The designs are just basic compared to what we have seen in the past. I've only seen a few episodes but the writing is meh. The show leans more towards shippers and shipping culture than for comic book fans. The "will they, won't they?" Aspect of comics are typically secondary if not tertiary to plots, but with recent shows it feels like they become the center focus because of the targeted audience. But let me ask, who is this for?
We can compare this show to the last recent DC show Young Justice. Compare how they handled everything. Which one seems to respect the canon and universe more?

Deathstroke isn't a threat because he has a super power suit with beam firing ninja swords he's dangerous because he's a highly trained assassin and master tactician.
This is why he's often pitted against Batman as the two have a lot in common in both how they fight and their relative power levels.

Though im not really watching or caring about the show, its pretty obvious the writers are trying todo this retarded case of trying to make the characters `vastly different` from thar original versions, yet trying to also bank on the nostalgia yet also clearly have no fking idea why said characters are iconic.
Its pretty easy to tell it feels like one of those diversity cards being flaunted by making it seem like any of the characters can be interchange`able in the power sets so they could probably later pull crap like Villian X can have its tools taken by Bystander A so they can get some cool moment to help Hero 1.
Probably the only thing i can vaguely give props to it is Task force, whatever they are calling this one does not have to consist solely of the typical iconic characters for what should be `suicide missions`, but since i dont even care to check if Amanda Waller in this show actually put bomb injections in all the `villian characters heads`, but clearly none of it is present with them being handed out such kind of tech and them able to just walk around like civilians, its clearly its going for `that` kind of message angle.
when its already doing a fk-ton of mis-representation of not only having some characters having massive shifts by decades on how old some of them should be, but completely ignoring how some power sets function and make them even look terrible and generic in many cases, since it even lacks subtle little quirks some villian/hero characters had to set them apart, even in thar move set, powers and more.
Plus you know in a animated series, you really fk`d up hard if you decide to go with the super bulky and blocky design for a large portion of the cast, with no variation or design differences and only went for that to likely just pull 3D animation in a 2D style to `speed up production` but didnt even think to take advantage of the fact your doing it in 3D, it would be way easier to slap on personalization elements to stand it out.
and its one thing to use 3D animation for generic-kun dispoable enemies, but when you have the same generic equipment design on a squad that is suppose to be a `suicide squad cast` that would normally be chosen because they have unique power sets and abilities and ways of thinking that can benefit the team, it does not help when you make them wear what is basically a uniform set of wear, that does not have a shred of iota that helps to stand out the personality they should have associated.
So at the end of the day, if you were to have the characters shown off on-screen without them declaring thar names or anything, i would just see them as generic random-kun characters who are likely to die off before the episode and if they manage to stay alive longer then that, then clearly its just favorit`ism being present, when they have effectively NOTHING change about them over time. Basically a lack of `proper` story telling especially via visual changes, is just lousy and forgettable.

I agree with a lot of what you said. For me the problem with the villain designs is that they are generic and forgettable, and this isn’t show specific, too many superhero media lately have been trying to take the “spandex”/superhero out of superhero costumes and designs. The origin why superhero’s wear spandex is because they’re based off outfits circus strongmen wore when they perform, they’re meant to be theatric and a spectacle because these are superheroes performing grand feats. Turning the costumes into standard power armors make them look the same as any other power armors/battle suits, and like you said at 1:40 yes they may want to change designs to stand out compared to comic counterparts but if doing so makes them not stand out as a whole/with the other shows design you have a net loss. And yes tights and spandex costumes may be weird but sometimes you need weirdness to make stuff rememberable. the xenomorph, the predator or darth Vader are all somewhat weird and out there, do you think they’d be as remembered if they were the standard cloverfeild grey monster or just some bad guy?
Additionally you brought up Amazo redesign for justice league, the reason why that works while the Mr mxyzptlk doesn’t is because while it changes the design it doesn’t try to take the comic book out of the comic character. The JL design is modeled after classic 60 sci-fi robots instead of changing it to the current robot design ideas, so it still gives the feeling of fantastic sci-fi design/comics. Plus it conveys the idea of amazo the adapting robot ironically better, starting out as a literal blank slate to have elements added to then becoming a literal golden god. Mr mxyzptlk on the other hand while being more designed just looks like a standard magic elf like any other magic elf vs the comics of a short imp man in a weird suit who can alter reality itself which has a stronger impression (same with parasite ones a standard giant monster the other is a creature whose “costume” is actually his warped flesh)

