What is your favorite stain?
Maxum solid deck stain is also a good stain. Comparable to arbor coat at a more affordable price and also sold by Ben moore! Problem is I think they are discontinuing it 😢
I used sherwin Williams woodscape on my fence and Cabot timber oil on my deck,I’ve had them both on for one year and they are both holding up well.
Benjamin Moore Arborcoat by far the best....(but I must say I am a Benjamin Moore fan in all products if truth be told). Ha ha
Sikkens Cetol
Armstrong-Clark!
Southern BC Canada here, we only use waterborne arborcoat on exteriors that are protected from the elements, soffits, covered decks etc. It's been difficult to source solid oil arborcoat, but the semi solids and semi transparents are fairly accessible. We have 4 seasons here: flood, fire, bear and winter.
They don’t make a solid oil
I had an older deck and scraped as much as I could and sanded with 2 grits so i had a mixture of the adhere'd old stain and bare wood but no loose paint. I used the Arborcoat solid deck stain. It went on beautifully but in less than one season a fair bit of the paint has peeled off. Yes, the deck gets wet (live in northeast) and it does seem like it doesn't hold up. I went back to the the paint store said to stain with an oil based primer tinted to the same color and then top coat with the regular water based product. We'll see how it holds up next year.
I have the same situation and I am curious how yours is holding up?
Bottom line is any deck that stays damp from either being too close to the ground with no airflow to dry out or wood not being dry enough prior to staining with solid stains will not hold up. Been pro painter and doing most of the trades for 45 year prior to retiring. I've tried everything on a one of my decks (have 2) where the wood just doesn't seem to dry out unless we get a drought for weeks due to only 10" clearance underneath to ground which in a U shape area of house surrounding the one deck. The other deck is same height but is only attached to one side of house so it does get more air to dryout. It still peels but not as bad.
I just finished grinding/sanding layers of deck stains and even oil base primers underneath down to bare wood. Will try Rustoleum Rock Solid Deck start. Supposed to be better as a primer for damp deck boards. We'll see. Arbor coat is one of the better stains I've used though, but not much will help damp wood from keeping from blistering and peeling in the hot sun 90 degrees and up.
Greetings from Meridian. Both my dad and I worked for Benjamin Moore paints. My dad retired from there for 30 plus with 10 of years as the plant Director. Since the Moore family sold out to Berkshire Hathaway the quality of the paints, especially the fence / deck stain have gone downhill. Even the paint doesn't cover that well anymore. Being true Benjamin Moore followers and being former employees we receive an allotment of paint at no cost every year so we picked 15 gallons.. The results looked great at first, but after a year in Idaho weather the stain was pealing off. And yes, we did prep everything.
Interesting
Oil Oil Oil ! Getting impossible to buy.
Was expecting to see some actual video of results from a job.
Hi, my name is Dave from Sun Valley Idaho & We use a lot of the Arbor coat water base and oil base. If the weather is Hot, I don't recommend using water base Semi Trans on siding or Decks . When it's warm out, you definitely have to move fast. Go from one end to the other and do not stop . I usually do Brush or backroll between 2 and 4 boards at a time.
ArborCoat is going to be discontinued
The Sherwin Williams superdeck stain is really good,I will have to try the aborcoat.Benjamin Moore colors for me are very elegant and sophisticated, but lack the warmth and vibrancy of Sherwin Williams paint from my experience. Here in Chicago it’s easy to get any of these paints their is a paint store almost on every block. Thanks for the videos.
I love Flood stains - PPG purchased Flood but so far the product seems to be the same - they seem to work very well in Atlantic Canada along the coast.
Good evening Chris! Cool video! Don here from Ottawa Canada. I have used many stain products over the years. My favourite is CABOT Stains. Give it a try you will not be disappointed. Coverage is unbelievable. One coat. For best results apply by brush. The gooseneck guy! Cheers!
Couldn't have said it any better, I've used anything from twp to Thompson's, Cabot's is by far the best
I had Cabot and it failed in 4 months. I used on red mahogany and it failed bad. I called Cabot and their customer service was terrible. I'll never ever use Cabot or recommend it ever again.
Thank you for doing this video, it was extremely helpful. I appreciate your thorough detail.
Glad to help
Well, using the Mi T-M pressure washer you recommended and this will be on a deck yellow tip. Now I am trusting you so I am going with the Benjamin Moore Solid Color Stain. Hopefully , my local dealer will have prices like yours.
Ours peeled after 1 winter in Canada… very disappointed in this stain. Just a hard rainfall peels this stuff off, couldn’t believe it. Yes we prepped our deck properly..
Prep
@@Idahopainter Just said that I did it properly…
@@90sDude I think his point was that it’s not the product 9/10 times. I see deck stains failing consistently from user error.
How exactly did you prep your deck? And what time of the year did you stain it?
Can you use the stain on inside wood surfaces?
