i love that jack was honest about hating argylle, i can understand why youtubers feel awkward saying they didnt like smth when the creator's gave them smth for free but at the end of the day your audience cares about that kinda honesty and trust creators more who will admit if smth wasnt up their ally.
List of Books: 1:16 The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride 3:01 Argylle by Elly Conway 5:34 Brutes by Dizz Tate 7:00 Black Butterflies by Priscilla Morris 10:00 On Writing by Charles Bukowski 11:34 Bad Diaspora Poems by Momtaza Mehri 12:35 Against The Loveless World by Susan Abulhawa
Can you review some of your favorite books published by Faber & Faber? I’ve never heard of them and love finding new books and publishers through your channel. Also you added 120 books to my TBR list. Thank you.
I think you might enjoy "where do you come from" by Sasa stanisic, an acclaimed German author whose family fled from Yugoslavia in the early 1990s. The novel (especially the ending) has some experimental writing that readers seem to either love or hate ;) Here's the blurb: Saša Stanišić's Where You Come From is a novel about a village where only thirteen people remain, a country that no longer exists, a shattered family that is his own. Blending autofiction, fable, and choose-your-own-adventure, Stanišić explores a family's escape during the conflict in Yugoslavia, and the years that followed as they built a life in Germany. He examines what it means to learn a new language, to find new friends and new jobs, to build an identity between countries and cultures.
Could do you an introduction to literary fiction video?? I read classics and new genre fiction, but have rarely picked up literary books as I don’t know where to start. I feel like I need some good recommendations and I trust your opinion lol
Can you do a reading vlog? Just show us how you read through the day or week and update us on the books you’re reading throughout the vid. Would love to see that from you!!
When I first saw the title, "Black Butterflies" I thought of the song by Denise Williams entitled, "Black Butterfly." Based on your description of the novel, there may be some similar themes. Now I want all of the books!
Thank you for adding 2 more books to my neverending TBR! Black butterflies is already in my cart, and Against the loveless world sounds heartbreakingly beautiful!
Jack, these are all fab! I'd love to see a round up of books about Palestinians and the history of the land and people or about stories told by/from Palestinians. Much love!
Jack Edwards, if you haven't yet, you should look up some José Saramago literature, he is the only portuguese author to have ever earned a Nobel Prize in Literature, and his writing is something really interesting, because it so characteristic (you'll understand this the very second you open up one of his books) - this could also be a segway to make a video all about nobel prize winners?
I am from Sarajevo and I am really interested in what you will think about the Black Butterflies. Looking at the cover, I encourage you to read about the history of the Sarajevo City Hall which was also a city library at the time and how it was set on fire. I didn’t know about this book before you mentioned it but now it’s on my radar ❤ 🇧🇦
watching this a month later and youre saying how many months in jan makes me thinks that i barely remember anything from jan and feb bcs it was academic rush season 😭
Just finished reading a beautiful collection of original fairy tales entitled 'Sillies, Fancies, and Trifles' which is perfect for the season. Thought I'd add it to this lovely list and see what everyone else is reading, let me know :)
Do you plan to read anymore sci-fi after Project Hail Mary? I know it's not really your favorite genre, but I would so highly recommend 'Blindsight' by Peter Watts. It's so good! The synopsis on the back of the book sounds kind of silly, but I assure you it's a spectacular book.
i went to see argyle after jack's letterboxd rating and i only rated it so high because of its ties to kingsman. i wholeheartedly agree with his review that i have been desperately waiting for
i HATED Brutes soooooo much until i read it by audiobook. it's a VERY "vibes only" book, but if you listen to it by audiobook, you will realize there IS a plot there. it also makes it clear who is speaking. the narrator also has a very unique voice which makes the girls' toxic relationship really feel real. i would honestly only recommend first reading this by audiobook and THEN buying it in hard copy (like i did) after. this went from a 1 star to a 5 star for me after switching from the ebook to audiobook. such an insane story and all of these girls need help 😂😂😂😂 also, for some reason, audible has TWO audiobook versions of this. ONLY get the one that looks like the cover of the book in this video. (faber). the one with the other cover is poorly done, doesn't have chapter breaks with names and is just so bad that it was re-recorded. why they don't just have the better one available is beyond me, but make sure you get the one with the two girls and BRUTES in pink across the audiobook photo!
Begging you to read “Betty” by Tiffany Mcdaniels (I literally comment on all your platforms soz) it’s just so heartbreaking and amazing. It’s about a girl, Betty and her family as they grow up as Cherokee in America. It is gut wrenching, devastating and one of the best books I have ever read. It’s based on the authors mother which adds even more hurt!
