I have the biggest radio mixed feelings since I can remember. No jog dial makes it a nono for me but I slowly fall in love with this radio... Anyway. 73 and keep it rolling!
They did provide a schematic for adding a DIY external encoder as a VFO knob for previous versions. I imagine it will work on the new one too. Hey, maybe I can finally get rich designing and selling some add-on! ;)
That is awesome that you can TX straight from the computer like that! One headset to rule them all.
The usb I/Q signal was honestly what I was curious about. That alone pushed me over the edge to consider this.
Went to their website and found the TBR-119, looks like a ruggedized version of the Q900 with a $2000 price premium.
Just so you know, it’s 48kHz wide, or there abouts. Totally useable though as demonstrated on HDSDR. Cheers!

I just have a problem with the manufacturer of this radio because I got burned so bad with my radio (that is the previous version) and it seemns that they are quite dishonest when it comes to branding and building customer base

I have great trepidation as well, but my optimist side makes (up?) these observations: With first versions, they seem to have tried to act as an OEM only and left the marketing and user support up to retailers like Ailunce and Retevis - that really did not work out well. Version 2 I'm not so sure about but Radioddity seems to be a (their only?) solid retailer there who does provide some notable level of support. For this version 3 they seem to be skipping named retailers and putting themselves out front for (at least technical) support.
Still plenty of doubt to be had, so I'm not going to strongly recommend that just any random person buy this radio. I do think amateurs with some combination of spending money, strong interest in SDR, experimentation and/or portable operations will find it attractive and useful. Obviously I'll tune my opinions once I've received, tested and used this thing.
@@Randrew you're right, if your curiosity and budget is bigger than common sense (radio related) then go for it ... you won't get any bang for your buck with this one (and most likely will be faulty, not performing, etc from my experience with their 'brand' ) ...
I have to point out that Ailunce/Retevis has the updated version with DMR and all the other stuff Q900 V3 has ... so their dodgy branding practices continues

Also that you can TX with PC software via USB ... so you can create a super clean signal of whichever bandwidth and dynamic you prefer, because you have all the freedom of an IQ modulator. Power is enough for portable and if you need more you can attach an amp. The latest V4 version just dropped below 500€ without any modules ... that is definitely on my whish list this year.
I will wait until the ethernet port is being implemented, then I can just leave it on my LAN and operate if from any computer.

@@TechMindsOfficial I still have my home made 3-1000Z amp with motor driven vacuum variables, which needs a little more drive but can output a kilowatt straight for 5 minutes, used to transmit fax in the 90s, this might still drive it to some 500watts, which is good enough for the most.
I hope you continue on your series about this very unique radio that I also plan to take up on mountains with tuned magnetic VHF/UHF loop for a good natural preselection.
Another follow up video demonstrating the firmware upgrading process would be interesting and beneficial for when the time comes to upgrade the firmware. Just got one of these radios and I'm quite excited with it's potential. I hope it proves to be a good portable setup for the long haul. Thanks Matt, you do a great and thorough on your videos. Probably the most frustrating thing about ham radio "comments" is the lack of understanding about what radios / equipment like this is for, and WHO it is for. (Xiegu get the same negative criticisms, which are mostly completely misguided).

I purchased a TBR-119 earlier this month as mentioned here already. Brother product to the Q900. I just found a few little landmines that I thought were bugs in the software. Found out about this from Guohe last night, still ticked!! I hope these help you all too.
The channel input is a massive bug on the 119. It changes the input frequency to whatever it feels like and the channel names get all jacked up too. I told them and they said they would look into it. Does the Q900 do the same thing?
Gyro didn’t work out of the box. Literally an error on boot. Needs firmware update for that to work apparently. How a product is released with a known component not working at all….. yeah…..
The biggest drama was the DMR side of things. Using encryption, I thought it was another software bug and reached out to them on it a few weeks ago. They said they would look into it. I just found out that you have to purchase the key, actually a pair of keys. The algorithm is proprietary, ok… but then issuing the key… that makes it a third party key. No thank you!!
They also failed to advertise that the amazing ‘frequency hoping’ feature requires you to purchase a key too. Oh and APRS also 😀 He said that only works in China. Is the Q900 the same thing?
You just spend $2200 (enough for 4 Q900s) and then they say that as it’s a professional SDR radio, not an amateur rig, they can charge for these things.
I get that the Q900 being a cheaper asking price and they want to make up some cash deltas by charging for added features. But on this, come on!!!
Also, there is no current way that I’m aware of to update the software/firmware on the 119. There is no USB port on the back like the Q900. The data cable does nothing except interface for CAT control. So I still would love to learn how to do that!
The guy on the what’sApp channel got a bit upset with me when I pointed these items out. There is some confusion on what is the sellers responsibility and the manufacturer responsibility. If something in the marketing was not clear, he said it’s not his fault, talk to them. But not saying that you are required to buy additional licenses for components already installed is apparently the sellers fault!!
What advantages did you expect from this heavy duty version? If you need a workout, just put some bricks in your backpack and maybe the Q900 on top.

