Welcome to another episode of Challenger Approaching! In this series, we discuss characters who could find their way into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or future entries, then go into ludicrous detail on what they would be like if they joined the fight for real!
This episode takes us back to the Galar region, this time for a more hands-on look at its history and legends. With a second Fighters Pass officially confirmed, Pokémon Sword and Shield's cast of new characters are in prime position to have a chance at joining the fight next. But while talk has almost exclusively centered on Galar's starters, its feature legendaries--and Zacian in particular--are very much capable of bringing something new to a game that is actively seeking out new mechanics and ideas.
But what could this literal legendary hero offer that'd stand above the rest? And just how would a quadrupedal beast with a sword function in Smash's environment, much less thrive? Let's take a look.

I DEFINETLY think that a non-starter would be my preferred pick for a Gen 8 rep. All 3 starters have potential, don't get me wrong, but I think that having too many starters would start to get bland. Gen 6's "Rep" was a starter, and so was Gen 7, and I don't want the Pokemon newcomers to start to run together. Zacian would be a fun pick, or they could go Toxtricity, or Obstagoon, or Dragapult, or Hatterene, or Grimmsnarl...
Orbeetle would be another cool fighter. Corviknight too if you could get past the whole flight thing. Realistically, I think Urushifu is gonna be the one who makes it in

Greninja, Incineroar, Charizard, Bulbasaur, Squirtle and Pikachu are "Starters".
Heck, even Pichu should count as one, since people just treat the entire Evolutionary Line as Starters even tho the 1st/2nd Stages aren't Starters (Squirtle and Pika are the only *real* Starters in Smash)

I’ve always had a Low Chance Wish for Nergigante from Monster Hunter to make a spot, but Zacian does sound very interesting!
Nergigante would honestly be an interesting and down right terrifying character in a fighting game with his regenerative spikes and all. But if Nintendo were to choose a Monster Hunter rep, I'd feel that they'd pick the Hunters more than anything since they encapsulate the entire franchise as a whole. Still, if Nergi ever got into a fighting game whether be it Smash or a MH spin off, I WILL MAIN HIM!
Michael Qijieling Oh my god imagine being like byleth and using multiple weapons. Recover could be insect glaive related, side B could be a great sword, neutral game could be dual blades. The potential is endless.
I'm still hoping for Rillaboom to be the Gen 8 Rep. He could be a heavy with focus on range, playing, swinging, and even throwing his drum in attacks. His Final Smash could have him Gigantamax, then grab enemies with those hair bones before bouncing them off of a drum and into the sky.

Frankly I always thought the criticism was there were too many “Fire emblem” as it wasn’t accurately representing the series the characters come from, not showing/utilizing the other weapons in the weapon triangle. Now being mostly represented through Byleth. Honestly I’m neutral on the actual argument but I thought it would be something good to bring up.
From what I saw it is swordfighters (or at least swordfighter people aren't bandwagoning on) that are the problem. People got upset and called hero another anime swordsman the moment he was on screen.
I am a huge Fire Emblem fan and I hate the representation of Fire Emblem in Smash. It’s not just the swords, it’s the fact that all but three of the characters are from the last seven years of a thirty-year-old franchise, an era defined by a generic modern anime aesthetic. There are so many characters to draw from from across the series that could represent game mechanics in different ways, but instead we have a lot of swords.

People complained so much about the fact that Byleth used a sword but we're absolutely desperate for Sora to be in smash.

