The "client" in the last ad was not even remotely a douchebag. Yeah, he had no clue how much recording a 4 song EP actually costs, but he was courteous and nice about not knowing. Asking someone for contact information is not spitting in their face. Especially if the person you're asking just referred you to them.

Yup! Until i find a band or artist that i like more than my music I'll chase them down and do a song for free lol. Until then, I'll be over here getting better at the craft. The two metal head producers I've worked with were always paid before we even walked in the studio. Granted, I live in Shreveport LA so there rrally wasn't that many options when i was coming up. Actually, the second metalhead producer bought the first metalhead producer's equipment, so we were using the same board. I wrote the songs and also did all the vocals. I spent so much time in those studios, and that's where i learned how much work goes into production. We had some solid hangs and got some great songs out of it. It isn't as fun doing everything myself!

I'm not an engineer but I once had a guy come to me about starting a band saying he wanted to play rhythm guitar and sing so we could record 16 "songs" he had written, he could barely play basic chords, couldn't sing worth a shit and above all that he wanted me to put together this huge band to back him up including but not limited to: 2 guitarists, a drummer, a female vocalist, a violinist, bassist(me), a keyboardist, and a fucking DJ.

    • @chuckcostello5167
      @chuckcostello5167 Před 9 lety +1

John Smith I recently had someone do this to me wanting to hire a guitar player to record songs for him. He told me he wasn't a guitar player (which is fine) but that he had his ideas about what the guitar should be doing. So I told him, send me what you've got played out on whatever instrument you play and I'll tell you if it's doable for me to record it. Turns out the guy had NOTHING and wanted a guitar player to WRITE and TRACK all of his "songs" for him, while receiving "good compensation" for what he was only advertising as needing just a guitar player. I told him to kick rocks, I wasn't going to write AND play MY parts for his "songs" and that maybe he should re-word his advertisement as it was severely mis-leading.

Chuck Costello This. This was the reason I had to stop playing with an old buddy of mine. He would constantly tell me we needed to start a band, which I was all for, but when It came time to do the work I was the one loaded with the creative process. It eventually reached a point where he would occasionally show up to practice and ask what he was supposed to sing. I felt so bad because he was a really good guy and I wanted him to have a creative input but he simply brought nothing to the table and nobody in the band had the heart to kick him since we were all good friends.

  • @Gigatless

    Just my 5 cents.
I fucking _love_ this generation of musicians. They are so teased by all the successful bands that they think they've got a chance too. People simply don't consider a time factor:
    1. People don't buy music as good as they used to, so labels don't make as much money as back in the days.
    2. There are a shitload of patterns in any genre already, so it's hard to impress listeners with your deep feelings/bad romance bullshit even if your sound is great.
    3. There are so many musicians these days that it's not special anymore to be a flawless instrumentalist. Just open youtube and throw away your recently purchased electric guitar.
    4. These kids don't understand that back then the musicians didn't have a lot of role models and they were honest about the things they do, it was a challenge and they had to rediscover the genre over and over to be on the top. For some of them doing music was something they weren't sure about. I've read a lot of articles about musician families, and how their parents wanted them to be managers, doctors, businessmen. They fought their way through with their talent and an amazing amount of luck.
And just look at these fucking kids. They act are like they are rockstars already. Jeesh.

That's a very pessimistic way to look at things and while you're not wrong about a lot of what you said, discouraging people from the arts is a really shitty thing to do. Im certainly not inspiring kids, who went into music because they wanted to get laid more in their lives. If you really love making music, there's nothing that could make you quit it. I personally tried to quit like 20 times already, because I had no time, I needed to focus on more important things, it was an obsticle for relationships, sitting for hours and recording stuff had a bad influence on my health, etc etc. When I went to army and I thought that Im never going to write any nice melody after such a rough life. Came back and became better than ever. You either have it or you don't. The person who has it won't be discouraged by my words, because there's nothing I can say to tear it away from him.

  • @daltonkaetterhenry3753

I'd like to thank you. I joined a band with some buddies in high school and got put on the bass. Now, instead of being butthurt about playing an instrument that I didn't feel comfortable with, I decided I wanted to be the best bassist around. So I went to see a couple local bands and paid special attention to the bassist. Not only did I want to be like them, I wanted to surpass them. Around 3 months ago, my band was hitting a rough patch and everyone was getting pissy with me because they felt the bass wasn't important. That's when I came across your "How to not Completely Suck on Bass" video. It brought new light to me and my band mates. Ever since then, my band has been relying on me to make sure everything is going smoothly. So again, I'd like to thank you for sparking my love of music and my camaraderie between my band back up again.

I recorded a 4-song demo for a horrible 3-piece one time, and the guitarist insisted on tracking with his Line 6 spider 15 combo amp. On top of that, he refused to play to a click. He said it makes the music sound "mechanical," and literally described himself as a "non-conformist." He wasn't a terrible guitarist, but he had absolutely no concept of tone, and was a total diva. The vocalist was a real piece of work too. He had absolutely no idea how to properly use his voice, and had to take several hours-long breaks between songs, and even in the middle of one song, to rest his voice, because he was literally destroying it with the awful screaming he was doing. The drummer was the only one who actually had some concept of what was going on, and it was really a pleasure to work with him. After guitars, vocals, and drums were tracked, they asked me to lay down bass guitar tracks, because they'd seen me play bass in the band that I was in at that time. The tempo of all the songs was all over the place, and I couldn't figure out anything to do with any of the songs. It's a wonder that the drummer could play along with them at all. The songs still turned out okay, and apparently the band was approached by some local label for a record deal. I don't know if they ever got the deal, and I don't care. I wouldn't wish their band upon any recording engineer, ever.

