Just responding to some of the comments...no this was not my fav meal but was a fun experience. No there was no tingling sensation because I think you need to request that from the chef(if they will even do it) because they have to intentionally leave some poison on the fish that your eating. The fish they serve here are not from farms so they were poisonous before served to you. I mentioned this was my last day again because this video was filmed in the evening. I also filmed in the morning. ANYWHOOOOOO I can still taste the slimy skin and unfortunately that will stay with me for the rest of my life...oh and BTW apparently the poison used to assassinate Kim Jung Nam was from a puffer fish so.....yea.
Sichuan peppercorns are a much safer way to get numbed lips and tongue. People die every year from fugu poisoning.
Strictly Dumpling. Thank you Micheal, I scratch it off my "things to eat while visiting Japan".
Love your videos. Keep up the good work.
Kim Jong Nam was assassinated with a binary concoction of VX Nerve agents, not tetrodotoxin.
The puffer fish toxin is a sodium channel blocker, like many molusks and snakes.
VX nerge gas is an ACh inhibitor.
The mechanisms of each are almost polar to each other. In laymen terms, puffer toxin inhibits muscles from contracting and you eventually die of respiratory failure. VX Nerge agents cause the continuous and uncontrolled spasm of muscles. Horrible fact about tetrodotoxin, you are fully conscious while your body begins to undergo full blown paralysis.
Strictly Dumpling l
TrappenWeisseGuy ; from what I understand most if not all deaths in recent years is from untrained people trying to prepare it themselves
What I wanna know is who the mad genius was that kept messing around with the puffer fish until he found the part that could be eaten without dying.
Thanks for taking my question wch I was thinking entire life 😂
Guy 1:*eats a random part of the pufferfish*
Guy 2: u good?
Guy 1: *dies from asphyxiation*
Guy 2: ok so that part isn't edible, now time to try this part
"First time eating raw fish"?! umm. That's like the first car you're test driving is a ferrari, or the first wine you've ever tasted is a Château Margaux... guy should have tried regular sushi for context
I wouldn't be surprised if they really did that to innocent people in the last. Humanity is capable of monstrosities
@@Yggdrasill8 100%. Could have served to a monkey or something too, who knows.
I've tried fugu three times and each time I don't remember much... cause as Mike said, it has little flavor. But I do remember it being randomly chewy with unexpected large bones in it. It's not that it's bad, but just not too memorable....and really expensive.....and you could die.
Kento Bento So not worth it???
Ugh 😰
Kento Bento love your videos
@@PassiveClapz maybe worth for the experience, but not for like date or something
KENTO BENTO!!! love your videos
Thank you for being our guinea pig Mike! I'm now officially no longer curious about trying fugu 😅
I feel like this is another food that isn't that good, its just popular for the novelty of having tried it.
alexkg1 you can just go to another resturant.
I like the fact that you give honest opinions instead of other shitty youtubers that fake their reactions
Cough cough mark wiens cough cough food ranger
Fugu eating video starts with "this is my last day in Japan"
Hi fugu man can I kis u
1:53 " I see some scallions in here" Shows bowl filled like 75% with scallions LOL
Sounds like it's popular because it tastes like danger.
EddyGurge was popular amoungst business men to show their loyalty and pop their testosterone
@@artistaloca4 So basically, just I did it. And lived.
@@jepolch hi joe its me eddie love you
Be grateful for these Trained Expert Chefs
finally some back story on Ms.Puffs husband
he a lamp now tho
😂
Seems like he's been on his "Last day in Japan" for the last 3-4 videos... Must have eaten A LOT that last day xD
Exactly what i was thinking XD
Alot can happen in one day.
Everywhere he went to in Osaka is in Dontobori
He breaks each meal and snack up into a seperate chapter.
I do that a lot on vacation, deciding at the last minute to stay a extra day, then the next day decide to stay a little more lol
So basically it's disgusting and it might poison you.
But he said it tastes good.
some parts taste good and others just make you go "????"
Actually, Mike says repeatedly that it doesn't have much flavour at all. He enjoyed the different textures but even after eating it seven different ways, he can't define what it tastes like.
Maybe the hot chili oil ruined his tastebuds, I've had fugu and it's true the sashimi and skin doesn't taste much more enjoyed for it's texture but the bones and the soup made from it has one of the most sweetest, cleanest and delicate flavours I've tasted in a broth made from just water and light boiling a few ingredients.
I like that while he remains polite, he's not afraid to say "I didn't care for this at all, and here's why." Some food vloggers are so fake, everything's just wonderful, and you know they must have preferences...and that not everything is perfect.
WHAT? NO HOT OIL? No wonder you really didnt like it.
