Wow great stuff. Covert has all the good stuff and none of the fluff and at great prices. US anyway, not sure about shipping elsewhere. It’s great when someone in the picking community can start a company that can be competitive and have great quality. Great video as always.

It looks really well-made. For learning and practice use, for right-handed pickers who like to lift the pins UP, it would be better if the other side of the lock was cut away so it would be more easily viewed while picking.
Holding it in hand, you sort of block it either way. I prefer this way round myself
as someone who has one it, its best on that side. It forces you to have to stop and look at what state a pin is in, so you have to consciously stop what your doing an check versus seeing as you're picking. This helped me phenomenally with the 1100s after wards
Actually only good for visual aid. The pins will not act right in a chamber that is cut away. But again, it will help give you a basic understanding as to how a lock works "visually".

I've been trying to pick one of these a few minutes a day for about a week now with NO success! But i am also fairly new to picking! (Just a couple of months now) but I've been trying my luck picking every lock i can get my hands on, and usually (depending on the maker/model of the lock..) I can get them open within 15 minutes or so! NOT THE CASE WITH MY AMERICAN 1105! So in a way, I'm glad to see it's actually a tricky lock to open with lots of security pins in it, and not just my lack of skills! I now feel a little better being that I'm quite a NOOB myself! Lol! Thank you for (all of) your very informative/descriptive videos sir!

Good luck, took me a few weeks to get my first open, then nothing for a month. Back at it and had a few more opens, they are really fun locks, just crank up that tension (they open without you realizing it).

I've wanted a mad bob's curved tension wrench for quite a while now. I have the covert companion but the bibs looks really nice.
I recently bought the CI ABUS disk detainer cut away, it's very nice.
I have 2 of these, one for me and the other was given as a gift to a newcomer into LockSport. I do wish it was milled on the opposite side for right handed pickers.
I had gotten this to help me understand the feedback and to help me pick the ones I own. these are a big hurdle of mine, since I have only been lucky to pick a couple 1105s that I passed onto others.
I also admit, just a little more milling on the plug would actually be better for me to see the sheer line because of my stigmatism. I do agree these are well priced and for those right handed can always set a mirror on the machines side 😁😁😁

@@LockNoob I actually emailed and unfortunately that's the only way it will come. Basically a good sales model for American Lock, and would be a shame to machine that badge. Seems a mirror on the other side is the only answer for now, but who knows, they may give the other direction a go👍👍👍
I saw them when the first came out, and at the time hadn't tried picking 1100's but I loved the look. I have 3 1000's now, several opens, but now that cutaway looks very appealing to me, definitely would use it as a display piece, but agree they should show the key pins, that would look much nicer and give you a better idea of what you are dealing with. That being said, I would drop that core, gut it and polish it up to a mirror like finish, I like shiny things too :)

I’m quite new to lock picking, and while I love your idea of cutting more away to see the driver pins, it seems to me that with all the other cutaway sections above the driver pins, wouldn’t pins start to fall out? If that is a stupid question, just feel free to ignore it. Love your channel, and I am learning a lot from it. Thank you.

That's some very nice machinework, especially the edge bevel detail. I'd say the initial US price is a fair deal but sad that this won't apply to most other people. Personally I can't afford it either but it's nice to see anyway- Thanks!

For sure it looks really nice and it makes a lovely display piece. Obviously you'll pay more for a cut away but what's the price difference for the same lock without mods?
I think ther American 1100 and the Abus Brady fell similar to pick, just my opinion.
Personally prefer the AL1100 but enjoy the Brady too
This is a beautiful lock I’m brand new in the lock sport I wish I was able to buy one of these but times are hard for me right now hopefully one day I can get one
@Lock Noob - Given that most pickers pick right-handed, and that most non-European pickers pick with the driver pins UP, this is milled on the wrong side. The cutaway is facing away from the picker when the lock is in the vice or in hand in the "normal" picking position. Wonder why they did that?

How was the customs charges when you finally got this and was it a long ship time??
Ship time was ok but customs charges were brutal as usual as I had other stuff bought!