I don’t see a reason to redesign characters like livewire to the degree that she looks generic and boring, deathstroke to the point that he’s an anime heartthrob that looks too “clean” for a grizzled super soldier, parasite where he’s a mecha, or Mr. myxlplyx to the point that he looks like a fantasy cat face elf. When I look at this show, I find the split between the "good" designs and the "bad" designs to be genericness. For most of the "bad" designs, a common thread is that the villain is just wearing normal black, brown or gray clothes (like livewire, intergang, heatwave, and damage). I also don't like metallo's design, because it a genertic un interesting reinvention. While lex is also wearing generic clothes, I think his design is greatly improved by the use of his signature colors: lime and purple. Mxy is a cool interpretation, playing on the shonen inspiration of MAWS. Brainic is a design i like mainly for the weird headshape and the cloak, makes him look menacing and a little demonic. Slade is also a good design (both regular and in power armor), due to being similar to the comics. In my opinion, the best designs are parasite and atomic skull, mostly likely a combination of the notable colors compared to the muted colors of other characters and being pretty comic accurate.

When I watch superhero shows i come for interesting or memorable designs, especially if it's not live action. The story keeps me around after. Out of the 11 villain designs I see for the show (im not counting antagonistic elements like waller, luthor, or myx) , only 2 of them peak my interest. Those being Atomic Skull and parasite, and even then only after the suit fucked ivo up from the pictures I've looked up. With the helmet Parasite looks like he's supposed to be in some mecha anime as fodder. It doesnt help that I hate the side shave hairstyle so Livewire is an immediate no for me. Animator here, wanna share my option. So the reason most people don’t like the way the characters might now look is actually more because of the art style more than the character designs. If you take a look at the art that was released back in 2019 or 2020 when this show was first announced the art seemed more solid and expressive. Also the reason they look so similar to Avatar the last Airbender is because they are booth animated by the same Korean studio, Studio Mir and use the same staff.
Anyway the problem I’m seeing is the outlines on everything is way too thin makes everything including the characters feel too light which is a huge detriment for scene with super powered characters, actions well like they have a lot less weight, key frame posing don’t always have enough impact and it hurt character design that relay on lines rather than silhouette. So the character designs seem kinda rushed which might be a budget issue or maybe a direction issue, if you look at some of the character or prop designs, some of them look like like they where given much thought or they went with an overly simple design to save money? Speaking of which, the shows budget seems low, you can tell with the way some of the background are done along with the effects as the series goes on, look like there wasn’t much comp work done here. For instance when you see Kara or Superman fire their heat vision you don’t see much glow/hallowing coming off the beams, which is something I would have done to make them have more impact? There are lot of other things but I feel a lot to do with a rocky production set up.
The animation team is doing pretty well regardless, but man I wish they stuck with the first art style and spent more time in pre production?

I do also want to add the inconsistency of quality in the animation, where you will either have an incredibly smooth and expressive cut with fantastic lighting and keyframes every now and then. Funny you bringing up all the villains powers coming from krypton tech, because I feel Spider-Man/spectacular Spider-Man is a great example of how you can do that but still differentiate them. For the most part, all of Spider-Man’s villains are results of scientific experiments or use advanced tech (lizard, doc oct, sand man, rhino, goblin etc) but not one two are identical or tech is similar to how another uses theirs, vulture and doc oct use their tools entirely different. Speaking of, Spider-Man also faces a similar problem of them trying to simplify all the villains to one source, specifically they often try making a lot of his villains have the lizards origin of turning into a mutated monster (rhino, vulture, green goblin) and it results in making them stand out way less/takes away their identity. What’s more interesting, rhino being mutated into a man rhino hybrid or him being permanently fused to a power suit of armor that resembles a rhino? Simplifying may make it easier to grasp but it also makes it so nothing stands out from them

