Like Michael said, we do this to cope. He is from Lake Charle's nearby neighbor Orange, TX. I grew up down the coast around Freeport and Corpus Christi. One of my earliest remembrances is of a hurricane in 1945 and the first time we boarded the windows and used candles afterwards for light. Shinyribs also talks about Rita, a hurricane near the same path as Laura, in 2005. In that storm we were not allowed to evacuate perpendicular to the path of the storm but were required to drive straight down path into Houston which was in total traffic gridlock. And it was 104 ° on the streets . I came close to dying when my truck overheated and I had to turn on the cab heater to keep it from boiling out all the water. Initial ground zero was near me 150 miles west of the land fall. We cope. We try to find something to keep us on a less morbid side of things while trying to stay realistic.
I live in and love Lake Charles...and this is the hardest I've laughed in week. I wait tables at a very popular seafood restaurant off I-10 (SBB) across the bridge from the casino he mentions, and we have an entire section of a wall covered with slot tickets for less than $1 left as "tips" by patrons who have crapped out at the casinos...
I love the shoutout to John Aielli!! I spent many a caffeine-soaked morning tuning in to eklektikos for john’s dead pan non-sequiturs and rib-splitting segues. RIP John Aielli
Shinyribs still rock the planet. They blew the roof off the Paramount last week in Austin to celebrate the debut of their new album "Transit Damage" It's epic!
Just recently discovered them but damn are they amazing. I found the Gourds and Kevin a few months ago but wasn’t a huge fan. I discovered Shinyribs recently and they’ve quickly become one of my favorites. Maybe I need to check out the Gourds again!
Michael Berry played the sequel to this. With "Take me out of Lake Charles". He had a hundred dollars and, " it can be your 'own', if you can get my ass gone". Refrain: Take me out Lake Charles, Take me out of Lake Charles, (repeat).
Saw you for the first time on Austin City Limits Saturday night. Am a fan for life now! Entertaining, provocotive, and the music is fantastic! Come to Georgia. We'll treat you well here. I was so impressed when you shhook everyone's hand as they got off stage. I used to live with a professional musician and they love recognition as such. Thank you for your talent.
Those are the Best songs. The True ones. Great song
Kevin Russell is doing exactly what he was put on this earth to do. That makes me happy
+Emzy King truer words were never spoken.

Best live show in the country. Kevin Russel is solid fun and entertainment.
If you're able to catch them live,.....you are a lucky man.
