RIP Dreamcast. Shenmue, Jet Grind Radio, Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi, House of the Dead, Power Stone, Soul Caliber, Virtua Tennis, Virtua Fighter, Skies of Arcadia, Toy Commander… good amount of quality games I would play constantly.
Dreamcast is my favourite console of all time.

The Sega Master System was the most popular 8-bit console in Europe, Australia, and Brazil, and is still manufactured and sold in Brazil to this day (nearly 40 years later). In fact, it’s the longest continually produced console in gaming history.
That's really cool! I had a Sega master system II, well my mum did, this was in the later 90's in Australia.
I'm a Brazilian and I can attest to that. We love the SEGA Master System and the MegaDrive. Sega rules!!!
@@metodoinstinto I wanted a Sega Master System, but my parents got an NES instead... so I mostly played on my Commodore 64 (which I liked a lot better than the NES).
I loved the SMS. Yet it's relative success (compared to other consoles) was due to the fact that it was the first affordable console with 64 colors, a powerful 8-bit CPU, and enough bandwidth and ROM to play remakes of then current arcade games.

I agree. Was this the first time we saw x - platform gaming? Also, it wasn't a complete failure, at least not for the small inde company that was supplying the OS. The DC gave birth to the XBOX... albeit a surrogate birth.

The biggest recent Sega news is that citing major losses from the lockdown, Sega Sammy sold off their legendary arcade locations to a holding company called GENDA, renaming all former Sega locations to GIGO. It's a major cultural loss, and it was surreal to see videos of crews removing the SEGA signage from buildings.
Look on the bright side, at least they're making more money off of the Sonic The Hedgehog movies by Paramount

I still proudly display my Dreamcast in my office. Played hundreds of hours of Phantasy Star Online, Crazy Taxi, Space channel 5, Jet Set Radio and so many more. It was an amazing console that was completely mismanaged.
Wayyyy ahead of it’s time.
I found an old Dreamcast a thrift store with all the cords, the controller and inside was a working disk of Sonic Adventure! The only thing I had to buy a VMU.
The problem for Dreamcast was that it was strike 4. SegaCD, 32X, and Saturn damaged the reputation beyond repair. Got mine for like $50 after they announced the stop of production. Amazing value at the time :)

One of the happiest days in my 90s childhood was when dad surprised us with a Sega Mega Drive. And the monthly visit to the game stores to buy cartridges... *unadulterated joy*... Thank you SEGA
I was always a SEGA gamer, owning every console from the master system to the Dreamcast even having the Sega CD and 32X. I purchased the Saturn and a few months later won a PS1. The PS1 was excellent but having more games for the Saturn I sold the PS1 and stuck with SEGA until their death in the console market. Many a fun time had, thanks to SEGA. "To be this good takes ages, to be this good takes SEGA"

@@linuxdood5283 true, it was a poorly thought out and delivered product. Unfortunately for me I was suckered into the tiny amount of marketing they gave it. I think I had 3 games for it. The incredibly awful Batman Returns being one of them.
I was the only kid in the block who had a NES, other kids looked up on me as I was their leader. Until another kid had a genesis, and my throne was taken away.
I remember how kids used to cram into our living room to play SNES after school 😁

It’s sad that SEGA declined from their console years, but as a publisher I feel like they’ve been excellent the last 5+ years. The Yakuza series is my favorite right now and the next batch of games are by far my most hyped!
They're also the publisher for the Total War series, one of my all-time favorites.
It's too bad the Yakuza series is no more. They are giving the series a brand new name and with a new protagonist I could see why. Like a Dragon plays nothing like the old Yakuza games anyways.
@@VOAN It’s the original Japanese name and while I do prefer the Yakuza name I get it. I also liked Like a Dragon a lot but totally get why some don’t because of the combat. At least the spin-offs will have the action combat

