring to my girls. The readers in Level 3 were SO GOOD (the whole course was, really). I wish they would have readers like that for the higher levels.
@SaraWeston thank you for your opinion! I know TGTB stated that they won't be updating level 4 or 5 until later in the future. I think they're focusing on levels 6 and up since they are still one edition behind 4 & 5. Hopefully, they're all similar to level 3!
@rebekahian Oh, I really hope they update them all eventually to be like Level 3. From my quick glance through the updated Level 2, it seems like Level 3 now, so I'm very hopeful for this next year 🤞
@@SaraWeston we really enjoyed the updated level 2!
Topsail island nc is a beautiful beach
Thanks for the rec 🙂
Do you ever go to the beach for vacation
No, we don't "vacation" at the beach since we live close enough that we go for the day or a few hours when we want to.
Looking forward to hearing about your experience with Mr. D math. My daughter is using Math Mammoth 7 next year and I have been wondering where we would go when we are ready for Algebra. Thanks for sharing!
My review of Mr. D Math will come out at the end of this month 🙂
So you started taking the evening primrose orally at 36 weeks ?
It's been almost 4 1/2 years since I did this, so without rewatching the video, I can't be sure. BUT I did find some notes I took about when to take the pills, and this is what I wrote down (but I would absolutely do more research yourself before going ahead with any of this): At 34 weeks, 1 pill every other day At 35 weeks, 1 pill a day At 36 weeks, alternate between 1 and 2 each day At 37 weeks, 2 every day, both orally and vaginally At 38 weeks, 3 every day, both orally and vaginally *Again, I would do more research before starting this regime. Talking to a midwife could also be a great option to get their advice*
@@SaraWeston omg I’m 36 weeks now so I took one yesterday but I felt so nauseous and fatigued a few hours later. I couldn’t sleep. I woke up sick. So just in case I’m waiting until I’m not sick then I will try again bcz i wonder if it was making me nauseous. Also wow thanks for responding I didn’t look to see how long it’s been since you posted
Update I tested positive for Covid ! I’m feeling better still sick but I didn’t get nauseous from the primrose
@breeguh2854 Oh no! I hope you get fully better very soon! Good news about the primrose, though 🙂
I'm hoping to see you do some family camping together. stay safe keep up the good work God bless.
Thank you! I don't have plans yet for a video this year while we're camping. Any suggestions on what you'd like to see?
Does your kids fish why your camping mine love fishing
@donniemabry1470 They do when they get the chance. Their dad or grandpa will take them. I had a bad experience getting a hook stuck in my hand while fishing when I was a kid, so I stear clear off it myself 🫣
My wife make me take off the fish. Lol
Wow! Put a bike alarm on the girls tent. Never can’t be to careful
Awesome information. Do you do primitive? How do you keep food cold? How long do you stay?
No, we don't do primitive camping. I did one as a teenager, and my husband has a couple of times as an adult (once recently with a few of our kids). But we've never done it all together as a family. Maybe when all the kids are a bit older. We keep the food cold in ice chests using a combo of ice blocks and cubed ice and freezing as much of the food ahead of time as possible. I have a video on Camping Food Prep in which I talk/show more about this, if you're interested. We typically stay for 7-9 days. it just depends on our schedule, but the minimum is at least a week if we can.
Wanted to share my experince with a baby who is fed donor milk via supplementer (a bottle with kind of like a straw that goes in their mouth alongside the nipple. So they breastfeed and get extra donor milk at the same time). I actually have this same set up at home too. I bring frozen breastmilk (which doubles as extra ice packs) and In the evening I fill up the amount of bottles that I need during the night and put them in a little cooler bag with ice bricks that I sit next to my head. So when my babies wake up I just grab a bottle and feed them lying down right next to me (we cosleep too). We've never been away for longer than 3 nights though so not sure how to handle the amount of ice bricks you would need for a longer trip. Or if this would be safe in America with potential bears. Thanks for all your tips, I'm already looking forward to our next camping trip with baby number 3 who will be 3 months old then.
Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with bottle/donor feeding while camping! Hopefully, that will help someone else 😁
Thank you for this video! Do you still use/enjoy Math Mammoth? 🙂
You're welcome! Yes, we still use MM for all my kids. My oldest "aged out" of the program last year (she completed the 7th grade book as a Pre-Algebra course) and she was SO well prepared for Algebra this year with a different curriculum (Mr. D Math). I talk about this more in my Year-End Update Video that is up on my channel now, if you're interested. I have zero plans of switching from this curriculum for any of my other kids until they age out as well. If they had High School levels, I would have stuck with them but they don't 😞
Wow, just wow, I’m halfway through your video, and I had to stop to say thanks already! Your summary of math and language arts were excellently shared. I’m learning key aspects of the curriculums, the pros, the cons - not just feelings - but real attributes of the texts. It’s great to hear that other ppl have real life challenges as well, like trips and health issues, too! 💪🏽💪🏽 Now I’m off to listen to the rest. 👏🏽
Thank you so much for the kind words! This was truly one of the best comments/compliments I've received on one of my videos. I'm glad it was helpful. 😁
Thanks for sharing! I am looking forward to seeing what curriculum you will use next year, especially for your upcoming 9th grader.
Me too! I'm a little nervous about the curriculum as I've always picked everything out myself up to this point, but if we want to leave options open for college, we have to go certain routes. I just really hope it's engaging and she learns from it. I will definitely keep you posted once I learn more about it this next year.
@@SaraWeston Yes, I understand. We are in California too, and we plan for our kiddos to go the A-G route, so we will also have to use certain curriculum. It’s nice to see other mamas(even just slightly) ahead of me, and see how they navigate these years.
So, I talked with a mom at our charter school yesterday whose kids used the Acellus Online program for all their school this past year. (Her oldest is going into 9th next year as well). She had great things to say about it. So that was encouraging to hear since that is the program that they use for our high school for A-G courses for independent study. I will still come out with a video once I have experience with it, but I wanted to let you know in case you would like to start researching it on your own.
So much information 😬☺️
I hope it was helpful!
Where did you get the kitchen utensil and plate basket?
I got it from Costco a few years ago.
So good, thank you!
You're very welcome!
Love love love
Thanks!
Just my 2 cents, do NOT listen to the nay sayers, do what works for you and yours. As long as you pack out the trash, who cares ?!! Or tell them to come and do kitchen duty !! 1st time i watched one of your videos. Thx and i will be back for more.😊
Thanks for the encouragement and glad you liked it 😊
Thank you so much for this! Im a mom of a 2, 3 and 5 year old. We are going to camp in our back yard a few times first, then on my moms 10 acres, then a few camp sites BUT, my main goal is to do primative camping away from camp sites. My kids are really loving "the outdoor boys" on youtube and they want to do what his kids do, and im all for it! My youngest is so obsessed eith catching a fish, cooking it on a fire and camping. So we are gonna make it halpen haha
That sounds amazing that your willing to do that with your kids. I like the luxury of campsites (at least with my kids) so you won't find me doing primitive caning any time soon 😉 When I was a teenager, I did do a backpacking trip (no campsites, water, it bathrooms) so I have done it before but it's been over 20 years - maybe someday....I hope you have a great time!
I’m 38 weeks and I’ve been drinking red raspberry leaf and I feel nothing 😫😫 I think he doesn’t want to come out
I know this is a bit late but...I hope everything went well with your birth. Those final weeks can feel like FOREVER when you're pregnant. All of my kids were "late" so I know that feeling all too well.
@@SaraWeston I was late and ended in C-section due to low amniotic fluid and the baby had poop. Those are the dangers of waiting past 40 weeks.
