  • Hopefully the EPA doesn't take down this video! Trains & Locomotives can be dirty: here's an example of over 25 ALCO, EMD & GE locomotives throttling and blowing exhaust all over the place! True gritty railroading at its finest. There's nothing quite like the heat and smell of diesel exhaust hitting your face when a notched freight goes roaring past! (Train info below)

    Despite these dirty catches, most trains don't spew smoke like this all of the time. In fact, on average, hauling freight by rail is 3x more fuel efficient than by trucks on the highway!

      BACK THEN, THE RAILROADS TOOK CARE OF THEIR LOCOMOTIVES!TODAY, THEY COULD CARE LESS ABOUT TAKING CARE OR THEM! AS LONG AS THEY ARE MAKING MONEY FOR THE RAILROADS, THIS IS ALL THE RAILROADS CARE ABOUT!THEY WORK THE LOCOMOTIVES HARD ,WITHOUT ANY MAINTENANCE AND CARE.HENCE THE BLACK SMOKE COMING FROM THEM!THIS SHOULD BE UNACCEPTABLE TO THE PEOPLE WHO LLIVE AND BREATHE IN THEIR SMOKE! LOCOMOTIVE MAINTENANCE SHOULS BE A PRIORITY FOR THE RAILROADS TO KEEP THE EQUIPMENT PROPERLY MAINTAINED.ABD IF THEY DONT, THEN THERE SHOULD BE SEVERE PENALTIES IMPOSED ON THEM WHEN THEY FAIL TO GIVE THE LOCOMOTIVES THE RIGHT MAINTENANCE THEY NEED! THERE'S NO REASON OR EXCUSE FOR ANY OF THESE LOCOMOTIVES TO SUFFER LIKE THIS! THE RAILROADS MUST GO BACK TO GIVING THEM THE PROPER MAINTENANCE AND KEEPING THEM CLEAN,AS WELL AS CHANGING THEIR AIR FILTERS AND KEEPING THEM TUNED UP! NO EXCUSES!

      @Terry Wallace or ya know Alcos just smoke as they take off and the turbo spins up, same with GE and EMD. All diesels smoke as they start up.

    Actually all that black smoke is just airborne carbon particles ("soot")--harmless, except on toast. It's due to an overly rich fuel-air mixture entering the cylinders before the turbo gets a chance to spool up and deliver the proper amt of air ("turbo lag"). Alco used Woodward Governor fuel controls--who also supplied fuel governors to early jet engines, though not the same kind!.

      @K8S450DR Před 2 lety +6

      Interesting info, but only small correction what about the soot - as long as I know, soot as itself actually is relatively harmless, but toxic and carcinogenetic substances produced during incomplete burning of diesel (f. e. aromatic hydrocarbons like benzoapyrene, benzene...) are caught on soot.

      Saw a guy recently videoing some railroad activity from a perforated-steel pedestian overpass. Locomotive just beneath overpass belched out a plume of black exhaust all over the guy's self-described brand new, $300., impossibly WHITE, white skinny jeans. Pretty sure he had a different opinion on the harmlessness of soot😆

    That Conrail GE towards the beginning just had a flat out blown turbo

    • @Henry5623
      @Henry5623 Před 5 lety +2

      Honestly I would just about bet money it didn't have a blown turbo but rather either a injector that was trying to stick or some oil that was getting past some piston rings and ultimately getting blown out into the exhaust manifold where it was igniting. I've seen U-boats do the same thing for the same reasons. I could argue that it could be some aging wearing valves allowing oil/unburnt diesel to make it's way into the manifold which would cause the same reaction. That said if a turbo is blown it'd be belching out thick black smoke/flames pretty much continuously. Not spitting out smoke/flames kind of intermittently like that ex Conrail C40-8W was doing.

      @@philipmayle5673 it sure does make the air dirty! I agree wish there was even more black smoke being pumped out into the air so we can breath it into our lungs! Smells and feels great!

    Love those smoking Alcos.Years ago when I was Little kid and lived near the Maybrook line of the NYNH&H RR they were using Alco FA1 diesels.You could really see the black smoke when these diesels were starting off or when they were pulling hard up a grade.

      Maybe if she tries riding Amtrak, e.g. the Coast Starlight, from Portland to LA and back - she just might turn into a train-nut!
      (I know I sure did. It’s about the only time I think visible soot is a good thing.)

    Diesel burning, smoke blowing & cargo delivering. At 2:56 that lil helper that comes through is almost wearing the old Burlington Route paint scheme. At 3:24 the heritage Delaware & Lackawanna power is AWESOME!! Another stellar Central Penn Rail Productions offering!!