Grimsnarl would feel nicer due to his stretchy limbs and a great typing for a moves. He has a lot of potential since he has two unique attacks and we haven’t gotten a grappler in a while.
This honestly feels like a perfect moveset for Zacian. I honestly would be super down her to be in. I'm between her, the starters, Sirfetch'd and Toxtricity, cuz they all have the most personality out of the new games that feel like they'd make cool movesets
All the movesets I've made for Pokemon typically center around a theme that derives from their design or personality. I've done a Psyduck moveset where it has a headache meter similar to Arsene, where its normal attacks are powered up and completely change its specials from Water to Psychic moves, I made one for Crabrawler where it's like an anti-Little Mac, using its climbing tendency to give it great movement, but making it slower and more opportunistic, and most recently a Mr. Mime moveset where all of its attacks are based on mime routines and pantomime with 'invisible objects' and barriers. I feel like there's a lot of potential in very archetypal Pokemon having very unique movesets
I want to talk about the zeroing in on the starter pokemon in predicting pokemon smash characters. I remember everyone picking Decidueye before Ultimate released and I was sitting there wondering why no one mentioned Alola forms or Ultra beasts two new additions to Pokemon from that game. Yes we got a starter but it saddens me that people only really consider three pokemon out of 80.

Man, I’m glad I’m not the only one who had this thought. Zacian would be so damn cool.
Honestly, if we can get a swsh rep, I personally hope we get Toxtricity. Poisons and electricity plus music makes fun potential. Having moves like venoshock that can be a command grab that has increased damage and knockback if the target is poisoned. Final smash can be gigantamax and max move.
Zacian would probably be one of my first picks too. I wouldn't mind Cinderace or Inteleon, but I'm sick of Sakurai taking the easy road and choosing a starter. I want something really unexpected.

@@Mystic-Aidan Sakurai himself said that he chose Greninja and Incineroar. He might not be the one choosing this DLC, but he is the one who's largely responsible for the fanbase suddenly believing starters are the only Pokemon worth considering.

I really appreciate the introduction you made regarding the controversy with swords characters. I honestly feel the Smash community has become a bit too judgmental on the cosmetics of characters in Smash rather than judging them based on their actual moveset, and it also feels like an excuse at times to try to justify why a character shouldn’t get in over another despite some of their preferred characters also wielding swords. I’m honestly getting sick of hearing people say that all sword characters are the same and that all the FE characters are just Marth clones solely because they all wield swords as it’s far from the truth
Honestly, for me, it's both the lack of variety between fire emblem characters and the sheer number
missingno miner yeah there are a lot and many of them are similar, but there are unique FE characters, mainly Robin, Corrin, and Byleth, and even Ike has a unique moveset despite only using a sword. I’m just tried of always hearing that all the swordfighters are the same even with the FE roster which isn’t true at all

congrats on finding the most controversial smash pick, making it feel unique, and nailing it.
You're right though about Pokemon having a really good chance at being a part of Fighter's Pass 2. But instead of Zacian for the reasons you listed like Spirits may or may not being able to be upgraded to playable. The new legendary Urshifu from Part 1 of the Expansion Pass seems like a very likely candidate. With it already being an established fighter in game, a legendary Pokemon, and would could very easily release around the time the DLC comes out.

I still am disappointed we never got that Lycanrok, but I'll definitely take this Zacian as an alternative. Sounds interesting, being such a fast and combo focused heavy

In Spirit Battles, you could probably cheese "The enemy is giant" battles, like Giga Mac, with just Fast Final Smash Meter and Zacian.
I would love see more some canines characters in Smash and that was an interesting character concept for Zacian though I would like to see Amaterasu to be in Smash

