I don't think it's a bad or even average episode. But it's a very different one. It's a love story between two soldiers that lost everything else. It's not the normal, evil twist plot that we see, and that might make it feel weird. But it's still amazing, and the acting is pure perfection.

    • @johnrussellpelt9091

Excellent mostly mute performances by Bronson and Montgomery.
I like that the female character is more combative and the male more diplomatic. It's a great reversal of expected gender roles and if you consider her character it makes perfect sense. She is a female soldier in what is more than likely enemy territory (the signs are in English so they're in his world.) So she quite likely has been raped or been assaulted by enemy male soldiers (Also the fact that she reacts to the posters of male soldiers seems to trigger PTSD ) or told that they would. So she is constantly on the defensive.

I don‘t think there‘s any “ah, you can skip this episode“ for any classic series, be it Star Trek, Twilight Zone or whatever. Take the bad and mediocre ones with the good and the best, to really be able to judge the whole thing.

    • @katherinegilks3880

I disagree. There are only so many hours in a days and days in a life. One shouldn’t be forced to waste any time of that life just for the sake of completeness, especially in an anthology series. If one’s goal is completeness or rigourous academic study, of course no skipping. If one’s goal is to expand one’s horizons, have a nostalgia trip, or just watch something fun on a Friday night, skipping is perfectly fine - especially in old shows where values dissonance can ruin someone’s enjoyment of an otherwise good show. It doesn’t make anyone less of a fan or unable to truly appreciate the show overall.

If it's 1 y (prekrasny) it means wonderful, and one of my cousins has a shooting script from this episode (it's one of their most prized possessions; it's in more of a place of honor than family photos) with the single-y spelling when she says it and the double y when he says it. No idea if that's just a typo, but an interesting bit of trivia.

The actors sold the prime conflict of the episode. Their past, where they were conditioned to hate the other side and shoot on sight, against their humanity and desperation for human contact. Could one be put aside for the other? The man does so earlier, the woman struggles with it more. The recruitment station scene brilliantly reinforce that. Remember, it is the woman who is the invader, stuck on enemy soil. That would be harder then struggling on home turf, so to speak.

    • @katherinegilks3880
      @katherinegilks3880 Před rokem

We only have his word that she is an invader. They could actually be two different ethnic groups from the same territory, where “invader” is more of a slur than a historic reality. She could have been fighting to get her home back, with the recruiters calling her people “vermin” who need to be stamped out to make way for a “better, civilised society”. The posters reminded her that his nice gesture of giving her the dress was potentially just a precursor to rape. (As in, he wanted her to look nice before he raped and killed her.) Besides, if there are only two people left in the general area, does it matter who is invader and who is invaded? Not to mention that if the area is supposed to be the US, both of them are invaders (desert regions of the former USSR too, for that matter).

Near the beginning of the story, the music composed was later reused as the theme music for the CBS Radio Mystery Theater, an anthology series hosted by E.G. Marshall in the 1970s. This was a fine way to start season 3. "Two" is something different, something not seen in the Twilight Zone yet: a love story. I'm so not counting "The Chaser" or "A World of His Own," those are warped stories of obsession. This is the question of if love can conquer hate, and it's well done. I agree that Elizabeth Montgomery edges out Charles Bronson as the standout. I like the dilemma that plays in her head. Yes, the two of them may be the only two people left, but can she overcome the intense hatred she probably feels for this man who represents the nation that wiped hers and the rest of the planet out? I like that it's a struggle; those feelings don't just go away.
I think I like this more than "The Invaders," in a way it's more streamlined. And while I thought that one was tense, it was also goofy with its tiny robot men. This is straight drama from start to finish. The lack of dialogue for most of it really lets the scenery speak, it's perfectly moody. Definitely an episode I can get behind.

"Hell in the Pacific", "Enemy Mine"
Two films that told the same story: former enemies learning to trust each other despite language barriers.

As mentioned, the entire main cast of “Bewitched” was on “The Twilight Zone” prior to that show.
    Elizabeth Montgomery (Samantha) > “Two”
Dick York (Darrin) > “The Purple Testament” and “A Penny For Your Thoughts”
Agnes Moorehead (Endora) > “The Invaders”
David White (Larry Tate) > “A World of Difference” and “I Sing the Body Electric”
Some of the less regular cast members were also on both shows:
Alice Pearce (Gladys Kravitz #1) > “Static”
Sandra Gould (Gladys Kravitz #2) > “What’s in the Box” and “Cavendar is Coming”
Robert F. Simon (Frank Stephens #1) > “No Time Like the Past”
Roy Roberts (Frank Stephens #2) > “A Kind of Stopwatch”
    Plus some more minor characters.
Montgomery, York, Moorehead, and Pearce would all get Emmy nominations for “Bewitched” with Pearce winning posthumously. In season 5’s “It’s So Nice to Have a Spouse Around the House,” after a witch sends Samantha back to the Old South, Darrin says his wife is “in the Twilight Zone.” Well, they ALL were!

5:29 she says "beautiful" "прекрасный" in masculine form. That form is incorrent if she refers it for dress(neutral gender)

"This is the first day of the sixth year, as Man used to measure time" ... well, that's basically the same time on Earth whether 100 years in the future or two million years in the past.
It was an okay episode, but weakened by some aspects that were written but not fully thought out. Like how they fight till one is unconscious over 6+ year canned chicken legs, but neither seems to fully use the food or pry cabinets open that could contain better resources, and you have fresh pigeon right there that a soldier could no doubt kill and cook. I did appreciate that the newspaper had no date on it, which which would not have been easily checked when it originally aired.

I think the optimistic endings are part of why the twilight zone is so good. going into each episode you genuinely don't know if it will end good or bad.

As for Bronson: Besides Death Wish. I recall him in The Big Valley and The Magnificent Seven.
Also some Japanese Comercial advertising MANDOM COLOGNE. I wonder if that had significant role in Manga

Twilight zone is television that looks like Theater done right. How did they do that without a Billion Dollars? Talent and intelligence and real life experiences which are all lacking in the writers repertoires today.

*It is ironic that Elizabeth Montgomery was supposed to be the Russian, speaking the one word "Прекрасный" (beautiful), while Charles Bronson was fluent in several languages--including Russian.*

Love Two, it’s like the scorpion and the frog but real, the species will die unless we give up our old dogmatic hatred’s. But despite how obvious that seems people are not always creatures of logic.

The one thing I've always liked about Twilight Zone is the variety of endings each episode had. Most of the time the episodes ends on a dark & tragic note, but other times the endinfsnare bittersweet & ambiguous (such as this one). On some occasions the episodes even had good endings.

I haven't found any comments about this, so as a Russian speaking person, I will say that "prekrasniy" does indeed mean "pretty" in Russian. 👍 Though, the accent that the actress used for that word was very American.

Post apocalyptic Adam and Eve was a science fiction cliche of the 50s and 60s, and to jaded modern audiences it's a bit cheesy. But this was a particularly well done example.
