      To be fair the $600 thing isn't a bad idea in terms of the tech and monopoly scheme that they brewed up.

    I bought a Dreamcast back in the day, and I love it, but Sega made a huge mistake with its specs. PS2 destroyed the DC because it could also play DVD movies. That, combined with backwards compatibility for PS1 games, made the PS2 a huge value proposition

    • @sswpp8908
      @sswpp8908 Před 5 lety +6

      Not so much a mistake on Sega's part; they simply could not compete. Even if Sega had foreknowledge of the PS2 playing DVD's, what could Sega have done? The DVD standard is proprietary so they would have had to license the technology to play DVD's from another company, driving up the cost.

    • @threej4pope
      @threej4pope Před 5 lety +1

      the PS2 could play DVDs and PS1 games, but the Dreamcast could play NES, SNES, and Genesis games. Amazing system capabilities if you looked past official titles. I get that doesn't help in official marketing, and wasn't enough to prop up sega in the console war, but it is another data point of how Sega was actually the superior system.

    It was more than one decision that ruined Sega. Kalinske didn't like the Saturn from the beginning and wanted to partner with Silicon Graphics and use their chipset. Sega Japan rejected the idea and Silicon Graphics partnered with Nintendo instead and used that chipset in the N64. Then Kalinske then wanted to work with Sony on a joint console, but an agreement couldn't be made since Sega Japan insisted that the console be able to do both 2D and 3D, while Sony wanted 3D only. Sony then Developed the Playstation on their own.

    The Saturn was also a nighmare to develop for, poor dev kits and odd hardware made for fewer games and longer dev time. The Dreamcast also lost out to the PS2 because the PS2 used dvds rather than dreamcast proprietary gd-roms. Making for easier manufacturing and programming the gd-roms also had no copy protection at all PS2 was also backwards compatible.

      Dueling Fatties Many developers said that the Saturn was very difficult to develop for with its two different processors. Most developers only used one of the graphics processors which is why 3D graphics usually didn’t look as good on the Saturn compared to the PlayStation.
      PlayStation 2 development was difficult at first, but it got easier over time. The PlayStation 3 supposedly was a nightmare from beginning to end. Supposedly Sony wanted to make it extra hard to program for so there would be more PlayStation 3 exclusive titles. That wasn’t possible because of high costs for game development and Sony just ended up frustrating a lot of game developers instead who had to learn a difficult development kit and also develop for Xbox 360 at the same time. Apparently all was forgiven with the easier x86 architecture of the PlayStation 4.

    Just two small tidbits:
    Sony originally approached Sega to work with a game console, after Sega and others (Nintendo I believe was another) turned down their offer. In response Sony decided to make their own console. Tom also agreed to run Sega of America with the condition/offer ( I can’t remember) that he could do whatever he wanted. Sega of Japan was outraged when he made the decision to lower the Genesis’s price (amongst other things) not realizing it was what would save their console.

  • @Ecotic
    @Ecotic Před 6 lety +46

    This is pretty simplistic and misses a lot. Being $100 more expensive didn't kill the Saturn necessarily, it was having no graphical advantage despite being more expensive. If the Saturn had substantially better graphical performance than the PlayStation due to it being more expensive, then that generation may have turned out better for Sega. And then of course there's the complex architecture, and how Sega was still making arcade ports when people wanted lengthy home console experiences. People wanted to collect 120 stars over a month like in Mario 64, rather than spend $60 to race on three tracks for 30 minutes.