Speaking of the yakuza franchise, there are 2 new games coming out next year (like a dragon ishin and like a dragon the man who erased his own name) and like a dragon 8 in 2024.
unless you were around at the time you have no idea what a game changer the playstation was . just the very act of going to a store and buying the thing was an event in itself . as a newly turned 18 year old with my very 1st credit card and a car full of friends more excited than i was ,as they got to play for free . i remember it like it was yesterday
I was 5 when that thing dropped. It was my first console.
The PlayStation wasn't the only CD-ROM based system with hundreds of games, arcade sound, and 3D graphics capabilities. Sega had released the Sega CD three years earlier at the same price point but brought over dozens of lazy ports and shitty FMV games. Of 204 games to reach the market, perhaps 20 were fantastic (Soul Star, Batman, Sonic CD, Snatcher, Luna series), a few were decent, but a majority were absolutely awful.
SEGA should've poured all of that 32X money and marketing into bringing out perfect arcade ports, great jRPGs, league licensed sports games, and great 3D graphics that the Sega CD was clearly capable of. Ironically, we would see none of this on the Saturn, which managed to sell fewer consoles in North America than the "failed" Sega CD. Not only that, but the release of the 32X and the Saturn against the backdrop of the Neptune, Jupiter, Pluto, etc, roadmap left developers and customers confused and unwilling to risk ANOTHER $400 on a company that seemed to have spontaneously gone insane.
I understand exactly what you mean brother. That was an experience. The first time I saw Battle Arena Tohshinden I was blown away. Good times.
It won because of amazing games like twisted metal, resident evil, tomb raider, etc
I had a Genesis when I was growing up. I loved it because it had the Madden NFL games. I’d say that not just celebrities, but specifically sports games with big names (and licensed) is what made Sega successful for a good stretch.
My dad had a Sega Genesis and that was my first console. Madden, Sonic, NBA Jam, and MK. I loved the innovativeness of the games back then, it felt like everyone was at least trying something new. It may have worked, sometimes not, but at least trying. It is not like that now to me.
Games were also much smaller endeavors back then. Modern AAA titles cost tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars to create, and with bigger investments comes a smaller willingness to stray from proven formulas. That's why you see the most experimentation in the smaller indie space.
There's a lot of experimentation and neat ideas in the indie space, but you have to look. Most of the indie games that get put on a big stage aren't that special either.
That last part about always innovating is still true, but in the indie games market instead.

You didn't mention Nintendo's and Sega's different strategies regarding game licensing and development. Nintendo had a lot of control over the games developed for their system, and while this protected them (remembering the video game crash), it was also very restrictive and prohibitively costly for third-party developers wanting to make a game; lockout, reverse engineering, and related lawsuits also play into it.
Game developers found the Saturn difficult to work with, and the Dreamcast's controllers were just awful. Sega released stop-gap accessories for the Genesis rather than waiting for the Saturn, and then prematurely released the Saturn. The Saturn wasn't on the market very long before being replaced by the Dreamcast.
Don't get me wrong-I love my Genesis and Saturn-but the poor decisions, and disagreements between North America and Japan, eliminated them from the console industry.
If I recall, Tom Kalinske the US Sega president wanted the Saturn launch delayed a bit and the 32X take the reins for a bit to allow for it to be more mature, of course the smartest thing to have done would've been the original plan. Say yes to Sony when they offered the Playstation. With Sega's game and console making skills and Sony's massive production centers and budgets, Nintendo would've had a bleak future.
Reading the articles on wikipedia about the DreamCast's controller and comparing that to the N64's is interesting. I have, as much as I love my N64 to bits, always found the 64's controller to be awkward as hell, while the DC's has always seemed quite ergonomic, especially on any comparative basis between the two. Guess I'm in the minority though as I also preferred 360's controller over a DualShock.

When Sonic came out was intended to show the fast processing of graphics. It was impressive, nothing seen like that before in home games

I own a Dreamcast, and I had just purchased it a few months ago. It is the best console I have ever owned. The games, everything about it is so charming. It introduced me to the Sonic Adventure series, which continues to be my favorite gaming series. I wish more people had purchased it and appreciated it for how amazing it truly is. It still holds up today as a solid console.
Get Shenmue 1 amd 2 if you can. Resident evil code veronica and dead or Alive 2 were great on Dreamcast as well. Power stone was fun. etc
Shenmue 2 came out on Xbox.
I had everything from the genesis up to the dreamcast. A full size genesis with a 32x on top and a full size sega CD under it was a sight to behold. I had it all. Wish I never got rid of it.