I'm new, and I've been watching your videos 5hrs straight... Best channel ever
not sure if you know or not Mike, but most fugu is now farmed which means they're way way less poisonous than cyanide as they dont eat the algae that makes them poisonous in the first place
there are even poison less fugu
The farmed ones are poinsonless, but I think they are mostly used for supermarkt products. The chefs still use the poisonous fugu.
I think the only reason why fugu is consumed is because of its toxicity which gives them the feeling of riskiness/adventurousness eating it. Otherwise it tastes just as bland as any piece of other raw fish.
What's so adventurous about eating something that could possibly kill you? I think you mean bravery.
You actually felt something when you ate certain parts of the toxic
fish. The parts closer to the liver would numb out your mouth a bit.
best youtouber
... and the only 'youtouber' ever to exist.
H N Q he has to be the best cuz there is only one "youtouber"
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) youre funny!! lol
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
not only this you should watch or search for korean englishman good youtuber vlogger as well
i like how you actually review the food, and don't just say "it's good" like a lot of reviewers
I had fugu in a very expensive hotel in Yokohama, and it was bland and tough. it was on my food bucket list, and even though afterwards my tongue and lips felt a little tingly; it was a completely unremarkable experience and one I don't really care to repeat. give me some nice hamachi or uni over fugu anytime
justHaitham I think the fugu now is less poisoning am I correct?
Love this guy, found him from Beyond Science and seeing that he has this channel as well is awesome. Mike you are such a loveable person and watching you on your travels is really relaxing and opening my eyes to Japans amazing culture! I WANT TO GO TO JAPAN SO BAD NOW lol
AGAIN !! LOVE YOUR HONESTY!!
THANKS for taking me along in this journey ❤️
You explained each course very well! I still have no desire to try Fugu, but it was fun living vicariously through you :)
If I ever go to Japan I'm going to watch these videos again to eat all the amazing food you got to eat!
I've always wanted to try puffer fish but not that common in the US
Yep
Only tourists eat that fish in Japan. Especially since most fugu produced now in Japan contains little or no toxicity. The title of this video is a bit clickbait.
Ziggs they do??? I might try it
I'm not sure I'd trust it anywhere outside of Japan, haha
I swear I had fugu about 10 years back at a sushi place in NC. I distinctly remember them hyping it up, and a group of friends ate some sashimi that made our lips and tongue tingle. No idea what I had, but I can't imagine a fugu chef coming here. Special seasoning? lol
I love your straight forward approach.your videos amazing!!!
wow mikey chan im a huge fan of your beyond science channel and i didnt know you had more channels and its good to know... youre awesome man... keep up the good work... ive been watching beyond science for years but did not know about your other channels... make sure you shout out your other channels in every channel you have dude... trust me
I had tora-fugu tei(tiger blowfish) the full set twice in Yokosuka, loved it.
*coughs*
OMG DID I JUST GET POISONED
Just found your videos today. You've earned a new subscriber from Canada, cheers!
Dude I LOVE your videos. Your Japan tour is actually what got me hooked on your channel! Keep it up! c: I am always excited for what you have in store next for food to eat! I hope you keep doing this for years in the future!
I'll feed this to my ex
Merlot M ... why this fish ain't cheap
Merlot M my ex would be worth the expense.
Merlot M if you're planning to feed this fish to ex remember to feed her the liver
enrico reyes LOL
the loveable muslim weirdo but it kills :)
Dolphins have been observed chewing on puffer fish, then then passing them around to other dolphins. Apparently they use them to get high. Don't bogart that puffer fish!!
Lol the puffers are some blunts
Puffer puffer pass bro
Excellent review. I've always wondered what it tasted like. I appreciate your description of the texture. Thanks for sharing!
Love your Videos! family friendly and a joy to watch!
I had fugu sashimi in Osaka before and it tasted like a combination of squid and fish texture=) I love the taste especially when dipped in ponzu sauce. It is interesting to see how different ways of cooking fugu can have different texture!
How hungry were the first people to eat fugu? "Oh, it's deadly poison, it killed my pal--let's eat!"
Maybe some rich people back then?
This was a great trip. Thanks for sharing with us, Mike.
Mikey! You're so pleasant to watch. Keep on keeping on!
Did your lips tingle at all? A lot of people say they experience a little numbness or tingling after eating fugu.
Bobshouse Some chefs leave a little toxin for that if you request it they will but not all chefs do that.
I would have to agree with Reedah. I read that some chefs may opt to do this if requested. In the case of my non-Japanese-speaking self, the fugu did not cause any tingling.
(I imagine the last thing they want is a tourist freaking out because they think they are dying)
1:33 the menu actually says "none poisoning accident occurred here until now".
This is the Best ive seen on Strictly Dumpling, LOL throughout the whole video. Glad to see you're still alive.
