The great contemporary singer Cecilia Bartoli said exactly the same in an interview. She added that today, we have more well- trained singers than ever, but that we do not have great artists any more. An intelligent and absolutely correct observation on today's operatic scene, I think.
The seeking for perfection destroys diversity. People are being trained in very similar methods all over the world. Unless we have some artist who has some sort of autodidacting in his learning, it's going to be difficult to turn this over.
Ursula Dietze Bartoli has a horribly underdeveloped voice and the singers are probably the worst trained than ever before, most probably in recorded history , as even the best of today are barely on par, with the 2nd rate singers of previous generations

It's still a mistery why was Bonisolli underrated during his lifetime. Another great tenor who was also underrated was Veriano Luchetti. Great voice, great talent, but by some misterious reason, just like Franco, never got the deserved praising.

This man was a true legend. He would have been one of the original famous 3 Tenor Italia 90 but was left out because his loose cannon attitude. What a loss . Imagine if it was the 4 Tenors.
What a wonderful, lyric voice. Why have I ever heard of him? He should be or should have been at the Met singing along with Luciano and the other tenors.
How could he sing this kind of repertory for lighter- voiced tenors with such a big voice? And then to sing it as excellently and beautifully as he did! Just marvelous! I think this tenor was underrated tremendously, pazzo or not pazzo. I rather have a "pazzo" (supposedly crazy) great tenor than a sane semi-tenor like so many are out there today and were there too during his time. And, besides, why the hell was he called Il Pazzo (The Crazy One)? He may have had an original, a bit eccentric personality, but crazy he certainly wasn't.
Contrary to what most people think, Bonisolli was NOT a dramatic tenor. He started as a lyric tenor with a relatively small voice. As years did pass by, his voice got bigger and bigger and he became a real spinto tenor capable of singing many different roles with great success. What can I say which has not already been said about Corelli ? Such vocal control, emotion and that ringing top note, some tenors avoid singing.We shall sadly never hear his like again.With justification, both vocally and physically known as 'The Prince of Tenors' R.I.P
