    It's your arrangement that makes something out of it. Chat-GPT scrapes and recombines things statistically without meaning, feeling, purpose or understanding it really. :) You put emotion into it.

Look up "emergent behavior/abilities" of the new larger LLMs. I'm not an AI researcher but I work with Copilot and Bing Chat for a long enough time to realize that there must be more to it. Talk to Bing Chat and let it explain other developers code to you and how to improve it or how to integrate features. I was skeptical too but the more I work with GPT4 the scarier it gets. However, I also believe that it will take much longer for AI systems to take over Ollie's job than mine 😅

      In my experience, most of the time AI is like a harmonic train of thought, so to speak. No real phrasing, no idea where to stress for better impact, not a clue how to end a phrase and start a new one. It's like a weird musical fever dream, lol. But it seems from time to time it can produce something that can sound interesting and even inspiring and it's a bit random.

    The music really hit me in the feels tbh, stirring stuff. The composition may have come out of a computer, like the ingredients for your soup might come out of a food processor, but I assure you it's how the creative human mind creates and affects the process of it becoming a song that gives it soul. The micro changes in timing when you hit the strings in the guitar or strike the bodhran, the choices you make when setting gain, reverb and so on for each instrument to create a desired feel. Choices made when mastering it for release. These are irreplaceable because the desired effect is based on another person's emotional appreciation of it. The ability to simulate those things will get "better" but ultimately will never match how we feel about art created by skilled individuals due to the difference in how we perceive emotional creativity as people

      I've been playing irish music 30 years and they're technically in the top tier type tunes among the hundreds and hundreds of tunes I've learned. None of my fellow Irish traditional musicians thought they sounded off or bad in anyway. In fact I've learned and played far worse tunes than that over the years.
      I'd wager if I did a video without mentioning AI they would have sounded absolutely fine :D :D

      @@banjoguyollie The tunes actually sound cool (from the perspective of someone who has been playing trad for more than 20 years), as you said. If you hadn't said anything about the AI I wouldn't have thought they were generated this way. I did also try this a couple of weeks back and the results were much, much worse. Maybe they changed something or it is just luck with the AI. Did you generate a handful and then kept the ones you liked best or were those the first results?
      My trials were all asking the AI for jigs, maybe it is more difficult for the AI to generate credible ones. I will give reels a go 🙂

      There exist a ton of traditional tunes written down in the simple ABC format, which is easy for a language model to work with. They're part of GPT's training corpus. Other styles of music either don't have as much information, or they're in formats which aren't nearly as easy for language models to make sense of (try making guitar tabulature with chatGPT!)

    Mr. Ollie, I must ask, what is that wind instrument in the second song that you use that sounds so smooth? The one that seems like a metal pipe. You use a wooden soprano (?] recorder (correct?) and then the metal pipe one seems to be for the deeper tones.

    So, having done this now, do you think AI is something that can make *new* Irish tunes, or music in general? This is coming from someone keeping AI at arm's length - it just seems to me that the AI can pull from the characteristics of a particular genre and regurgitate a unique tune out of it, and maybe even mix two or more genres together, but do you think it could go beyond that? You can argue that's all we've been doing for eons, just mixing things together, but a lot of it seems more fresh than what I imagine AI could pull. To pull an example, I don't believe AI could have invented the sound Radiohead has before Radiohead made it even if it had all the same sources Thom Yorke had when he started really writing music.

    • @banjoguyollie
      @banjoguyollie  Před rokem +5

      yeah I think for very derivative stuff like this, and traditional musics in general are very derivative since they operate within a standard set of parameters like keys and time signatures and codified progressions, it does a more than adequate job. It'll spit out exactly that, something that is codified and withing the parameters of the genre. What it won't be able to do is extrapolate and create sth that breaks those rules in a meaningful way , or at least not unless you ask it specific ways which then doesn't make it all "AI" generated since you are the operator.
      what I can't see it do , as you mentioned is create a new style / sound , especially considering so much of what makes Radiohead, Guns n roses, Nirvana etc... ( a genre defining band in general ) , what they are is not only is their ability for transgression . Not to mention the context of the time period at which they appeared