If you are interested in the 90's Balkans history through fiction, you should definitely check out Lana Bastašić, her works have been translated to English and she is shortlisted for basically everything in this region 🤗
I will say, the Heaven and Earth Grocery Store gets way darker than you’d expect. I was kind of shocked. I would look up Trigger Warnings for anyone interested in the book.
Speaking of movies, have you seen the film 'American fiction'? I think it's still in cinemas. It touches on the book publishing industry in the US. I can't recommend it enough :-) Would love to hear your thoughts on it if/when you've seen it.
If you watch a movie adaptation of a book prior to actually reading the book, does that circumvent your imagination since you may resort to that interpretation? I would think it would.
Hard agree on hating Argylle. I felt like it was such a bait and switch and then it wasn’t good. I am convinced they made up so many gimmicks to sell the movie - the book, spreading the rumour Taylor Swift wrote it (through a pointless inclusion of a scottish fold cat to stoke the fire). I was actually annoyed after seeing it and felt i had wasted my time. Don’t sell me Henry Cavill and then take him away.
I picked up Argylle yesterday. But I honestly picked it up because the cover was designed by MinaLima who were the graphic designers for Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films. I love them and wanted to support them.
The whole Argylle thing was a big dumb gimmick that didn't work because nobody cared. The film was announced as an adaptation of this unreleased spy novel, and it was supposed to garner lots of attention and have people guessing who Elly Conway really was, and act as free promotion or whatever, but as I said, nobody gave a flying fupp, bar for a week or so where unhinged Swifties thought she had written it. Long story short, Terry Hayes and Tammy Cohen were revealed to be the names behind the book and it was confirmed that it was done for the film.
The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store was supposed to be set in Pottstown, Pa..I grew up in Pottstown, nothing at all about this setting. Don't remember any black people or subdivisions, at all! I never saw a black person or anything in this book until I moved to Florida. Just sayin'
Kudos to you Jack for picking “Against the loveless world” for your reading list. The Palestinian cause deserves so much more attention from media figures. This situation has literally highlighted the dark side of humankind.
Would love to see you read a Jewish perspective on the conflict as well! I’ve always admired your reviews, but as a Jewish person who has grown up needing to justify my existence, my family and I’s struggles, and my need for community, I would really appreciate you reading a more all-encompassing selection of books about such a complex region. It is not all black and white.
Everything is so short and contentless. Just showing books and a two-sentence review on Goodreads. There are no in-depth explorations of topics anymore, you're just mentioning if you've found them "good" or "bad" by the end of the year. Claiming you're a "book critic" implies a little bit more commitment when it comes to reviewing books and really digging deeper into them, analyzing them, communicating your ideas about them in an academic way and starting a conversation. I don't see where or when this ever happens, or at least not enough to label yourself an actual critic. You're just flashing books in front of a camera, reading the blurb, and that's where it often ends, or at least for 75% of the books you show in hauls (on both main and second channel), but never ended up actually talking about. The ones you do talk about are the Uber-famous TikTok books that are being reviewed by literally everyone.
You are absolutely correct about Argyle lol...the first book has only just come out and the movie is based on book 4 which hasn't been written yet ???? 🫠 how tf that works is yet to be revealed to me lmao
Also I too am not at all enticed by spy/assassin movies (or action at all tbh) but I really highly recommend the John Wick movies if you've not seen them before. The 1st and 4th are my favourites and they're SO good because of the stunning visuals and engaging fight scenes
Thank you for adding 2 more books to my neverending TBR! Black butterflies is already in my cart, and Against the loveless world sounds heartbreakingly beautiful!
“every book jack wants to read in february” is now my “every book I want to read in february”
Jack wants to read more books in February than I have read in a single year ever.
True😂
Had Brutes sitting on my TBR for so long now... it's time
i love that jack was honest about hating argylle, i can understand why youtubers feel awkward saying they didnt like smth when the creator's gave them smth for free but at the end of the day your audience cares about that kinda honesty and trust creators more who will admit if smth wasnt up their ally.
It's January, Jack, you're not supposed to have anything to show for it. It's simply a "survival" month. You made it to February, Congratulations! x
i think jack can safely say big book fear has been overcome