@brendabenitez7359 I'm sure that wasn't the birth experience you were expecting or hoping for. I hope you and baby are doing well now and that you are getting the rest you need to recover from birth and a surgery. That's one thing I regret, not slowing down as much after each birth (which is easier said than done) so I how you are prioritizing you as much as you can during this time. You just went through a lot and now you have a little one to care for on top of that.
@@SaraWeston at all it wasn’t. I listened to my midwife and waited for natural labor to happen. At 41w6d I went to hospital to get induced and I started contractions on my own to only be told my contractions were causing my baby to become stressed and that I needed an emergency C-section. After doing everything right and everything tried to help being labor naturally. I’m still down about it because that was my only chance to have my natural birth and it was taken from me.
@@brendabenitez7359that happened to my aunt too!!! And they don’t know why the contractions were stressing baby out
Smart . Great idea's .
Thanks!
I call it comfort camping. I would much rather have all of what we need to enjoy the time out, than to suffer through barely getting by. I bring home half a tote if snacks, every time. Because, no matter what I put in there, what my son wants changes on a whim so I make sure there's a variety of things for him to pick over. And just so you don't feel bad, my garage looks like a tornado hit it. And when we get back, a 10 x 10 canvas springbar tent will be hanging from the ceiling in there too because if it doesn't fully dry out 👀...I paid way too much for that tent to risk it not drying completely out... Comfort camping, there's survival camping, and that's fine for people who want to see how much they can suffer without suffering but that's not my jam. I like comfort. To me, camping should be a comfortable and refreshing experience. I did my "survival camping" in the military 😅 Edited to add: Have you considered getting a 12v fridge/ freezer/ fridge and freezer combo? Because honey... my nerves couldn't take it and a good quality chest is heavy. I'm widowed and my son is 7. It'll be a while before he's big enough to really help with that.
I like that term, comfort camping 😊 Definitely don't need to suffer if not needed while on a trip/vacation. Those ice chests are very heavy, but that's why I load them up in the car and keep them in the car for the entire trip. They don't do much moving if I can help it 😂
@@SaraWeston It took way longer than it really should have for me to figure out that loading it in the car and leaving it there was smarter than all the things I was trying to do to figure out how to drag it 🤣
Finally I found a video by someone who brings “everything”. We’re a family of 3, and completely fill our Honda Pilot and hitch rack for a camping trip. Or 4 day vacation…
I'm a fairly new camper, just started in fall 2021 and have watched so many of your videos and they have been sooooo helpful (you may recognize my name by now lol!). We just go with our homeschool co-op (hubby isn;t into camping AT ALL but lots of other friends and kids there so it's always a party for my kids! My first ever trip, my youngest of 7 had just turned 1 and was not walking, but could sit up. I bought a baby camping chair with a tray and sat it on the picnic table while we ate (so she was safe) or on the ground with something under her sometimes to avoid her grabbing sticks or whatever and trying to eat them. And i can't say enough about the Ergo, she was on my back most of the trip, even while teaching two kiddos how I ride a bike! But after years of wearing babies, especially my 6th who needed me to wear him basically all day every day for the first year of life, I have chronic shoulder and neck pain w/ migraines :( But if you don't overdo it, YES wear them on your back as much as possible.
I'm so glad you've found so many of my videos helpful - that's why I make them 😊 Good advice on the baby wearing. It definitely puts a strain on your body over time. Also, you're amazing taking 7 kids camping on your own! I broke down when my husband went on an overnight backpacking trip in the middle of our camping trip and I think I only had 4 at the time (they were on the young side, though, so I'll give myself that).
