You are likely to be eaten by a Grue in Minecraft with out light or at least in this mod showcase For 1.12.2. THE GRUE MOD ads the Grue from Zork to Minecraft. It is a survival mechanic which makes the dark dangerous. Adding a mob that can't stand the light. So grab a torch, delve into the deep and enjoy the showcase!

been a while since I was on, (and been on the server) but this mod looks great, I recently (i.e. few months ago) played zork 2 (through a discord bot) on a private server I made purely for that, kinda like this in minecraft it adds that level of hardness (without going to hardcore mode cause... I dont want my lovely world to be gone forever (still have some worlds I played on from 2012- or on version 1.5.2 that I evenually upgraded to the newest version!
have you tried the mod Dynamic Lighting(or Dynamic Lights) witchever called) if you just throw a torch on the ground, it'll give off light, and could work with the realistic torches I think too- it effects torches, glowstone, fire, pumpkins and redstone (think lava too)

i personally think the hardcore darkness mod would be amazinf with this, game turns into horror already, now with the grue its even worse
