Barney completing the marathon actually makes sense. He is known to work out to keep his attractive physique and he does have a lot of energy, but the fact that his body gives out at the Subway makes just as much sense. He clearly over exerted himself because most of his stamina is short range, bar hopping for Barney generally means he’s taking cabs to different bars and using that energy in bars to pick up women then sleep with them. That’s an effort that’s not hours long unless it involves sex but that’s mostly in an 8ft radius. Barney ran/jogged the New York City marathon for hours, constantly. That more effort than he’s used to so the fall out was quite realistic.
The total muscle failure he had short after this scene is a real thing. People with high pain tolerances sometimes don't realize they screwed themselves by pushing too far until its waaaaay too late. I got a high tolerance from my father but...thankfully not as high as his. That man broke a toe and *didn't notice* for 3 days. Funny thing is he says it started hurting after he realized it was broken. Says it didn't hurt at all until he did though.
Funny how Lily, who left Ted stranded in the middle of nowhere to go pursue an Art scholarship, abandoned Marshall to go to San Francisco, attempted to have a same day wedding in Atlantic City (to avoid facing Marshall's family after breaking his heart), went all the way to the airport to escape Marshall the second he was doing something he wanted to do (this being the same season where just episodes earlier she had observed that 'corporate Marshall isn't the man I fell in love with'), is now joking that he'll be getting a tracker when they get married. Lily is forever the reacher.
I'm curious as to your overall physical health before you did that. I have had zero practice, and am doing the la marathon this Sunday 😅 literally because of this episode.
Well... that’s the thing. I ran track in college at a military school, I then worked as a mountaineer in Alaska. During the season I weighed 148, off season 165. Later I joined the military and did some silly stuff where I currently live (Coronado, CA). So... maybe I’m not the best worst example? Im 42 now and suspect I could complete it but I don’t know if could get a sub 4:30. My fastest time was 3:08, slowest 4:22, that was four years ago. 3:08, I didn’t train for a marathon but was in strict conditioning.

Whenever I think something makes no sense in himym I just remind myself that it's mid aged father telling a story to orphaned kids so they could go to sleep.
So I just ran a marathon today with not that much training. 8km was my longest run prior. As far as the run goes barney kinda right lmao but fuxk does it shock the system afterwards, legs barely work and i been heaving. Train for your marathons people.
@@aimans2312, after the Athenian army defeated the Persians at the battle of marathon in 490bc, the Persian forces retreated back to their ships to sail around the coast directly to Athens. The Athenian army then began marching back to Athens from marathon, but fearing the Persians would get there first, they sent a runner back to Athens to inform the Athenian council of their victory. The runner ran the entire distance from marathon to Athens (which was approximately 26 miles), & after delivering his message, he collapsed and died of exhaustion.
He's generally fit and he keeps himself in shape. It's a ridiculous distance but not impossible for a fit person, if you keep a steady pace. But being fit doesn't mean you can run that distance with no consequences. Running that distance is tiring for anyone, much less a person who doesn't have experience with running/jogging long distances.