This show is a textbook example of diversity being pushed into every crevice of its art and world does not make for good or interesting character designs. The Animated Series universe had a lot of template designs for its characters, but each one was also very striking and incredibly memorable with unique colour schemes, unique pieces of gear and attire, and strong silhouettes by focusing on what made each character unique. MAwS tries to be super diverse with ridiculous amounts of body types, skin colours, etc., but they all blend together into a grey goo of meh. Voltron and Avatar were not this bland, so it isn't just the art style itself that is the problem, but it does bring its own share of problems.
The only new character designs that aren't based on previous designs that kind of work are Brainiac, Kara, and Lois, but the latter does not even remotely act like the character she is supposed to be based off of. Heck, a lot of the characters don't act or behave like DC characters.
I also don't think the Avatar/Voltron anime look really works for the DC Universe. Practically everyone looks and acts so juvenile and the humour really doesn't help. It worked in Avatar and the Voltron reboot, but it is a poor match for DC. I also absolutely dislike how ridiculously dorky this show makes Superman/Clark look. Sure, he could act clumsy as his human persona, but this version does not strike a good balance that previous incarnations achieved. He looks and behaves way too boyish that only people way too into shipping would enjoy.
Then there is the fact that compares unfavourably to what came before, like The Animated Series, the DC animated movies, and even the live action media like Smallville. Making it look like anime does not automatically give this show a pass when it is this bland and forgettable.

i simply don't like the concept "we re-imagined all of them" just to use the "i-can't-belive-it's-not-anime" style of designs.
I don't think they are bad designs, but most look extremely generic, with weird hairstyles, random pieces of armor, details and lines going over their bodies... the main cast looks good, but many of the villains just give me the vibe of "the youth likes this, right?"...
Is as if the show is embarrassed to be a comicbook adaptation and wants to turn the original striking-yet-simple designs into manga designs, with much much duller colors.
Honestly is a miss in that department.

    • @IronTigrex
      @IronTigrex Před 3 dny +3

And in manga, the designs are not only generally more vibrant but also more unique between characters. If we take My Hero Academia for example to stay into "superhero territory", a lot of them have pretty "basic" suits but with at least an accessory that gives a hint about their power and/or helps in some manner, e.g. Bakugo with his giant grenade gauntlets. Not only do they give the hint that his power is about explosions but they also serve as reservoirs for his explosive sweat. You look at Silver Banshee in My Adventures with Superman, how would you know that her helmet helps her to have super screams and not do something like shoot some sort of laser like Kryptonians do?

