      I think an epic hunt is one where the birds are working the decoys beautifully, are almost landing in your lap and everyone is shooting well! Limits are always a bonus, but I just love it when they work it just right. I don't even need a gun to get excited about watching birds come in like that! 😁

      To be honest. Anymore, it’s when someone does not set up within 100 yards of us on the river. Last 5 times we went out, guys show up just before shoot time. Going to a new place tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed.

    I live in SE Ohio, simply we don't get alot of birds. We are missed by the Atlantic and Mississippi flyaway. Last weekend was probably my most epic hunt. I shot a solo limit of drake mallards and drake wood ducks in 20 minutes. It's been years since I took a full limit of birds.

    Good to see the dog is workin for you. I just bought those journals for me and a friend to help us as we try to learn the waterfowl game. Our very first entry was a river float that we flipped the canoe😂

    @Joel Strickland - love your channel, great content and great presentational style.
    I have heard you talk about motion in the decoy spread and how important it is, but I couldn't find a dedicated video about it? Specifically, decoys that move water around - what's best? I am not sold on vibration decoys, what do you think??

    Another great video Joel! I've recently discovered your channel and have been enjoying the library. Your videos are very informative for the absolute novice that I am. Unfortunately I haven't been duck hunting in 20ish years, but have many found memories of early mornings with my uncle and father. The reason for my post though is in regards to the Greatest Mystery of Duck Hunting. Just a thought, but I wonder if the popularity of the Texas style rigging in fishing could have influenced the invention of the Texas rigging system for decoys? While the weight does slide up and down the line unimpeded in the fishing technique, to me the premise seems to be the same; a sliding weight. According to Google at least, the Texas rigging style for fishing was popularized in the early 60's, so I could imagine someone modifying it to work with decoys shorty thereafter. And with this in mind, maybe it wasn't invented in Texas at all? Someone simply used the same name for the rigging system because it resembled the fishing technique. And you know the saying, "not all fisherman hunt, but most hunters fish". Anyway, just a thought. God bless!

    What’s the etiquette on dispatching a bird when you retrieve it? I see so many videos where hunters carry their kill (or the dog is) and the bird is clearly alive and moving. Just trying to learn hear. Thank you.

    • @SurvivingDuckSeason
      @SurvivingDuckSeason  Před 2 lety +2

      Death isn’t always immediate.... and just because it’s twitching, doesn’t mean it’s alive. I always check the bird to see if it’s alive and dispatch pretty quickly. We don’t show that part on video because it violates certain guidelines on CZcams. Regardless of etiquette or CZcams rules, the law states that you are to make a reasonable effort to retrieve/kill wounded game and immediately add to you bag.

    Hey Joel I’m new to duck calling and I’ve recently noticed that I have a problem with humming into my call. Not really a grunt but more like a hum especially when I do a cadence call it sounds like this vibrating mess lol and I cannot figure how to stop doing it do you or anyone else have any tips for how I can overcome this and is anyone else having this problem?

    15 guns opening up on a pair of geese or ducks isn't shooting a limit. It's party hunting and party blind bag shooting.
    Jo3l, you should know the difference.
    I suppose ya got a good tip, tho.