My friend who got me and a bunch of families in our co-op into camping (and organizes our co-op camping trips) recommended this tip for ice. If you have freezer space (and looks like maybe you don’t haha) freeze a bunch of water bottles, old juice containers or whatever with drinkable water. Put those on the bottom, then put in food and freeze most of it like you did. Then use a little loose ice on top and in the empty spaces between the items. The water bottles are like blocks of ice that don’t melt quickly BUT they don’t leak so less water in your cooler! Plus it’s free lol! And when the do melt you have nice cold water to drink. I tend to use a mix of smaller 8oz bottles and large 64oz to make best use of space. This year I think I’ll actually skip the loose ice altogether and purchase the freezer shock long life ice packs that are supposed to be colder than ice and stay frozen for way longer and don’t leave a watery mess. I’ll put those along the edges and maybe a few like a divider in the middle of the cooler and see how it lasts for a 6-7 day trip! There’s a camp store with block and cubes ice so if it doesn’t last I can always buy ice. Thanks for these videos they have very helpful. Lots of tips!
I have frozen water in old containers before but, for me, it never seemed to keep everything as cold as ice does so, besides not having the freezer space, that's why I don't do that. Freezing as much food/drinks ahead of time definitely helps a ton, though. Sounds like you have a good plan in place for your ice chests too.
Oh wow that's wild that they cancelled on you! I don't know what I would do if that happened to me, we would be DEVASTATED lol! But that's awesome that you had such a great back-up plan and can still have an amazing time.
Yes, it was crazy! But the crazier part was, once we got up there, there is a Christian Camp on one side of the lake and while in "town," I overheard some people talking about how they just got kicked out of their campsites by rangers because they were closing the loop for a few days of repairs. They then cancelled those people's reservations on them which opened up their reservations for other people to book (there is no internet access up their so they couldn't re-reserve their campsites for when they reopened in a few days) so they got cancelled completely but after they had already arrived and set everything up. That would have made me even more upset than what happened to us. I couldn't believe the story when I heard it.
I was rewatching your old video (yes for the 3rd time!) when I realized you have a new one! I’m already thinking about my trip in June even though I can’t even book my site until next month 😂 This year I think I’ll buy those cooler shock extra long life ice packs to avoid the watery mess of loose ice in the cooler. And I think we’ll get a canopy this year as well. Last trip a friend of mine borrowed one for the first time for her site next to ours and we realized how great it is and compact! So yea, I think I’ll upgrade my site this time around 😊. Appreciate your videos, they are super helpful!
I love our canopy! It's so nice in the heat of the day, for keeping debris off the table more, and for protection if it starts to rain. I'm so thankful we have one now. Glad you've enjoyed so many of the videos 😊
Great video! Thank you for taking your time!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I am looking for Crunchy Onion & Chicken Noodle Casserole. A Aunt Bees recipe if you can help Thank you.
Sorry, I got this recipe from someone else and I'm not familiar with any other Aunt Bee's recipes.
I love the ideas and love watching your camping videos.
Thanks!
Im playing the game all day
I like to Watch how you enjoy wrapping. And you dont waste paper! Good job!! Greetings from Ecuador 🇪🇨😃
Hello! I'm not sure how much I actually enjoy the process, but I do love it when's it's done, and it does go by quicker if I have some good music playing. 😁
can you use a regular printer?
If you use photo paper with it, I think it would turn out well. But I've never tried, so I'm not positive. I don't have a color printer, so I have to get mine printed elsewhere.
*promosm* ☀️
this is my first time seeing your vids but you making gift bags out of wrapping paper is genius!
I wish I could take credit for coming up with that idea, but I saw it somewhere else - it is a great idea!
I understand a budget and doing half an expensive gift for birthday and Christmas. I don’t understand the thought process behind wrapping an empty box. Why not just remind her before Christmas she’ll be getting less, rather than giving her the hope and then the disappointment when she understands she’s unwrapped an empty box
Totally agree! It’s horrible to wrap an empty box
I'm impressed you got your Christmas shopping done and I haven't even started.lol
I've pushed myself the last few years to get it done early and I'm also so thankful that I do that when December rolls around.
These gift videos are also helpful to us Grandparents! Thank you.
Wonderful!
I always like seeing non electronic gift ideas for tweens/teens. I feel like we’ve gotten into a trap of always getting a new electronic item and it takes up so much of our budget and is so boring to buy 😆