Yeah and this mentality has been happening for a while for superhero’s , both in and out of comics, adding unneeded seam lines or removing all colors and making it just armor. Yes the spandex is “weird” but the reason superheroes wear those is because the look is based off circus strongmen who would perform great feats of strength, they’re meant to be theatric and somewhat spectacle.
Second on the “I can’t believe it’s not anime”, I’m also getting sick that that’s the only style for action shows now. And it makes me all the shows look alike (I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen the bolin side mouth/open jaw) I know there often made by the same animation studio but many studios have made multiple shows with different looks/plus the added unnecessary detail would make it more work to animate? On the one hand I do think it’s a question of personal preference and people having to get used to the new look.
For example Mr Mixipitluck may look drastically different then what people have seen from Superman the animated series. But having seen anime like the Tenchi series I was more accepting of it.
In the other hand while the having everything be based on technology from Krypton makes sense in universe it does make everything look a really similar to the point of making it look interchangeable. Or lacking individual flair.
Some things can be easily fixed with a bit more customization like Silver Banshee, and Intergang. Others like livewire need more work. Though I do find her base human design interesting. It’s important to note that it did look like she was going to have a pure energy form that looked more like what was in the Superman animated series show. But haven’t gone back to that. I’ve noticed throughout time and especially now, people don’t really like change or don’t give it a new idea for something a chance to become popular or iconic until it stays long enough for people to like it or if it becomes popular cuz the story it’s in is received well. And people will either switch up or tolerate (unless they wanna be stubborn or really do feel that way) the change when the movie or show or form of media is good but will rag on any changes even harder if it’s bad. And in a way it doesn’t really matter and isn’t really a big deal if u think about it. Like just look at Celtic/pre Celtic fairies and fairies now. Or how vampires used to be ugly and bloated. And it wasn’t just Disney or other more kid friendly outlets who changed pre alpha cryptids to god mothers. Hell even Disney changing messed up stuff for kids isn’t bad, led to iconic characters and fanfic- interpretations of fairy tales. More options, variety, and content people like. Hell there’s a reason James Gunn lives obscure characters… cuz he can do whatever he wants and the non existent fans literally can’t complain and thankfully they’ve been good changes. There are changes I don’t like but I’m kinda done pretending or acting like that actually gets to dictate what should be done with these already existing characters. Lotta people say just make ur own OC when they change them but then either don’t see it and stick to what they already are familiar with or shit on it for anything even if it ain’t bad. I’d prefer if many of the villains were actually biologically super-powered but many seem to act like it has to be what they like or what’s been popular before. Making statements. Some at least are able to explain why it should be this way but even then fiction be fiction and change will just happen. Hell the timmverse changing so much is why we have so much stuff that people don’t want changed but just give it a chance. At least let it have an opportunity to become popular and iconic. Also not liking a show cuz ur not horny enough when u see a drawing is crazy.

For me the worst is damage. 1. The change has no good reason (even if they didn’t want to do tights/spandex his comic look could translate well and they already did huge monsters so why not him)
      2. They design they went with looks dumb, giant robot arms and a guy ballooning man vs a hulking black monster

I love Livewire's new design. But that's based on just finding her more attractive than older designs I've seen lol She's got such a cool vibe too. I think her hair flying up only when she uses her powers is a cool touch. Kara's design is adorable. Luz took a bit to grow on me-- Oh, case and point-- I mistyped Lois as Luz because she looks so similar to the Owl House main character. This version of Lois is fun but I feel like the lookalike-ness is very distracting.
I'm hoping the characters will look more like their older iterations as the seasons continue. More personalized from the bulky armor, as said in the video. Because this is early on when Superman is just starting out and everyone is young, it makes sense to me that they would slowly make the characters look closer as they age. I assume the villains would gain their powers from extended use or freak accidents while using the tech. Like with Livewire-- I am hoping her experience was a taste of what's to come. Outfit-wise they'd no longer need as bulky suits if the powers were theirs. Livewire would look amazing in anything they put on her, but I am absolutely not opposed to seeing something more... comic-y on her, for lack of a better word. Maybe a result of no longer being able to blend in and be stealthy anymore-- too infamous-- so she decides to swap anonymity for something flashier. Even if only a nod to that lightning bolt suit as a one piece swimsuit in a brief scene or something would be cool. Maybe Lois grows her hair out and begins donning red lipstick-- either as a one-off event or to show an increase in confidence/a way to put herself "in the zone" for work. Just throwing things out there, but characters' appearances changing over seasons, especially reflecting character growth/change is so fun. Guess we'll see what they have in store for us.
Overall it's a fun show that tries to balance keeping things new and fresh with staying true to the essence and themes of the characters. If people like any changes they may be emulated in future comics and shows. If not then they won't. With something from such a long running franchise, there's no use getting too upset over a different take on a character. If people hate it, it's unlikely to stick.

