Melbourne: Australia's Greatest Cycling City

  • At first glance, Melbourne’s just a big city, arcing around a bay in the south-east of Australia. It is those things, but riders see places differently. They see things like this: to the south - roads tracing the coastline, dotted with thousands of cyclists. To the east - a range of low mountains covered with temperate rainforest and ferns, overlaid with a web of gravel and tarmac. To the north - endless rolling hills and quiet country roads. And in the inner suburbs, a bike culture that’s the envy of every other state capital.
    With all this and more going for it, little wonder that Melbourne is considered Australia’s greatest cycling city.

    One from thee past: in 1971, I rode up to Sassafras, had a cuppa with a survivor from the Bridge on the River Kwai, and rode down the 1in20 - well before it had its name. What made it interesting was that my brakes failed quite quickly aqd I rode down the rest of the way, using my mate as a brake.A memorable ride. Lovely video

  • @Superimposing
    @Superimposing Před 5 lety +4

    Melbourne may have a great bike culture but it's laughable to think that it has the best cycling in Aus. Come to Canberra. Excellent, well established urban paths and bike lanes. World class single track all over the city, some of the best at Bruce Ridge less than 2km from the CBD. Solid urban road climbs from easy (Mt Stromlo) to challenging (Black Mtn, Mt Ainslie). In Canberra you are never more than about 5km from the urban fringe. Quiet country roads both tar and gravel surround the city supplying amazing riding from your front door. The hills of Namadgi and The Brindabella Range give ample opportunities to climb proper hills. I could wax lyrical all day.

    • @XX-is7ps
      @XX-is7ps Před 3 lety +3

      It’s a very different kind of cycling I think. Melbourne looks to be “enthusiast” cycling. In Amsterdam (Netherlands as a whole) bicycling is more commonly just about utility/primary mode of transport for everyone from kids to grandmas 👍

    It seems that the criteria for the best cycling city is made up of pretentious factors e.g. cycling culture, bike shops, coffee, whether people shave their legs and wear $500 colourful kits, street art to photo your bike..
    if you’re after the best and varied terrain and views, it’s definitely not Melbourne

    • @Oakpathetics

      @@ashleymalamute depends what you want in your rides.. the Netherlands is flat as a pancake. Ben Cureton no issues with that is there? Adelaide’s got coffee as good as anywhere in Melbourne. Yes Melbourne probably has a nicer Crit seen, and also it’s cool riding around the city, but how do you guys find the tram tracks? Pretty nasty if you get your wheel stuck in one. That’s never really been an issue in Adelaide, also where are the climbs in melbourne? I’m not talking about out of melboune, I’m talking “in” Melbourne. Adelaide’s got plenty. Whatever you want, all 5k away from the centre of the city. Want to do a flat 100k loop along the bay like you can in Melbourne? No problem. Head out along to port Adelaide and outer harbour.
      There’s a reason why mike Turter hosts the tour down under over here. Also who’s the world time trial champ at the moment? Pretty sure he’s from Adelaide.