Had one a couple of weeks ago that came to me (an engineer) with an out of tune acoustic guitar and sloppy out of tune vocals. She wanted all other instruments WRITTEN for her plus recorded, mixed and mastered for a mere 60 quid. Because I was absolutely skint at the time, I took the job but wanted £100 from her as she was clearly no millionaire and also I'm nice. Oh and there was a time limit of around 4 days for all this to be finished. And as another side note, she had no idea how to play to a click track, so all these virtual instruments I had to do for her were tediously positioned in her version of time. So basically I have to turn shit into gold with a time limit of 4 days.
So I did everything, wrote, recorded, mixed and mastered all 4 tracks for her, even kept her up to date throughout with sound clips, screen shots, the lot. When it came time to hand over the money (through skype) she didn't trust me to give her the product (via Dropbox) I'd been tirelessly working on for days. She wanted her songs first before she paid me and also wanted to give me £80 instead of the agreed £100. I must have spent about 2-3 hours from about midnight to 3am convincing her to send me the full amount of money before she FINALLY did it.
Safe to say I won't be working with her again. Fucking "musicians."

Back in 1988, I was the engineer and in-house studio musician at a 24 track analog studio in NYC. One day a guy named Mike (a big guy who looked like he belonged to a certain Italian-American subculture,,,) bought some studio time to executive produce a kiddie-pop singer I'll call Cindy. He hired a very talented keyboardist I'll call Dave to produce a single. Cindy was a very pretty young woman.
The plan was to record basic rhythm tracks, a scratch vocal track, and a rough mix. The next stages would be done later. Mike left, and Dave did the tracks. He nailed everything perfectly. Very professional. Cindy's vocals were competent, but unremarkable. Then we did a rough mix, which I recorded to cassette (hey; this was 1988).
Mike returned to check on our progress. We had actually achieved the objectives of the session. We played the mix from the multitrack. Mike said "Well, it sounds OK, but I think we can do better." So, he starts playing with the faders and EQ on the console. Meters are slamming into the red, tracks are distorting, nothing is making sense. He said "Alright, it sounds a little better. But it's not really what I wanted."
So, with a wink to Dave, I said "Hey Mike; give this a listen." I played the cassette of the exact same mix he wasn't happy with. He said "That's what it should have been the first time!"
At least he paid his bills.

I do completely understand why you get annoyed by these texts, you are just trying to make a living and any band who have been around long enough should understand that. Although I am a bit worried that some people who are only starting out are getting scared away from trying to record.
Obviously recording isn't easy, it takes a lot of practice and time, as well dedication and that's before you even get into the studio. When I recorded my album I was definitely not where I should have been practice wise but I've learned from that mistake, sometimes you need to face these things to fully understand how much work it takes.
I think personally people starting out should start off trying to record their own demos at home, if you want something just to get an idea of what you want to do. It's not that difficult or expensive and these people starting off can maybe begin to understand the amount of work engineers/producers do.
I know this was a long comment but it's just something I wanted to add. I want to say as well I love your videos they are both informative and amusing.

It definitely takes money to get everything in order and have a good engineer help you work on your recordings. I would never even think of getting in the studio without having a plan and goal in mind, not everything goes as planned so you always have to expect the unexpected. Good video and thank you.

As a mixer myself, I'm also a musician and have plenty experiences in some other parts of the business - so the sad thing is: I can understand you all. Because the biggest issue is the lack of a cashflow in the whole business. You always find people who exchange services or be willing to do you a favor by hoping you return it someday - but no one can pay the other to make a living. The music business is no business anymore. It's amateur hobby shit. I'm sorry to say that, but it is how it is. Try to make your money with something else to avoid more trouble in your life. I've heard the gaming business is a good place for former music folks.

I discovered that I not only love being a live player and was actually better than I thought I was, I found out the engineer can get me and my co-producer get what is needed. What is needed is different for different projects, markets, end format, time constraints etc. It helped me become better at producing my acts demos. I produced and let the engineer engineer with suggestions from me about the 'sound' I wanted. I'd say, " let's try using an RE20 on the guitar" or "I'm going for a fifties vibe, lets not close MIc the drum". Thing like that

I remember paying $350 for a 3 song demo back in the early 90's, and that was on the cheap end and it sounded like too. You had about 8 hours to track everything and get it mixed. That means when it was your turn to track, you had to have your shit tight, with maybe one or two punch-in's over-all to fix a fizzled note. It blows my mind that there are people out there now, still asking for a fully tracked and mixed song for under $100. Even more disturbing, they don't even have their music finished, let alone have it tight. Back then, any serious demo we would had off to an A&R guy costs the band thousands.