    Honestly, even had the Saturn sold well, even had Sega waited for its original release date, I doubt it would have helped them. Both Sega and Nintendo were doomed from the start. Sega went into the 32bit generation with the mindset that the future was going to be more 2D games and only threw in a secondary 3D graphics processor at the last minute when it became clear that more 3D heavy games were the way of the future. Most developers found it difficult to program games for. Likewise, Nintendo stuck with cartridges that could only hold a maximum of 32MB, considering that the PC Engine CD-ROM and Sega CD, not to mention the 3DO, CDi, Atari Jaguar CD and various other CD-based consoles and add-ons were already out, this was by all definitions a downgrade no matter what graphical capabilities they possessed. Developers were pissed that Nintendo had stuck with obsolete mediums to store the games, as it greatly limited the game size. Sony on the other hand had a device that was capable of 3D graphics, was easy to program for, and used CDs.
    So it was a no brainer that all developers jumped ship over to PlayStation. Sega and Nintendo also didn't do much to help themselves in next generation. Sony's main selling point was that the PS2 was fully backwards compatible with PS1 games and accessories, and had the added bonus of being a DVD player. The Dreamcast could only playback CDs and had no backwards compatibility with Saturn. Likewise GameCube had no backwards compatibility and couldn't even play CDs because it used an inferior mini-DVD variant to store games. There was no contest, PlayStation was destined to dominate right from the word go.

    Sega was already losing $100 at the $399 price point. The biggest problem that plagued the Saturn from the very start was the fact that Sega had to buy everything to produce said CD product. PlayStation was a product made in house; which in turn was gimmick Sony was able to get away with to sell PlayStation at a $299 price point and yet still be profitable because it was made in house and not out-sourced like the Saturn and other CD based systems before Saturn; which in turn is what caused the price of the product to be so high.
    Speaking of outsourcing, this is the main reason why I go from chuckling to laughing at people who claim Nintendo made "a big mistake" sticking with cartridges and not CD technology. Nintendo was in fact well aware of CD media and how beneficial it would've been. The fatal flaw in Nintendo's case was that they knew in order to acquire such tech, they would need to outsource from other companies to get such tech to be possible. Nintendo didn't have factories at that time capable of producing CD based tech like Sony did; and they knew going that route like Sega and others before them did would've resulted in a very expensive system. There's a reason the 3DO, CDI, Apple-Bandai Pippon, Sega CD, Turbo Grafix CD, Neo Geo CD, Amiga CD32, Atari Jaguar CD, and Sega Saturn were so expensive at their launches. Those who outsourced had to pay royalty fees for each unit sold and each CD unit sold too because they were distribute by an outside source and not in house. Sony was capable of making everything themselves; including custom parts. It is what allowed Sony to get away with sell PlayStation at a cheap price and yet, still be profitable in the long term. So no, it nothing to do with "Nintendo being "cheap"", nothing to do with "cartridges having faster loading times(eventhough that's true in many aspects, but that's beside the point)", or Nintendo being "blind to the change of the times" either. All that was just an illusion used to start fanboy flame-wars and useless arguments from both old and new gamers alike. I promise you all that If Nintendo had their own factories capable of producing CD tech, they would've without a doubt gone with CD's because it would've been made in house and would've allowed them to sell said CD product at a cheap price and still be profitable. But the reality was was that Nintendo knew that going such a route at that time would've come with BIG repercussions to their brand in the long run. So in Nintendo's case it was like this, which "poison" is least likely to affect Nintendo's brand in the long run? Cartridges or outsourced expensive CD tech?

I was excited by the Sega CD, but was amazed when the 32X came out WAY too soon after. When the Saturn came out so soon after that, my head was spinning. I knew someone who told me of working at Toys R Us as a 17 year old in 1995, when the Regional Director called his boss like a day in advanced that a Sega rep was coming by the store, and then the rep came by sometime in the first week of May "We have the Saturn ready and we want this store to be one of the first stores to sell it". The manager was dumbfounded, they already knew about the Saturn and they were expecting an August to October release date window, they didn't have shelving for it, no promotional material (that stuff had to be made and ordered like a week sometimes two weeks in advance usually), and his boss quickly got back with the RD saying essentially "this won't work". They never sold the Saturn there as long as he worked there, or at any Toy's R Us from what he knew of, and it was probably due to that local store manager he was working at ranting to the Regional Director that selling it "now" is a terrible idea; probably along with a ton of other store managers that basically said the same thing to their regional directors.