Loved Sega as a kid in the 90s. Wondered if this was going to touch on Sega World in London. That was one of the most visible signs of Sega's decline - it was closed and left to rot for decades in full view of millions of people visiting The Trocadero in London. At its height, it was probably the most exciting place in the world to a 10-year-old. My uncle was one of the first UK importers of the Sega Mega Drive (the UK name for the Genesis) and I remember the first time my cousin showed me Sonic - completely blew everything before it away (it had just been Nintendo Gameboys for us up to that point). We were hooked for years!

Eh I’d say it’s a mix of all of the above. I remember when the Dreamcast came out and I knew one person that owned it. PS2 was already crazy hyped and Sega was kind of dead by then. The Genesis was the only console in America that really landed with audiences. I’ve never met anyone who owned a Saturn in the 90s and I’ve never seen a Sega CD in my life.
If im not mistaken: the 32x was made by the american studio and the Japanese studio made the saturn, both behind eachother's backs, at the same time.
Sega has a long history of competing against themselves and rarely winning. That's all you really need to know.

Honestly, it was the Genesis peripheries that killed them, along with the terrible marketing of the Saturn....like, i honestly thought you needed a Genesis just to play the Saturn back then, because it was so confusing....if they just went straight from the Genesis to the Saturn (and lowered the price like the PS1), they'd probably still be in the console market today.
Also, Arcades where huge in the 1990s, and the gaming magazines all over the shelves would promote sick games but a lot of them were overseas only. I think Sega Saturn was my favorite until I switched over to Sony PS1 in the late '90s.
I also remember all the hype of Sony PS2, even back then it was $500 for a total package w/game- although PS2 really lacked games for the first several months. To this day Im not totally impressed with Playstation games only a few really stand out to me
@@delljr2769 that's weird because a lot of people switch to PlayStation because of their exclusives. While gamepass was cool and PC has a lot to offer, people generally agree that Sony have the best games except maybe Forza which might have surpassed Gran Turismo with their latest game.
i was a huge sega fan. had the gamegear, mega drive, mega cd, Saturn and dreamcast. my first job in london when i was 17 was for a company that was the virtual ISP for segasoft. The dream arena chat staff were based there as well. we used to have dreamcasts in the break out room with any game we wanted to play. I collect retro games consoles now and love researching the history of gaming. looking back its cool that i have a very tiny link to Sega. Sonic forever!
Me and my older brother were actually early adopters with the Sega Gaming Consoles, owning the Master System, Saturn and Dreamcast systems! Overall we were happy with all of them, but our biggest issue was really the lack of 3rd Party Support and gaming options!
If the consoles had a wider library of new games, I think it would have definitely saved them!
So, you never owned the Genesis? I had the Master System, Genesis and Dream cast... I skipped out on the Saturn for the PS1 and later the N64.

He LITERALLY gave all his money away and didnt expect to get it back. He was truly, if not one of the only, millionaire/billionaires to ever be this gracious.

I travel to Japan in 2020 just before the pandemic strikes the world. It was my first time in the country and when I'm a Nintendo fan I've enjoyed every bit of the japanese gaming scene, one of those bits is visiting any arcade gallery avaiable in the city like Round One, Taito Game Stations and SEGA Buildings. I keep so much memories from those places because in my country the arcade scene is dead, so time later when SEGA sold it's arcade division and the buildings got rebranded I felt a bit of what makes Japan the country we admire and love died, even when the arcades are still making noise and the building are still operating, but now there are not the charm of SEGA anymore
I used to play Unreal Tournament on my Dreamcast ... It was so much phone to play with 3 friends at the same time. One of the best memories from my childhood 🥇
I live in the UK and the Genesis was called the SEGA Megadrive. My brother and I started our love of consoles with the SEGA MasterSystem and loved games, such as Alex Kid, Fantasy Zone, WonderBoy, etc. Then we upgraded to the MegaDrive.
Everyone else was buying Nintendo, but we felt a loyalty towards SEGA, especially Sonic and it paid off with Mortal Combat (even though we weren’t really aloud to play it ☺️). Then there were games like Streets of Rage, ToeJam and Earl, Golden Axe, Bomberman, Earthworm Jim and Altered Beast. It was such a great console whilst it lasted.
Then, one Christmas our parents scraped their hard earned money together and bought my brother and I a Sony PlayStation and we’ve stuck with the PS ever since.