I really like that you overcame your concerns and tried the raw ones! :)
to die for? lol
yay! I recently watched a documentary on fugu!
love your videos. keep the good work!
really enjoy watching these videos
tldr:
Fugu is overrated
This fish scares me!
i swear every single video of japanese dishes you have uploaded for the past week or two made me hungry and satisfied
Thank you mikey! im tired of this "food shows" just saying it is good/decent. You, you speak the truth you actually try to give a description on what you are eating. Im so glad i found you when i did XD
3:23 ''You gotte chew this sucker'' Wtf? xDD
Finaly a food that you didnt enjoy, loved those reactions!!
Interesting. Well I had no intention of ever trying fugu before. I was curious about the taste. It looks intriguing and now I am 100% next time in Tokyo going to try fugu at this very restaurant. Great video mike!
Woah! I'm going to Osaka in April, and I'm DEFINITELY testing this out! Great video!
That first cough though, you thought you were poisoned xD
I ate here!!! Loved the tempura fugu!
Fun to see your experience with this and I think you maybe are expressing a more honest reaction than I saw with Anthony Bourdain. If you haven't seen his experience with fugu check out A Cook's Tour S1 E2. It is the last bit of the show. He was also underwhelmed by the taste and decided it was more baddass points than culinary loveliness.
I love you and all of your videos! :D Big fan
so for those that say he says he likes everything, he clearly doesn't
You missed the Fugu Hire-zake (鰭酒- fin sake) which is hot sake into which a charcoal-broiled piece of puffer fish fin is soaked into. You obviously don't eat the fin. The sake is absolutely delicious and you tend to ask for refills, i.e. if you enjoy the peculiar smokey fragrance and taste. Definitely worth trying!!! :-)
BTW I live in Japan - heh heh :D
Yayy I've been waiting for your video :D
Enjoyed the vid!
Poison, poison, poison ahh tasty fish
From this video I feel like it's not worth trying. The majority of textures you described are ones I don't like. Thankyou for trying things for us :D
Wow, this is one of the rarest time I see an honest review/commentary. If he doesn't like something, he will come out and say it. He won't mince words or talk any kind of nonsense. Great
ily my fav youtuber keep it up
he's lowkey scared for real lol
As Homer Simpson Would Say! Fan Fugu Tastic!👍
Omg, I've eaten there before! It was absolutely amazing!!! Thank you for sharing your experience. It brought back so many great memories.
I love how honest you are. Trying a world famous delicacy that is near impossible to prepare, and you're still telling it like it is, and letting us know when it did not impress you.
"its my last day in Japan"
me: at least you got to go to japan
When are you testing the Japanese McDonald's
Enjoy your videos thanks man
Bro u are the best your videos are very intertaining
Not the poison aspect, but it just didn't seem...good. It was a 50/50 meal for Mike, who didn't even get full.
I love broccoli 😋😊
Hi I'm Glad you are still alive. I've never had Fugu but I probably would taste it if I would have a change to go to the right place. :)
Great video...thank you!
Also, broccoli is the only other vegetable, besides carrots, that I actually like
I'm not eating at a restaurant that I have to worry about weather or not I'm going to leave the restaurant alive.
The Ice cream looked good ! Thanks for the demo on the Fugu.
the most adventurous and the best food review channel on youtube.
So basically your telling us Fugu is gross, and it's poisonous for a reason. lol
Mike you should have been the new host to Man Vs Food.
Thanks for sharing!
Wow!! You're really brace to try something like that keep up the good work mikey
He said ball of snot and I dead ass thought he said ballsack.
It's good to see some good he doesn't like
Love your contents👍👍👍
I really enjoy your reactions to the food. LOL
taste like rubber band?
doesn't taste good they why risk life when there are hundreds of thousands of things to eat...
Love your channel. How can you afford these travels? And why aren't you on food network? Simply amazing.
In your last video, you told us you were going to try fugu, and then there was no video or updates from you for like 3 days! I got as concerned as someone would for a stranger halfway across the world. Glad you're alive! lol Death by fugu would suck.
I laughed when you mentioned you'd never ate raw fish before.. and you waited to try it with fugu of all the choices!! I hope you will try more raw fish in the future - I believe you would be a huge fan of fatty tuna's flavor!
thank you .. i will never eat fugu :D
My physiology professor in college introduced me to this concept and it was really interesting, so here I am now.
Your reviews are among my faves. This one convinced me to save my yen for a better beef experience. Thank you!!!!
"a little bit of the sauce" *proceed to soak it*
That really didn't look appetising. I don't think people would give it the light of day if there wasn't the novelty of dying horribly
I’ve always been against trying this but now I’m curious about trying it. Thank you for taking that fear away for me.
Omg listening to you explaining the texture and the taste of the raw fugu sashimi and seeing it, got me wondering...can you eat fugu in Japan at a sushi restaurant? I am asking because I have been to a sushi restaurant in Japan and ordered a nigiri menu without checking the items inside...and one of the items was this very chewy white fish that I couldn't guess xD