    • @VOAN
      @VOAN Před 6 lety +2

      Just like Atari and Microsoft, so far they all had been known as major console manufacturers but they only had one successful run with one platform at one time. Sega got the Genesis beating the SNES during its launch period but that's because all the major SNES titles were still in development and also the early head start of the Genesis, Atari only had the Atari 2600 and that is because they hardly had any competitions at that time until the bad games hit the scene, and Microsoft only had the Xbox 360 which only see success in the first year, they started falling in sale once the Wii hit the scene. Dreamcast may be counted as a kind of second success for Sega in that short 1999 run since it did manage to make some kind of sales and had a fantastic launch but everything from 2000 onward was dry like dust for Sega cause attention was turn to the PlayStation 2.
      Fortunately on some part of the world though some of them did see success, the Sega Saturn was very popular in Japan just as much as the PS Vita was, the Sega Master System is a craze in Brazil and is still selling even today, all of Sega's systems were beating Nintendo's systems in Europe throughout, and Microsoft at least found success with the Xbox 360 again in NA later on when people got tired of the Wii and were angry at the Wii U. Atari on the other hand doesn't seem like they will see success anytime soon that is unless the Atari VCS (formerly the Atari Box) is their trump card.

    The early Sega Saturn release was a major moment that resulted in Sega's end as a hardware developer. But there were other issues that compounded Sega during the mid-90s which led to their fall...
    -The American and Japanese offices of Sega started having a falling out with one another by the mid-90s as the Japanese branch wanted to assert more control over company operations in America. For example, Sega of America was not kept in the loop about Sega of Japan making the Saturn until its Japanese release in late-1994. This was around the time Sega of America was working on developing the 32X add-on for the Genesis to expand its lifespan. When news of the Saturn's development became public, the 32X was dead on arrival to market. Hayao Nakayama was also warned by Sega of America that launching the Saturn early in America would fumble its market dominance, but Nakayama was insistent on this happening. This was one of the major reasons Tom Kalinske resigned from Sega the following year.
    -Sega overextending its hand with various game consoles and add-ons released to market. By 1995, Sega had the Genesis, Saturn, 32X, Pico, Sega CD, Game Gear, and Nomad available to sell. This made consumers unsure where Sega's priorities were at for selling game systems and the assumption that they were getting greedy.
    -This one is not as well known to many. Following Sony's failed relationship with Nintendo to create a CD add-on for the Super NES, Sony attempted to form a partnership with Sega to create their own CD-based system since they were inexperienced with developing video games at the time. Sega of America was interested in the possibility and worked with Sony to develop their own video game studio and develop specifications for the console. When Tom Kalinski attempted to try furthering the partnership by talking with Sega of Japan, the company nixed the idea. As history showed, this would come back to bite Sega in the ass later on when Sony used what they learned from their failed partnerships with Sega and Nintendo to develop the Playstation.

But moving on, i agree completly, and if sega of japan didnt refuse the processor that went into the N64 then the playstation woulnd have even gotten off the ground, sega would have had a VERY powerful, easy to program console that used compact discs, AKA easily the best of the generation.

    One thing i love about Sega is that they always doubled the amount of graphics that the best console in the market had. NES was 8, genesis was 16, N64 was 64, dreamcsst was well over 128. So if Sega was to make a system in 2019 I'm positive sony and Microsoft would have to go back to the drawing board.