I grew up in the late 80s and early 90s. Always had both nintendo and sega consoles but always preferred Nintendo. I will say in the last couple years some of my favorite new games have the Sega name on them. Yakuza like a dragon, lost judgement
Lost Judgement was my personal pick for game of the year in 2021. Such an awesome game and one the best in the entire Yakuza franchise.
Reverse for me, friend. Went from NES to Genesis, probably around 96 / 97 went to PC. While ya'll had Chrono Trigger and Super Mario World, we had Shining Force and Phantasy Star. To each their own, but what a great era to have gamed.

Late 80s/early 90s were the best times man. We got the best of both decades.
You should look up the current state of Sega. They sold their arcade management shares to Genda. All of their arcades in Japan are converted to GIGO. Decline of arcade gaming and the pandemic impacted them hard. They closed one of the arcades in Akihabara and how iconic it was with the hamster tube escalators.

Sega will be fine. Arcade gaming is back on an upswing, and Sega will always be a big competitor in the arcade business. No need for the doom and gloom, Sega will be fine.

Genda is Managing Sega's Arcade Amusement Centers. SEGA is STILL involved in Arcades in Japan.
Don’t forget that Sega was always a formidable foe in the arcade space which they created. I worked for a coin op business when I was in college in the late 90s and the demand for Daytona USA cabinets was insane.

My very first game console was Sega Genesis. My favorite game on the Genesis was Streets of Rage. I'd play that game after coming home from work, as a stress reliever. It was very satisfying to beat the big bad boss at the end. And I do have the various Sega consoles, but Genesis is still my favorite Sega console.
Streets of Rage was epic! And the 3rd one had a boxing kangaroo which was kinda a secret because he started out as a villain, but if you killed his companion, a robotic chicken dude, then the kangaroo become a playable character. Oh the nostalgia! Also my first console too 🙌🏼

I was a small child when I got my Genesis, I mainly played the Disney games like The Lion King and Aladdin etc. After that it was Playstation all the way for me. Most of my gaming memories come from PS1 and PS2, those days can never be replaced man.
Sega Genesis was my first console my parents couldn't buy me a PS1 at the time, What fun I had on that console!
I was a Sega fanboy from 89 to about 1993, when I got a SNES. Still loved both systems. My brother and I got the Dreamcast launch day on 9-9-99. That night, it was so packed and hyped up that it felt like Sega's comeback was inevitable. Alas, Sega's time had long since been over.

I was a Sega kid...had the Genesis, Sega CD, 32X, Game gear and Dreamcast. I still have them for the exception of my Game gear which was stolen. I think the other major reason the Dreamcast didn't do well is because their games were easy to burn so they were heavily pirated versions which hurt their game sales drastically. The Dreamcast though was an awesome console. If they ever made an console again...I would definitely buy it.

My mate had the Sega Saturn as a teen and at the time I was amazed by it. We used to play Ken Griffy Junior baseball and it blew my mind how good it was.🤯
My parents owned a Genesis and a Dreamcast and I have so many fond memories of the Dreamcast days. I was still in elementary school when it first came out. Playing my first Resident Evil game, continuing my love of Sonic The Hedgehog, playing off the wall games like Psychic Force 2012 and Blue Stinger, all of these made my childhood awesome in my opinion. Miss my Dreamcast so much...

You failed to mention the 32X add-on for the Genesis, which may have been an even bigger loss than the Sega CD. I remember seeing game stores selling it on clearance for $20 only a few months after release.
Of course. Add that to the fact that they touted it as the future, even though the Saturn was on the way, and the fact that the entire reason the 32X even existed, was to extend the Genesis/Mega Drive's lifespan. Many have singled out and blamed the 32X as being the sole reason for their decline.