Hey man, while I dou t many of your picks would make it in, kudos for such an awesome, and well thought out concept. While doubtful that it could happen, if any if your recent conveots made it in, I would sure be happy!
I feel like the idea the "too many swords" not extending to "to many fistfighters" holds very little water. There's a ton of fistfighter characters in Smash who have very different moves, visually and functionally. Mario, Captain Falcon, and Ryu could all fall into this category. These three characters, despite being fiery fist fighters, have very different looking and functioning moves. Ryu's forward smash is a kick, Captain Falcon's is an elbow strike, and Mario's is a fireball explosion. Then compare Marth, Link, and Cloud. All of their forward smashes are forward sword slash. It's pretty disappointing. I don't doubt that there's more potential with swordfighters, but Smash seems to continue to want to stick with swordfighters rarely using abilities without their swords. Let's take Marth, Link, and Cloud again. We know for a fact that these characters have unique abilities, so in moves outside of their special moves, let's try using them for that forward smash. Marth can keep his as a sword slash, Link can use one of the giant hammers from the Zelda series, and Cloud can use a magic attack. There, now that's more unique and interesting!
Ultimately, I feel like the problem with sword fighters in smash is that unlike fist fighters or blaster users or mages, sword fighters tend to have very similar and not unique looking attacks. After all, there's only so many ways you can swing a sword and make it look like a strong attack. If a character has unique abilities, they need to be shown off more in that character's moveset, and I think sword fighters get so much hate because looking over the course of Smash's history, outside of special moves, all the swordfighters tend to just use sword swings. But that's just my take.
I mean, they definitely can feel similar, but almost all of the Swordies in Smash have something else to them that makes them different, although that's kinda obvious. Also I think the fisties comparison was meant for rep talk, not moveset talk.
@@bubby-fi9mc Yeah, my intent was more to point out how one is treated as "over-repped" while the other isn't in the same situation. I don't have an issue with either happening as long as they have something that helps them stand out, but it's frustrating to watch such significant parts of the community say "hand-to-hand fighters are okay, but all sword users are the same". Feels like a double standard!

I wouldn't dislike the Fire Emblem characters in this game so much if they just used their weapons in more creative ways. Just look at the Lucina and Lyn mods for Project M, you can clearly see how characters could use swords in Smash without feeling so similar

Too be honest, I would honestly love another quadruped in smash.
And I dont believe it would be too hard to make it feel right either. Just make them really fast on the ground, have a fast running turnaround, good air speed, and heavy weight and voila. It will feel fast and stable just like a quadruped should.
And the idea of further mixing it up with a sword or shield like Zacian or Zamazenta is just something we need in the game and I dont know why the dev's haven't done it sooner.

I always thought of a Gen 8 Pokémon would get in it would be Toxtricity or Urshifu to die in to the DLC, but the concept for Zacian is too awesome to pass up

Personally I’ve always prefers zamazenta to Zacian and they did him dirty with the terrible moveset (seriously the introduced an attack that used your defence stat and didn’t give it to this tank nor any non-rest healing moves and his shield prevents the use of leftover so he’s stuck in OU

Gen 8 I had the boring pick of one of the starters or a Galan Pokemon Trainer but now I want Zacian in Smash as the Gen 8 rep because this concept for her was amazing, fit her theme of being a knight with honor
Might shout something real quick that is important to the “spirit” argument. When the Cuphead spirit event was active, if you fought Cuphead, you actually fought against Samus normally. But, if you had/bought the Cuphead mii costume (even during the event), the fighter of the spirit changed from Samus to a mii with the costume on.
I could totally see one of Zacian's alternate skins being based on the "hero of many battles" form
You know, since she moves her head to swing the sword, she probably had insanely beefy neck-muscles.

I know this would be asking a lot, but I feel like this episode could have benefited from a few sketches of some of the moves, to give an idea of what you're describing. With most characters, it's fairly easy to picture their moves as you describe them, but for a quadruped wielding a sword in its mouth, a reference would help to better get across what you're suggesting.
If we get a sword and shield rep I’d hope for:
Toxtricity: because, huge moveset potential, new Pokémon type, totally new aesthetic, and a type of fighter we don’t have in smash at all

Mii gunner has cuphead and there’s a cuphead Spirit and the fight is normally mega man but once u get the cuphead costume u have to fight the mii gunner

This is really good. I honestly expected they'd be heavy Sheik and you had a similar idea but a different presentation. Zacian in it's crowned form is often regarded as just as good or better than mega Rayquazza.
So I figured they'd have average aerials, combo normal's, an armored, buffing Down B, Fast smashes and jabs with tons of end lag and maybe 3 moves safe on shield. They'd have good aerial speed, but sub-par jump height and a recovery like Roy/DK fusion. They'd be a fast, even more committal Ganondorf.
Also i'd make the neutral B like Pikachu's side B and because Iron Head turns into Behemoth Blade. It'd be a fun nod to the mechanic in the game.
Imagine this a duo fighter of zacien and zamazenta
We now have even more hope for Zacian since not 1, but 2 spirits have gotten in.