Could you do a wrap up video talking about the books you read?
As if he didn't film dozen of those videos
Yeah, would really like a monthly wrap-up. Where he does reviews but also compare with what he wanted to read, then ended up reading
YES! Would love a wrap up 📖❤️

I'm Croatian and I read that book in German, and I really loved it! It's very popular in Germany, but sadly not in the countries of ex-Yugoslavia.
The book won the German Book Prize in 2019.

Against the Loveless World is my favorite book of all time!
I literally have found the perfect addition to my reading list !Love the way you express yourself🤗

Jack, I'm very obsessed with your bookshelves 🤩 They're so beautiful, brilliant, inspiring
Jack, these are all fab! I'd love to see a round up of books about Palestinians and the history of the land and people or about stories told by/from Palestinians. Much love!
Another great video, Jack ! Also, Congrats on hosting the live chat the other day !! I love your channel ❤️ 🥳

Against the loveless world is on my TBR! I've been meaning to get a hold of it for ages. Looking forward to the review :)
I really enjoyed your Q&A video for the show ‘One Day’. Thank you.
I'm so excited for the reviews 🤍
It feels so rewarding staying up until 2am scrolling youtube and being rewarded with a new video from jack
This is so weird… I’m literally fixing my feb reading list on my notion… this will be so useful. Thank you!
I added the grocery store and vanishing half in my tbr for black history month! So nice to see a book of my monthly tbr matched jacks 🤓
I just started Brutes and am hoping to focus on it for the weekend! I'm loving the writing, though I'm only one chapter into it so far
I really think you should watch American Fiction. It is so relevant to this point of time and obviously to all the book lovers.
I loved Black butterflies!
Feels illegal to be this early 😭
Loved black butterflies

OMG I was just thinking about when u would post a new video this just made my morning 🥹✨
Greetings from Germany tho ☺️🙏
“questionable” is a really soft way to describe bukowski’s novels lol
‘Black Butterflies’ reminds me of ‘Tamas’ by Bhisham Sahni but set in Sarajevo.
Loved, loved The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store!!
I loved Argylle ❤
My friend and I had the theatre for ourselves and it was amazing! It was the perfect movie for us 😅
A book about our capital Sarajevo ❤️❤️❤️ finally you're reading about my country ❤️❤️❤️
watching this a month later and youre saying how many months in jan makes me thinks that i barely remember anything from jan and feb bcs it was academic rush season 😭
Black butterflies I am getting that book sounds unique ❤️❤❤
have been waiting to hear you talk about argylle ever since I saw the 2 star letterboxd review 😂
Jack 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🥺🤍
Just finished reading a beautiful collection of original fairy tales entitled 'Sillies, Fancies, and Trifles' which is perfect for the season. Thought I'd add it to this lovely list and see what everyone else is reading, let me know :)

Ugh I read like one book in January and I'm still not over the slump 😩
Interesting. I had the complete opposite with January. To me it feels like it should be like the third week of January, not the second of February
i HATED Brutes soooooo much until i read it by audiobook. it's a VERY "vibes only" book, but if you listen to it by audiobook, you will realize there IS a plot there. it also makes it clear who is speaking. the narrator also has a very unique voice which makes the girls' toxic relationship really feel real. i would honestly only recommend first reading this by audiobook and THEN buying it in hard copy (like i did) after.

Jack being invited to premieres is so cool.
hey jack! im going to london in may. do you have any recommendations for what to do there?
Got here passed 7 minutes feels good surprisingly
If you are interested in the 90's Balkans history through fiction, you should definitely check out Lana Bastašić, her works have been translated to English and she is shortlisted for basically everything in this region 🤗
Brutes sounds like an album Ethel Cain would make. Considering, she already has an album named "Preacher's Daughter".
OH my goodness I've Never been this early ☕😃 I now have some new books to go read 😁
13:45 Nice to know it’s not an unhinged amount of books
I will say, the Heaven and Earth Grocery Store gets way darker than you’d expect. I was kind of shocked. I would look up Trigger Warnings for anyone interested in the book.

what’s his letterboxd im trying to see his argylle review 😭
Me when Jack makes a new video 🎉🍾
As a Bosnian, I really hope you read Black Butterflies
❤
I thought your video said 'books I finished reading in February' and had a mild panic attack that February was already over 😆
best 14 minutes of your day is here y'all.
why does jack in the books get more content than the main account lmao
PLEASE READ HONEYBEE BY CRAIG SYLVIE‼
So Jack decides to read across a web of genres this feb huh
Just when I said I was going on a two year book buying ban.
Hard agree on hating Argylle. I felt like it was such a bait and switch and then it wasn’t good. Hi Jack! I would love and be honored to recommend Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar to you. I think you would really like it!
Please let me work for Amazon reading books…
I am at work goddamn I just abandoned work to watch this video let us all pray I don't get fired 😢
I picked up Argylle yesterday. But I honestly picked it up because the cover was designed by MinaLima who were the graphic designers for Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films. I love them and wanted to support them.
Jack 🤝 books about girlhood
I read "every book I read in February" and had a seizure for 20 seconds
i spot slightly empty shelves behind you... working on a main channel video perhaps 🤨🧐
Hi Jack 👋

so real for those argylle comments haha
Hi jack I am buzzing to be here this early.... Love from india. ❤❤
Damn!! You DID NOT like that movie 😭😭
I read Heaven and Earth Grocery Store and didn't like it at all.
Feeling so validated you hated Argyle because I thought it was AWFUL and felt all alone. So cheesy and the acting was terrible !
Would love to see you read a Jewish perspective on the conflict as well! “this january i did so much and yet achieved so little” same. i got scammed by 2 people(?) online while trying to find remote work 😀
Icon (:
'brutes' is truly awful
😘 Promo SM