Yea, exactly, I actually have 6 games for it, and never tried them (Clerence rack), and I opened my 32X 4 months ago, I it still had the slip, Child World for $16.99 on clearance.

Have to mention the game gear. I had one as a kid and at the time the gameboy was still black and white (or green) I usually used it plugged in so the battery life wasn't a big issue. I do remember the accessories for it were pretty innovative. I had the wide gear (basically a magnifier to make the screen look bigger) and I distictly recall in the accessory catalog they had an adapter that would let you use the gg as a TV as well (i wanted one but just didnt have the money)
Still, it seems like it never made it very big and I'm sure had way fewer games than the gameboy

Quite possibly yeh. A soft spot at least. Memories of Road Rash etc. I guess a tricky first console IMHO because I’d been on PC already at that point.
But after a short gap on the 3DO, I felt my best console was the N64. It has to boil down to game quality, execution, playability but also how immersive they felt. No PC games grabbing my attention during that period, and that was enough to cement my preference for simplicity of consoles thereafter.

I remember one of the coolest things I had for a while that no one seems to remember is the Sega Channel. It was like a cartridge accessory that hooked up to the internet and you would get a bunch of games that you could play every two weeks or so. It was like the first streaming service for games.
Every time I watch your videos I feel like this is the quality, information, entertainment and visuals my teachers expect for my class presentations.
I had a Genesis actually, the games are quite fun. Also they’ve been doing well enough just making games I don’t think they’ll ever make their own console ever again. Also, I think it would’ve been good to mention the movie adaptations that have come out recently. Which are actually on their way to becoming the best video game movies ever.
I loved the Lion King gam on Genesis. It both looked awesome and it was fun as hell.

I was 19 in 1994 so the Genesis was the last game system I bought when I was in high school a couple of years before. I honestly spent far more time playing my old NES games than I ever did playing the Sega and while the cd add on didn't have many games the games it did have rocked so I was glad to have bought the cd add on at the time the graphics were so much better than on any other system that it was worth the extra cash in my view.
People act like it was a joke now, but back then the Sega CD was the most cutting-edge thing you could buy (until the 3DO arrived). As an SNES owner, I used to drool over the Sega CD. I would have loved to have one, but being a kid I had no choice in the matter.

@@rars0n Yeah, it's so weird how many Sega things are considered "flops" and "failures" like the Sega CD or Dreamcast. Back then if you weren't #1 on the sales chart, you were labeled a total failure and a joke!! If a musician had a huge #1 album and the next one didn't sell 100 million copies the media would label it an embarrassing flop. I'm 33 and just got my first Sega CD in 2019 and I haven't even played all the big games but any game I do play I am blown away by the audio. It's like amazing 2D graphics (and some 3D effects) but now instead of the 8bit tunes and sound effects it's full blown orchestras, rock music, real sound effects and voice actors in 1992! Snatcher is a jaw dropping masterpiece.
@@awill891 Snatcher is awesome, and the Sega CD is home to some games you can't play anywhere else, not to mention improved versions of cart games. Yeah, sure, the potential may not have been fully utilized, but there's enough gems in the library to make it worthwhile. And as someone who loves to explore old games that I missed the first time around, I appreciate systems like the Sega CD and the 3DO that don't have an absolute sea of titles to browse through just to find something good. There's no 20 different versions of a particular sports game, for example, that you need to try in order to find the best one.
Also, I loved them back then and I STILL have a soft spot for the cheesy FMV stuff. The graininess of the Sega CD in particular is just so of-its-time that I can't help but love it in combination with the cheesy writing and bad acting (and the sometimes good acting).
I got the Sega Master System in Christmas ‘88. It was my first console. I loved playing Astro Warrior, Great Baseball, Great Golf, California Games and Outrun. Still have the system to this day. Lots of great memories indeed and once in a while we play with my Mom and Sisters. 😊
The first SEGA product I had was the Master System, because it had the Ninja games which I loved. The next year that followed the Genesis came out, it was affordable for my parents & I was blessed in getting it with games like Altered Beasts, & Michael Jackson's Moonwalker. A few years later we were able to afford the CD attachment which I seemed to be the only one who loved those games, mostly the gun games with the Old West theme (Mad Dog). There was a Formula One racing game & a Star Wars game for the 3DX attachment I bought, but that was the end of SEGA systems for me because I had enough money to buy a Sony PlayStation then I never went back while my High School buddies had the lousy Dream Cast system which bombed rightfully so.
The 90's console wars with Nintendo & Sega has always been one of the most fascinating parts of gaming history if you ask me~😗
Nice video. A few side notes, The Sega Master System was significantly more popular than the NES in many European markets as well as South America, Brazil in particular.
Also their success with the Genesis was never mirrored in their home country, even while it was outselling Nintendo in the US and European markets it was a distant third in Japan behind both the NES/SNES and the PC engine. Lastly and sadly a bit ironically, the Sega Saturn was actually very popular in Japan for awhile outselling both the PlayStation and the Nintendo 64 and becoming their most popular system in Japan. They could never quite "put it all together" and have success in all markets at the same time.
Man, I'll always be a Sega girl at heart. As a kid, my parents bribed me to learn my multiplication tables with a Sega CDX... and it was the first video game system I ever owned and playing it is definitely a core childhood memory. I still own it and my Dreamcast. NGL, if Sega ever got back into the console wars... I'd be here for it.