Be careful when using the solid oil stain on house exteriors. Do not apply directly over milled wood or it won't stick. Rough up the surface with sandpaper first. Apply as per the directions on the can. Apply second coat 10 or so minutes from the first. Looks great and and lasts for years. Unfortunately additional coats of the oil take on a glossy finish so be prepared as gloss is not very attractive on a house.
Very good review ! I was thinking of using AborCoat solid stain on OSB for the walls and ceiling of my workshop, thinking it would stand up better with temperature/ humidity changes. Your thoughts? Thank you, Jake
Looks beautiful but one year of a lot of rain here in Northern California - peeled off. We sanded and did all proper prep. Do not recommend for rainy areas in my experience
I am so confused because if you do a google search the raying of arborcoat is quite bad. I am trying to devide which to do , stain or paint my house, and I will only use Benjamin Moore. However, I am worried about this stain product. Thoughts???
Hey new Grampa !!! Congrats!!
Question does the Arborcoat water based need sanded after the first coat?
We have half log siding which requires resurfacing. A contractor is coming to grind the clear stain off to prep the wood. Would Arborcoat be a good choice for solid white?
I love using this product ✨
Stained an outdoor door with this and it’s peeling when the door shuts. I used the spring tools to pop the door off so the door is leveled as before.. really disappointed. The Sherwin Williams woodscapes holds up better!
Great work. Great detail. Are you affiliated with Benjamin Moore?
Do you recommend the semi-transparent version as well?
can arborcoat be used on old pavers (20 YEARS ) and in good condition but faded
Benny Moore is in the top 3 paint products. But so dang expensive, most costumers buy the cheap shit. And wonder why the paint job only lasts 2 years.
Will semi solid cover lap mark's from pressure washers
Love Woodscapes from Sherwin
Thanks!
Can I stain mahogany front door with this product
Love your videos I was wondering if you think I could use arbor code on brick and mortar. This is for my own house I would like to tuckpoint it and also fix all the crack bricks. But then I don't want to point it if I don't have to. Just wondering if it's properly prepped could I use arbor code or what other product would you recommend
The TDS will tell you
@Idahopainter hey Chris what durable transparent stain will you recommend?
In Canada with the snow and ice i doudt the this product hold the stance
What's a good paint for a mortar shower floor?
You talked about the Benjamin Moore waterborne solid and semi solid stains for decks, not the semi transparent - is that because you do not recommend?
No I do recommend it, but it depends on the look you are going for, the condition of the deck, and the customers budget.👍
The best stain you can buy
Could I use Arborcoat solid stain on a log cabin? If so how long will it last?
Depends on many factors
Arborcoat very easy to work with dose not cause checking.
I've heard this product does not hold up has a tendency to peel has a poor rating and has a unnatural look with the solid color
Would it work on cedar wood
Hey bud what would you recommend for a mahogany deck in New Jersey?
Penofin
Would you ever use this on pine interior stair treads?
No
How does solid stain compare to exterior paint?
Two completely different products
@@Idahopainter Can I not use exterior siding paint to paint my wooden deck railings?
what is a good oil solid stain?
Dang, I hate oil Ralph but if I had to I would use Cabot's
Water based guys means easy for me to hell with customer never use anything but oil based on wood siding.
I used the water based arbor coat on a pergola, off white color, a year later it had black mildew all over and looked terrible.
Spray a diluted bleach and laundry detergent on it and rinse it off. Wet it all down first though
✌🏽
anyone else notice the proverbs 15.1?
Yes, and it contains some good advice, especially for me when my sweetie isn't so sweet, and I respond accordingly. 48 years together and still learning.:)
Cabot all day long
*I thought John Cena switched career and became a painter.*
if you stopped all the blah blah, you could condense this to 2 minutes
why is this 30min? lol
ok
Terrible results with Arbor Coat, poor service life even when following instructions 100%.
on what surface?
@@mrspunk61 on new cedar decking
@@al7385 Benjamin Moore should have a big label on their can, this product is not good for decking, I’m talking about their solid decking product. Especially new cedar because there’s no way it’s penetrating that. Maybe if it was older cedar and there was nothing ever on it and it was very porous and you put one coat on it you might have a shot for some time anyway. What it should say on the can is use this product if your deck is worst case scenario. Then your deck will look good for a year maybe two. It obviously gets wet all the time and then the sun will force that moisture out and the stain along with it. Less is more with decking, the thinner the better if it’s a water based product. Oil will penetrate but generally only looks good for 2 seasons and then has to be recoated to look good . I think pressure treated wood is the way to go and just clean it every year or plastic type decking
@markfialkowski4388
My Benjamin Moore recommended this for brick. They said brick isn’t listed on the label or TDS so that they can keep it advertised as VOC free. Apparently there’s some kind of VOC reaction when using it on brick and that’s the only reason it’s marketed for wood.
It is being discontinued