I think for final smash should be like lightning chariot we’re you chose a part in the map and zacian dashes forward and zamazeta crash down in the location covering jumps and rolls then it starts a cinematic
I feel like this would be a good addition to smash. Another great contender would be the upcoming legendary that evolves, urshifu. Releasing urshifu early would not only be a great smash bros character but a great teaser for the upcoming isle of aromer and crowned tundra

Actually it can happen because min min joins the roster and created a fighter spirit but with a different art style so hopefully zacian (and probably zamazenta) will join the roster. The reason why I mentioned zamazenta is because he might be also including for sheild reason

I really love the moveset, I just would like to have the Intrepid Sword trigger when they enter battle as well, otherwise it's useless for rulesets and game modes where they only get one stock.

I like the concept overall, though my only beef with Zacian would be the bias it gets. It's got the better typing, stat buffs, tcg card. I just wanted Zamazenta to get something.
Alex Sanchez Mainly Body Press, it’s STAB, goes off it’s enormous defense and it get’s buffed because of it’s ability. The move was basically made for it but doesn’t learn it
I love the concept but i think you may have overlooked the fact that Iron Head is not availble for the Crowned Form of Zacian, that's the move that turns into Behemoth Blade once the Rusted Sword is equiped
I am aware--had to be in order to record that footage! I took some creative liberties there because I believe it makes the moveset better as a whole. Similar things have happened with canon movesets, like how Ness can't actually learn PK Fire or PK Thunder.

I would be excited to see another legendary Pokemon make it into Smash, because I think a lot of the legendaries would be interesting to see in Smash. I think it’s a bit of an missed opportunity honestly.
I kind of think having something like Pyra and Mythra where they could switch back and forth (with the move Ally Switch which they can learn with a TM) although I'm not sure how to create an interesting moveset for a dog with a shield.
What would be cool is their costumes (Yes, both Zacian & Zamazenta) could reference other Pokémon with notoriously high attacks and defense, like Rampardos & Bastiodon

To be honest I think Zamazenta would be a much better choice than Zacian. I think the design of Zamazenta is much more accepted by fans, and as much as I hate to say it, his shield like attacks would be more appealing than unique sword slashes.
U a red just say ting that cuz you got shield, how would it attack? Just ramming people for every attack? Combine that with a limited move pool, and the moveset would be much worse
@@AshenDust_ Not true, I have both Sword and Shield. I personally say this because of how it would look more natural for Zamazenta to be able to use headbutts and charges and rams and such compared to Zacian having what would likely be awkward head movements with his head.

I will say this. I personally would put Zacian and Zamazenta as a duo character like the ice climbers but have similar moves but little different so there weapon's make since for the moveset.
I'm still confused why the Z&Z spirit gives you sword attack up instead of Giant Slayer when their signature moves literally do double damage to Dynamaxed Pokemon.
I think toxricity has a chance making it as dlc fighter for smash, they also can give him two alts
Speaking of pokemon and swords,a pokemon that i think would be unique and have a unique gimmic,but probably wouldnt get in because it isnt a gen 8 pokemon is Aegislash.It could have a gimmic where you could change your stance at will (Blade and Shield Form) and it would be a new kind of design with it *being* the sword and it also having a shield.Its down special could be the form change,its up special be aerial ace as it swings itself upwards into the air,its neutral special could be shadow ball being a projectile that is slow but packs a punch if hit and its side special could be some form of slash (maybe fury cutter).Maybe its grab could be where it wraps the opponent in the cloth it has.I think he would have 3 jumps and be a heavyweight or super heavyweight (as it is relatively large and made of metal [i think]).I think it would be a great smash character.
Aerial ace is actually based off of a sword technique of a diagonally left upward the diagonally right upward slashes. Its called the swallowtail slice. Thats the name of the move in japan.