Not to mention how late to the party they were with SEGA WORLD in Sydney Australia. Opened in 1997. As a Sydney CBD arcade gamer, the high point was around 1986 regarding number of venues but the video arcade collapse then arrived and by 1990 two thirds were gone. All of the major blossoming's in Video arcade attendance had come and gone by the time SegaWorld arrived. Left competing with it's own console market.

My first system was Super Nintendo, but I enjoyed playing the Sega Genesis at my buddy's house. He had an X-Men game that we took turns playing. Later, when the Dreamcast came out, one of my workmates bought one and brought it to work. We mostly played that game with the light guns and it was really fun! Great graphics, too! If it had kept going, I might have bought one. I think it was more expensive than my Playstation, though.
It was the same price as the PS when it came out; and the following year they started making price reductions.
Also, probably difficult for you to find out but even in Japan, the popularity of SEGA's gaming centers are in decline. Their most famous one in Tokyo will be closed on September 25th 2022.
They sold all of their arcades early this year, so it’s not really their decline anymore, but the one’s who bought them.

It's the converted GIGO arcade closest to JR Akihabara Station. Can't get anymore prime real estate than this. The neighboring electronics store with the tube escalators got closed down too, but found another tenant. The more iconic Sega store closed down prior on the main thoroughfare, the one with the orange escalators.
A memory I will always have is waking up Christmas morning and find a Sega Genesis under the tree with Sonic the Hedgehog, Taz, and Kid Chameleon. I don't have it anymore, but I still play the re-releases on other systems and they always take me back.
Sega screwed themselves by getting in a hurry. The Genesis was solid, but the MegaBlaster had issues calibrating with games other than the one it came with (I tended to just use it as a make-believe prop) and the 32x was junk.
it may not have been the first game I unwrapped that christmas, but I remember Lightening Force: Quest for the Darkstar / Thunder Force 4 was among them. Good lord.
I had all the Sega consoles, loved them.
The Dream cast was so ahead of its time that people are very slow to jump on new tech. As the narrator says, the Internet at the time wasn't upto scratch so made that part of the system pretty useless.
Also they needed to make more of the little handheld part that I think was also the memory card? It had a screen on it and you was meant to be able to play a few games on it but that also never took off.
Too bad, Dreamcast didn't last long enough though it was underrated. They should kept making those games.
I'm 35 and had my first console experience probably about 30 years ago. Friend of mine had a Master System.
Literally none of my friends had the Saturn despite many of them having the Mega Drive (Genesis). It's 2022 and I've still never played one. Even my retro collector friend doesn't have a Saturn at this time.
But I do remember how stupendously expensive the Saturn was at the time and how few games it had. The PlayStation was cheaper at launch which probably influenced buying patterns - we were too young to get our own systems so parents often favoured the cheaper one.
One of my friends had a Dreamcast, but even he was meh about it. We grew into PS and N64 people.

