Reciting Ruqyah means to recite the Qur'anic verses or the dhikr and prayers used by the Prophet - may God's peace and blessings be upon him - by placing the hand on the head of the patient or on the place of pain, or by reading and blowing on the patient. Ruqya is a word that means shelter, protection. The Prophet would perform ruqya for himself and others, and Gabriel and Aisha (may God be pleased with her) would perform ruqya for him, and the Companions (may God be pleased with them) would also perform ruqya. Almighty God says:
"We send down from the Qur'an verses of healing and mercy for the believers." (al-Isra, 82).
"Say: He is guidance and healing for those who believe." (Fussilat, 44).
"There has come to you a reminder from your Lord, a healing for what is in the hearts, guidance and mercy for the believers (Quran)!" (Yunus, 57).
Aisha narrates that: "When the Prophet fell ill, he recited the surahs that protect against evil (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas) and blew on himself. When his illness worsened, I recited them for him, hoping for the blessings of Allah Almighty. I would rub his hands on his body." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 5016).
In another narration, Aishabela said: "Every night when the Prophet lay down on his bed, he folded his hands together and blew into them, then recited Surahs "al-Ikhlas", "al-Falaq" and "an-Nas", and then, starting from the head and face, he would rub it all over his body as much as he could. So he would repeat it three times." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 5017).
Anas ibn Malik said: "The Prophet allowed a family from the Ansar to perform ruqya to treat the sting of a (poisonous animal) and earache." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 5719).
Umm Salama narrates that once the Prophet saw a girl whose face had changed color in her house and said: "Say ruqya to this girl, because she has an eye." (Sahih al-Bukhari, 5739).
Also, reciting Ruqya can prevent witchcraft, fear, temptation, etc. It is an indispensable method of treatment against spiritual diseases. For the treatment of this, the Messenger of God used from the Qur'an Surah al-Fatiha, the first 4 verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, verses 163-164 of Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayatul Kursi, the last 2 verses of Surah al-Baqarah, verse 18 of Surah Ali Imran, and 54 of Surah al-Araf. It is narrated that he recited the first 10 verses of Surah al-Saffat, the last 3 verses of Surah al-Hashr, the first 3 verses of Surah al-Jin, surahs al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and al-Nas and other verses. (Ibn Majah).
Ruqyah is permitted under three conditions.
First, ruqya should be with the words, names and attributes of Almighty God. Rugyan's words should not contain words against Sharia. It is forbidden to pray to anyone other than Almighty God, or to seek help from the jinn, or to recite polytheistic incantations. Almighty God says:
"Don't ask Allah for things that can neither benefit nor harm you. If you do that, you will certainly be one of the wrongdoers." (Yunus, 106).
Secondly, the words of the ruqya should be clear and the meaning understandable. It is forbidden to read spells whose meaning is not understood.
Thirdly, one who performs ruqya must firmly believe that ruqya itself has no effect. In fact, Ruqya cannot be effective without the power and will of Almighty God. Reciting Ruqyah is a reason, because it is only Allah Almighty who heals whomever He wills. All other types of ruqya and spells that do not include the above conditions are forbidden.