A hand operated mill maybe, otherwise it would be hard

Have managed to get some items without customs charging extra - but if it is heavy they seem to be interested

Nicely made, but too rich for me for actual practice. Actual practice? Sparrows stuff does the job pretty well for a lot less money, so I completely agree with you. A nice piece of art work though, maybe a gift?
How does this compare with the Sparrow’s cutaway practice locks?
@@leonardhatcher3272 well, it is a bit more difficult, but with the pinning kits sparrows offers, you can make the spawwiws pretty challanging.
I really want this and i bought at covert a few days ago, but as german its too expensive to import :( +19% VAT + nearly 20€ for handling by DHL for customs, than a few € just for customs and at least postage 15 Dollar. So the lock cost me 120 € or so.... thanks to M erkel ruin germany...

Thanks Ash. 🙂👍 It is very interesting and useful demonstration piece indeed. The price is right, but by the time the lock has arrived in Britain, you can almost double it, because of post and packing, insurance, import duty, VAT and the double surcharge imposed by the Post Office. The first question to ask is therefore, 'Can i justify paying over £100 for what will become a display piece, after I learn how to pick the lock?' For me, with limited funds, and not very proficient picking skills yet, the answer is 'No.' So I'll pass, on this one.
Another question is 'How closely does the cutaway lock resemble the feel of a standard '1100 when picking it?' Many cutaway locks barely resemble the feel of a real-life lock.

Hey Ash. Here's my 1 concern, American locks have the Date made stamped on them. And while that one ends in K. It was made in a year that ended with 4. But the front of the code is "Jibberish" as they Don't have a letter A. & has Nothing to do with it being cutaway. Would you be able to explain that by chance?

I would rather have the 6 pin lock ( if there is one ) , and you have a great idea ( which i seriouly hope they implement ) in showing the key pins in their resting state . I think the cost is a bit high especially as they mass produce them , you can buy an 1100 for $20 , so a CNC router can cut them 2 cutaway sections in 2 minutes tops , $50 would be a fair price

I have to disagree with you about the price.
I find everything covert instruments offer to be way overpriced.
I don’t think it’s cheap per se, but other cutaways I’ve seen for AL1100z have been over £100, though tbh those were small batch productions
Why don't you just say what the things are? I see you review a lot of things but ALWAYS say positive things about them. I get that companies would feel better for sending you their stuff but it seems not at all impartial.
This lock is expensive for most people (considering the price of the original).
Most things you have reviewed have had criticisms but you never say them? Why?
I like your videos as you relay a lot of useful information and I take a lot of what you say as advice but you should be a little more critical (unless everything you have ever received is perfect).
Well this is as independent a review as it gets. I paid for it myself. I mention it’s not cheap, but it’s in line with other cutaway American Locks I’ve seen (and cheaper than custom one off ones people sometimes make). I also mention it would be better if there were milled chambers in the plug. Other than that… I’m not sure what criticisms I could have about it. It’s a cutaway American lock for a fair price. Also worth mentioning that most things made by the top manufacturers are actually very good, and most of the criticisms people have are down to preference rather than anything else. Where I really think there might be something worth warning people off, I tend to buy them myself (see the Grimm tools reviews I’ve done for example). I know a lot of people would like me to take sides with manufacturers and call things junk, but that’s not me. If people have alternative opinions (as long as they are not rude) I also leave the comments up for others to read - after all, no one should listen to just one opinion for anything in life.
@@LockNoob but its not cheap compared to other locks. it is expensive compared to other locks (especially American locks). Even the one offs are cheaper than these ones just because the LPL made them. Is he in it for the money or the Locks? The milled chambers are a bonus, i agree but shouldn't be priced like this.
i appreciate you buying things based off of what you see but you should, in spite of you buying it, give a proper review of the item. you do a good reviews but you rarely ever give an honest review and say the negatives - you do give sometimes a negative review but you do this very rarely.
We don't want you to take sides just an honest review of things that you seem to get. It doesn't matter if its not you, you are reviewing something so being nice should be out of the question.
Your reviews are good i like them but be a little more honest/brutal with them.