My mom was so good to me and my brother growing up I always got the Nintendo for Christmas and my brother always got a Sega. We had every console that Sega and Nintendo both made so we got to experience both sides of the equation

I had the Genesis back in it’s heyday and I loved it. And then N64 came out and I got addicted to it instead. I still have a Genesis console along with their handheld version (which was very cool back in the day) and a few of my favorite games. I have aged out of the current gaming world now but I still love the older stuff and I’m not even ashamed to admit it 😂
I bought a Genesis brand new in 1993, I still have it, it still works perfectly. Every now and then I’ll set it up and play the old favorites like Sonic, Earthworm Jim, Vectorman

Same here dude, I got it for Christmas when I was very young. Golden Axe 2, Taz Mania, Rocket Knight Adventures, X-men, X-men 2, and Lethal Enforcers 2 with the light gun.

My ex-wife worked for a small video game company in the 90's that made CD-I games for the Phillips game system (that went nowhere). They also made games for the Dreamcast, so she had one with every game made. The company she worked for was banking all their money on a Shark interactive CD. They were down the street from Discovery at the time who were also getting ready to launch their first Shark week. Discovery beat them to the release (yes they were completely different platforms), and her company went under and was bought out by Bethesda games.
Amazing video. My first gaming console ever was the Sega Genesis and my first video game ever was Primal Rage. I must have been like 7 or 8.
Cool to see the mention of Iron Man game. I worked at Secret Level after it was acquired by Sega and became their only US studio at the time. We worked on Iron Man and Golden Axe: Beast Rider while I was there. Unfortunately, the company was shut down just a few years after they bought it, not long after the 2008 economic downturn.
This definitely hurt because I still have my Dreamcast and my kids loved it growing up! I also own a PS2 and Nintendo 64 at the same time. I remember the shock when I found out Sega wasn't making games anymore for Dreamcast. It took years and PS4 before Sonic looked as good as it did on Dreamcast!

Many kids today don't understand the shock value of Night Trap. It's all tame and campy by today's standards. Compare to Beavis and Butt-head in the early 90s and how tame it is compare to cartoons today, especially South Park and Family Guy.

Sega genesis was my first console (love) as a kid. 35 y.o now, was probably 9 or 10 when I got it, and it was my childhood friend. It was always a delight for friday night when block buster had the latest game come out. Now in mid-life crisis I go back and play games I couldn't finish like splatter house or comix zone and relive a greater sense of achievement with knowing what I know today which I didn't back then. Call me sad, but it makes me feel really powerful and gives a greater sense of accomplishment. I was around when Sega Saturn was a HUGE FLOP!
Back in Western NY, there was a department store called "Hills". Whenever we'd go shopping there, I'd head to the games section and they had all the consoles set up where you could play them. While mom shopped, I spent the whole time there playing games because we were always too broke to afford more than a few arcade games. I played ALL the Master System games they had and got one for Christmas. That controller gave SERIOUS gamer thumb. I literally wore down the skin on my thumb to the point it looked like a peeling sunburn. Once the Genesis came out, I was all about it, and ended up even getting the Sega-CD version.
I still have my Sega CD, it still functions, I still play it, and it's still amazing.

Loved all of my Sega consoles. Strider on the Genesis was amazing. Final Fight CD on the Sega CD was my favorite home home console release. Xmen vs SF with the extram RAM cart on the Saturn was insane and MvC 1&2 on the Dreamcast was pretty spectacular. Lots of fun games. Definitely missed in the console space.
Dreamcast was such a great console! Sonic games were amazing, Crazy Taxi, Power Stone were classics.

One of my earliest memories is playing Phantom2040 on the Genesis. Loved that game and still do.
You forgot about the Sega 32x add-on device for those also limited round of 32x games... I just remember the few games from that like one was called Metal Head, another was some car racing game, and ALSO it had a STAR WARS game to it, which was really fun! I only remember playing the 32x for like one or two years with my brothers (+ uncle) before we kinda were also transitioning to the PS1/2 and nintendo 64. What kind of brought Sega back during the PS1-2/N64 was some sort of monthly online PPV subscription with SEGA with your local cable company provider -- it allowed us to use only our TV to log into a cloud-type program and we could play any 30 or 40 available games for that month... they would release special games during october (our favorite month) was like Bomber Man and the Zombies Ate My Neighbors was fun as hell. So, the latter story of this was one of the last glimpses of SEGA in our lives. (don't forget MK2!!!, we used to know EVERY fatality move for EVERY character, haha!)