      The Sega Dreamcast games were a lot of fun, the console did lacked a little when comparing specs, but what it didn't had in specs it makes up in efficiency; contrary to the heavy prerendered crap with lame textures on the PS2. The Dreamcast had a modem preinstalled, so you could play online games since launch. Also it had 4 controllers for great game sessions with friends and neighbors. Compare the graphics of Shenmue with anything launched on the PS2, nothing comes close. Compare the fun of crazy taxi or the thrill of house of the dead 2 with any PS2 original...

    the best thing about the Sega Dreamcast was the controllers
    Playstation had Memory Cards but only Sega had VMU and Rumble Pack
    VMU had its own screen so players can FINALLY pick thier John Madden plays from the VMUs screen instead of worrying your friend might peek at the tv screen as you each chose your plays. you could also carry the VMU in your pocket and play mini games
    Rumble Pack just shook

    • @rars0n
      @rars0n Před 5 lety +1

      I have a love-hate relationship with Dreamcast controllers.
      Let's get the obvious out of the way: the cord comes out of the bottom. I hate that. Problem number 2 is the giant ridges that run along the sides of the controllers. These, combined with the angles that your fingers have to use in order to hold the triggers create one of the most uncomfortable controllers to hold for long periods of time, especially if you're playing racing games. Third obvious complaint is that there's only 6 buttons on it when the previous console had 8. Really dumb idea.
      However, I do love some of the innovations it brought, like the VMU and the ability to plug two different things into the controller. I also really like how the thumb stick feels on it, too bad that there's not a second one.
      Honestly, I own a Saturn 3D controller and in some ways I like that one even better. It obviously doesn't have the VMU ports or rumble, but it's a more comfortable controller with more buttons. So it's kinda a toss-up.

    This video is just plain America-centric to a fault. Sega did just fine before the Mega Drive (renamed Genesis in the U.S because of a trademark issue) and actually outsold the NES in Europe and South America while the Saturn was genuinely successful in Japan.

    • @dennj
      @dennj Před 6 lety +1

      Agreed I thought the same thing, from what I recall the Saturn was hit everywhere else but America because marketing wise it was done poorly, they couldn't convince the America market with no games worth getting, similar issue to the dreamcast though it was DVD being the new way to watch movies, and ps2 can play games it just seem like a two for one deal, something in America jist seem a better choice. Also I don't agree with the video saying the Genesis was made more towards kids and teens, it was made to be an edgier console as it was Nintendo that people considered childish at the time

      @referral madness The thing about releasing new consoles is that manufacturers only continue the development of titles for their old consoles if they're *very* close to completion or if there's still a very big market for them. Also not sure how you got it into your head that I said the Mega Drive outsold the NES in Europe when I was specifically talking about the time before the Mega Drive (dyslexia?).

    • @LAG09
      @LAG09 Před 6 lety

      @referral madness Contrary to popular belief, Sega did just fine before the Mega Drive even in Japan and was decently successful in the U.S as well. Also contrary to what you may believe, you didn't need to actually beat the NES to make money and thus be successful. The NES is not the yardstick for success, it's just a wildly successful console of it's era. Not only that, Sega was able to share a lot of expertise, tech and IP between consoles and the arcade so they didn't even need to sell as many consoles as a pure console maker to make a profit.

There was a cardboard box dropped onto the freeway and she swerved to avoid it and unlike modern freeways there was no guard rails and lots of trees instead. Her car was split in half and she was killed instantly. That cardboard box happened to be empty but even if it had a dishwasher inside of it she would have most likely survived had she just hit it straight on

    It's too bad Microsoft did not learn from Sega's mistakes. At the time the handling of used games was a hot topic issue when the current crop of consoles were getting unveiled. Sony had actually patented a method of forbidding used games from working on PS4. But they let Microsoft go first and test the waters for them with the Xbox 1. Following the eviscerating backlash, Sony opted to never put their patent into practice, but it still didn't stop them from white knighting themselves. "Use of used games? Of course! It was the plan all along! *cough*".

    Sega’s problem was the disconnect between Sega of Japan and Sega of America. It was very much a “left hand doesn’t know what the eight is doing”.
    The whole mess that was the 32X, just as an example.
    Not only was it released the same day as the Saturn’s Japanese launch, there were plans to make a stand alone console, code named Neptune.
    Sega threw all this extra time and money on the 32X. Time and money that could have gone to making the Saturn a better system and possibly worth it’s price tag...