I think all of the designs are fine, especially since they are all origin designs, that being the very first, so it does make sense why there isn't much flair to their costumes. I hope throughout the seasons to come, characters design evolve slowly into a mix of their comic book designs and these ones. Pidelics design I like the most, it gives off a trixter god vibe, and if they went with original design, it would've heavily made him stick out like a sore thumb, and not in a good way.
I'm just hoping Zod and Doomsday look absolutely amazing compared to everything else. They shouldn't have origin designs but fully fleshed out ones. They are already at the end of their stories and are both at their absolute peak in strength and skills, the designs should display that.

And Amazo(who was just presented in a comic that happen between both seasons) that look more organic that all human in the series, curiously all point out that this version of Amazo gonna become other character, maybe a mix between kellex and the eradicator,

We do see that he does indeed have standard Mxy powers, and I don't mind the idea of him having his power sealed in certain realms because in early appearances he has been sealed by mere magic sticks in the mud, but that final battle is more "big boss" and less "Mxy". Where's the mischief? The humour? Like, slap someone with ten bats if you're going to open a hundred portals to nowhere.

Regardless on how we feel about the story & characters, The hyper generic aesthetic and weak design conventions are magnified by the setting as it leans towards a bland science fiction appearance in an unremarkable city. Fictitious elements that have weak identities work best in settings submersed entirely in it, and those with stronger design elements work better in everyday environments (not that strong design elements don't work well in deeply submersed settings). This is because strong designs add a lot of color and stand out in the generic, and boring, and weak design elements have a hard time over saturating the environment. Urban environments have malleable identities, it can be gritty, utopian or whatever based on what you're going for, you can add a preferred flavor of escapism to your reality. This show takes generic scifi and places it sparingly in a generic city, its like painting a lighter shade of gray on gray.
On top of that, There is no intrigue or mystery because we already know what the source of anything supernatural is, having everything trace back to kryptonian tech makes the world feel small, and even if it makes the creative process cohesive, satisfying, or easy to work with, its not like the viewers experience the same process. Creating is different from consuming, a writer should expect the audience to take apart the story, because the audience wants something new from the story, something creative or unexpected found in the world building, plot twists, etc. which they haven't seen from other works or themselves.
Theres a lot of media that have generic fictitious elements but put all their eggs into the plot, or vice versa or some other facet of the story like art or dialogue and I'd still call them a success, I don't get anything special with this show.

@@kwayneboy1524 I think the DC universe works best when it does go willy nilly, it just makes the world feel more intriguing and less derivative, like if I wanted to add poison ivy and I just said "oh she got injected by some kryptonian plant juice" and we repeated the exact same formula for every other hero or villain, at that point why would I even care about their origins. Plus all these characters and elements of the world are already well established to the audience, I don't need to see another tasteless spin of the same idea, things can still be interconnected but deriving it from a single source gets old quick and undermines the DCU's strength of blending different genres of fiction in a way that the audience can accept. Like the tone shift of having a street ninja hang out with a space cop and a cowboy usually doesn't work, but these parts are so well established and rooted in decades of narrative exploration that it really does work.

If you're going with the version of DCU where the world was normal before all the capes and masks then I feel you need an underlining cause and reason as too why we advanced to cyborgs, mechs and weather controlling tech because stuff like that kinda just doesn't happen over night. I think stuff like the Flash and Gotham did this well by create one grand incident that would create all the weirdness and force the world into an age of colorful madness.
In this case I think it works to explain why villains can have weapons that beat Superman and how the Dcu can be so technologically advanced.

I have no problems with the style contaminated by anime, I like anime and I like the results of the character design, equally I also appreciate any reinterpretations such as Lois Lane young tomboy and black Jimmy. However, perhaps dressing Kara up as Android 18 and making her wear armor that is clearly an Evangelion unit is a bit too much, it goes beyond homage and becomes something inelegant that looks more like a fanfic than doing good for the material you have on hand. My 2 cents.