I was mostly a Nintendo player growing up. I began becoming a fan with their fall from the console market and becoming a maker of games. It started with Skies of Arcadia Legends and, to a lesser extent, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle for the GameCube and its continued with the Yakuza series.
Panzer Dragoon, Zwei & Saga were 3 of the best games ever made. Revolutionary, but they are the kind of games Sega made back then. Sega will always be my favourite game maker simply through nostalgia.

Dreamcast were one of those consoles that became popular with time. Dreamcast is massively popular in the retro community.

That's because it was the first truly modern game console to demonstrate modern 3D graphics and playability. You could advertise its limit pushers today, and people would think that they're modern console or arcade games.

I got my dreamcast in the 2000's maybe 2005 or something. I got it from my mom's friend's son. He was about to go to college and offered his dreamcast to me. I never had a console before then so of course I was excited. It was awesome. It came with sonic adventure 1&2, this nhl game, this racing game that let you grab powerups and put weapon attatchments on the cars, ford racing, dragon taming game, and power stone. I may have had others but I also loved how it looked, the start up sound. The controller had this like detachable remote on it that made visuals when you're playing something. Sadly one day I went out with my family and my sister at home left it on all day so when I got back the screen was like unusually dark. I turned it off and it never turned back on. I want to try to work for sega and make consoles honestly.
in my opinion the accessories were a large reason why the downward spiral started. the sega cd and 32x were expensive and weren't supported for long, which really screwed over consumers. it made the company look rudderless and greedy. it damaged consumer confidence, and they never really recovered from it.
Because of the Mega CD, Sonic CD is pound for pound the most expensive game I ever had... because there really wasn't much else to play on that system.
The locked ecosystems and lack of suppliers made the accessories insanely expensive. I remember shopping for a basic joystick in the 90s and it was $75. (That's about $160 for a basic joystick in 2022). If you looked at the "behind the glass" accessories at Toys R Us it was incredible but also out of most people's price range.
I would agree. They would have been better off to put the time and money spent on the SEGA CD and 32x to the next generation console.
@@tcaudiobooks737 Road Avenger was awesome when it came out. It only lacked in replays because it was a complete trial and error game. Once you knew the sequence of buttons it was easy.
I've seen a few of these videos and they all take the perspective of the gamer. The bigger problem was the damage the Sega/Mega-CD did to retail confidence. It did not sell like the Genesis/Mega-Drive. Sega lost their prime spot in the stores and retailers weren't as keen to promote them. Like if Amazon suddenly bumped off a major company's products from their main pages today. It had a knock-on effect that eventually let Sony's marketing dollars fill the space. (I worked for SEGA in the 90s). The other big issues were Japan's bubble economy and the over-spending done during that boom phase.

In 1997, They opened Sega World in Sydney city. It’s was a place with rides and games based on Sega. It closed after 3 years
I have the Genesis, CD, and Dreamcast and all still working. Favorite was the Dreamcast, it was ahead of its time with a lot of great games, experienced my 1st MMORPG thru Phantasy Star Online. Even had the keyboard to talk to people too, was such an awesome experience. Also bought the re-release of Shenmue because I never got to play Shenmue II which was only released in Asia & UK. SEGA was quite legendary although I never got to own a Saturn but I've played fighting games on it and it was the only console that sold a arcade style joystick pad which was pretty freaking narly for it's time. 🤓🤓
I owned a Master System and a Genesis and loved both systems. In 2022 I have an arcade cabinet with emulation for almost every system ever produced along with full game libraries. Good times!
Yes I ask for this video and it's come true. As a massive sonic fan Sega is always special but sadly they don't make consoles anymore . Which is sad because they used to compete with Nintendo and one up them at one point .
