Drone Footage of a Great White Shark Sleeping? It's Possible.

  • In this week's video, I capture a white shark in a behavior that could possibly show the shark sleeping. One of the theories currently being investigated regards the patterns juvenile white sharks make in the shallows of Southern California. It is an interesting theory that will need much study, but it could explain the patterns I've filmed consistently.
    I also film some of the closest and most detailed slow motion shots of white sharks off our coast to date. One actually appears to spy hop.

    QUICK NOTE on this VIDEO: The footage of the shark making the circles near the paddleboarder is the NOT the same shark that was in pursuit. I simply made a mistake in my script and placed the narration with the wrong clip. However, BOTH sharks are behaving differently. Both clips were filmed just minutes between each other. I just placed in the wrong clip with the wrong narration within the video. A simple editing mistake. The "POSSIBLE" sleeping patterns, however, are still very much food for thought.

      Your obvious love for these sharks shines through like a bright light. I have loved these sharks since I was a young boy, they scared the crap out of me at times but I think that was more my fault than theirs. Yes Great Whites have been responsible for some deaths, but the Bull shark, Tiger shark, and a white tip reef shark are the main killers in most of the attacks. I kinda wish I could swim with a GW, but still lack the courage. Keep these videos coming , stay Covid free. Cheers from the land of kangaroos and wallabies, plus our big, big Great Whites.

      Just in case you didn't see my comments. maybe you'll see them here, the redness in the sky at Sunset and sunup is lithium and lithium is the reason why these sharks are not aggressive, and the people don't give a shit either. it's being sprayed on everybody daily across the planet lithium and other chemicals but lithium is one of them it's right there in your pretty sunset picture. And as you can see their spraying a lot of it. look how red that Sunset is you don't believe me research it lithium makes the sky red during sunsets. I've lived on this planet for 62 years and I've never seen a sunset that red.

    In answer to your question about why sharks behave differently, perhaps it's because they have slightly different "sharkonalities"; some are more timid, others, risk-takers, but they probably all get together later and compare notes in a supernatural collective unconscious way while dreaming ; ) Nature has so much amazing wisdom and intelligence on so many micro and macro-levels it really does seem supernatural at times!

  • @dwaneanderson8039
    @dwaneanderson8039 Před 2 lety +10

    In the case of the shark that followed the paddleboarder, it could be that the shark found him interesting because he was reacting directly to the presence of the shark. It was an actual interaction. By contrast, the other paddleboarder went right on by the other shark without reacting to it at all. That may have made it less interesting to the shark.

  • @danepatterson8107
    @danepatterson8107 Před 2 lety +27

    Wonderous episode! My hypothesis is that SoCal is a 'learning habitat' for pre-pubescent sharks. Swimming in circles reminds me of aquatic mammals that 'sleep' with half the brain at a time. Do sharks have hemispherical brains? Swimming in circles in known-safe waters seems like a good sleep environment, right? As long as these young sharks have adequate natural prey, this fantastic learning habitat can include human beings, too!

I noticed you mentioned seeing less sharks as winter months approach but here in NC where I live it's actually the opposite, this is the time of the year our beaches have the most GW action as they travel from up North down South to warmer waters. I use the Ocearch app to follow some incredible great whites that have been tagged and return to NC coast year after year. I love tracking how far these majestic creatures travel from one season to the next 💙💙💙

The one where the one individual sharks pursued the board while the other didn’t it’s because each sharks has it’s own personality just like humans do. Great video! It is possible that the shark is sleeping. Dolphins are also known to swim in circles due to a phenomenon called unihemispheric sleep, where one brain hemisphere goes to sleep while the other hemisphere maintains some level of activity. As a result the one hemisphere active will mean that the opposite side muscles for swimming are still active ie right side active will results in swimming can circles to the left (anti-clockwise). Don’t know much about sleep in sharks but maybe they also have unihemispheric sleep?

    In South Australia we have white sharks. The city of Adelaide is in a gulf and there is an annual migration of snapper (great eating fish) that the sharks follow. Unfortunately there have been quite a few lethal encounters with these sharks. These sharks are usually over 4 meters in length and have been seen to be over 5 meters! I've surfed around South Australia for over 40 years and have never seen one. Now I know why. The original Jaws live footage was filmed in these waters.