Yeah I specifically hate it when shows “inspired by anime” end up or devolve into just references to other anime. It’s not really inspiration but more “do you know this show, do you get it, I watch liked shows so that must mean you like this show”
And I’m also ok with art styles inspired by anime but to me the problem is that this just feels so lacking/just copying rather than creating. Like look at the 2000s teen titans show, that was clearly anime inspired but it still had artistic flair/elements to it, this and other similar designs shows just feel like they mimic it but don’t necessarily have something to make it their style

In my preference, To your the headline with analysis. I loved that's classic and movie version. That's all villain design are really pisses me off. I take Professor Ivo.
He's to be include Tony Stark's parody with purple scorpion-like armour with feeding of energy. In classic version Ivo wasn't Parasite, he was ordinary mutant, which could health regeneration with higher IQ. That was another guy, which become Parasite from accidentally got purple radioactive weight. In become kaiju like Nemesis from Godzilla, terribly shit.
Deathstroke, Batman's and Teen Titan's antagonist, still working on Waller, that's working colonel Rick Flag, Slade must to be prison Belle Reve. His design make classic. Slade looks mush younger, any doesn't look older. Even wasn't mutated. His hair looks stupid, his hair must shaved nape w/o bang, his face grow a spanish beard, loss of one eye. His armor makes black-orange suit with samurai swords, no laser sword and shoker. Mask with black "blind" side on left face. HIs future had daughter, Rosie.
Livewire is black, her skin is pale and hair looks bad. Make punk hairstyle. Her suit makes hot with open hips and bolt-like cleavage.
Hot Wave, Flash's antagonist, man in woman's voice, that's a drag queen. Movie with Flash about Paradox, was saved of Superman from Pr. Zoom's tiny bomb on his belt.
Silver Banshee look like schoolgirl. Her hair are grey-blue instead white hair with black strands. Her helmet mixed Iron Man and Predator's helmet, but inside helmet mini-computer hologram with scream vibration. She, Kyle and Albert are fucking no-metahumans. Mist hadn't sisters, had his daughter, Nash. Siobhan had real brother, Bevan.
Lex Luthor was gala-diner so gloomy and unhappy, Lex was boastful, charismatic, foxy, viciously and despicable. Wasn't Ivo's assistance, he was alone with assistance, Mercy Graves. He's wears that's bomber jacket, Lex was still wears normal and stylish jackets. "Batman vs Superman" was played Jessie Eisenberg was adorable and foxy villain.
Kara Danvers AKA Supergirl is supervillain, wears like Kryptonian soldier, adopted from General Zod, not Brainiac. Brainiac is robotic rip-off Shockwave of an overrated sell-out green-skinned Megamind. Seriously, Brainiac's color design are black, grey, green and lilac/pink. Zod's color design are red and black/grey. She's wasn't baby, babies don't remember things, I was seems that, was Adora's lost twin-brother, Adam. She was preteen girl, arrived on the Earth, finded new adoptive lovely couple Danvers, after Clark become adult with long hypersleep. Kara never to be monster, become good superhero.
All the others I'm not talking at all, especially big man with tiny head remind Bane and Plankton aka Plank-TON from Spongebob in 3D.

This show is basically having all these powers have a Kryptonian tech origin so they all have armored look. But like with livewire I think eventually it will become part of the individual after enough exposure. Hopefully by season 3 the the villains are more "organic" with their powers.

I think the connecting element work, but the designs feel more more generic when more characters are presented.
But they could use it as their advantage, for example untill now all is based solely on Ivo and kriptonian tech, and can make the fesign evolve showing the influence of Lex Luthor, giving them upgrades and turning it more biological for some or more earthling designed techand resources.
For example Damage in commics is a Hourman variant, and is far stronger than in the series, he could be the moster 1 hour and have 23 hours coulddown, but is stronger than comics Superman.
They could upgrade his arm with Miraclo what end causing a adverse reaction and make it look more monstrous.
Itself what they are doing with Kara, they start with a bulky armor, pass to a hybrid version, and next is a mirror from Clark, could be interesting if they go a step futher and she end altering it to her liking maybe incorporsting the color scheme of the JLA, adding white details.