You’re welcome Don! I was shocked when I pressed the TX on HDSDR and it started transmitting. Defo going to be trying this on air, especially for 2M SSB.

@Phillip Ramirez I have not tried with SDR Console. As far as I am aware SDR console would be able to control the radios frequency, but I don’t think SDR Console can process an IQ input? Maybe I need to recheck that.
@@pen25 SDR Console seems to want a DLL driver for any radio definition. I tried to set it up to use my QRP-Labs QDX as a receiver only and I figured I should be able to just point Console to the USB input audio stream, but I could not. I could be missing something and would sure like to be corrected if I'm wrong about it!
Anyway I punted and used HDSDR. Mat used the same methods in this video.

I think this transceiver will pull sales off Yaesu regarding the now 20 year-old Ft817/818nd it’s got everything plus more I am new to the hobby Mat but with the way things have progressed this radio offers all band portability with the modern advantages plus the output power, I would like to see a back to back test against the other QRP radios out in the world from all of the Chinese suppliers along with some of the top brands in the marketplace. After burying two TS-940s and one TS-2000 due to the "dots" problem, I went to Yaesu. The only Kenwood I recommend is the TS-430. I have two of them.
Really is a very slick rig for the price. Does seem a bit like cheating, having it encode in morse for you. No, I'm not being serious, lol. Of course, I would need it. I don't even want to know how long it would take me to get even remotely proficient at morse these days, lol. But having it decode on the spot is a nice touch as well. I'm half thinking about nabbing one of these. I don't have any license other than GMRS right now, so I wouldn't be able to do any transmitting on it, but I do enjoy just wandering through the bands and seeing what I can pick up. I really do wish I had more exposure to radio beyond CB when I was younger. Ever since I decided to grab an SDR on a whim one day, I've been slowly amassing various bits and bobs to add to my plethora of other hobby crap.
Anyway, thanks for the follow-up on this. It did answer a couple of questions I had floating around in my noggin. I really like this thing a lot.

The decoding could save your life
Regarding the cw decode i use an Mfj 464 which also allows the use of a keyboard but the de coder is very fickle you need a good clear signal for it to decode and it comes up in text on the built in screen .This radio has loads of great features and for the money it seems like a bargain .Thanks for posting .
My Ten Tec Jupiter has a keyboard option for CW, pretty cool.
Which power amplifier to use? For the 1.8 - 50 Mhz bands? I would like at least 100W.
Several available - probably best bang would be XPA125B ? - should work with this specification of radio.

I asked on the whatsapp group about the 4m band if unlocked. It is reported to produce only 3 watts with a high current. This means it will be very unhealthy to operate on 4m if not terminal for the transceiver.
That’s why it’s locked as standard, there are no filters in place for 4M. Interesting that their military version does support 4M thought.

Thank you for reviews. I like them because they are short and to the point. I ordered a Q900 with all the modules a month ago and yesterday they cancelled my order and refunded my money. Checking the other sites, they seem to be out of stock of everything. I guess I will have wait a few months and then try to order again. Is there a Canadian or US distributor I can order directly from? From what I have seen it is a great radio. Is the VHF/UHF memory programmable from a computer? And how do you set up the talk groups in DMR?

I received my Q900V3 today! I immediately started doing measurements on it and directly comparing to the Version 1 (Ailunce HS2) at 5W output.
Bad news. The TX harmonic suppression is even WORSE with the Version 3 compared to the Version 1 (HS2) which itself is not great. I'll do an in-depth video at some point, but for now my verdict is: Use low pass filters on the output in order to be (FCC) compliant over-the-air.
For example HS2:
Transmitting CW at 1.803 MHz: 36.4 dBm (almost 5W) at fundamental, 6.3 dBm at 3.606 MHz (second harmonic).
Q900V3:
Transmitting CW at 1.803 MHz: 37.8 dBm (a bit more than 5W) at fundamental, 11 dBm at 3.606 MHz (second harmonic).
I've only completely tested the two radios on the 160m and 80m bands, but have taken a peek at all HF bands and 160m thru 30m are truly awful with regard to spurious transmission.

@@TechMindsOfficial Since that post, I completed more exhaustive testing and comparison between V1, V3 and the Xiegu X6100. At some point I'll run my IC-7300 through the same power measurements.
There is some good news - on amateur bands 40m and up the harmonics get much better on both radios and most are compliant with FCC's 43 dB below the fundamental requirement.
160m and 80m are not compliant on either Guohe radio and 40m is compliant on V1 but barely not on the V3. Interestingly the X6100 is also not compliant at 160m but is everywhere else. I might need someone to cross-check my measurements in case my R&S CM300 power measurement isn't good down that low.
I also did a deep disassembly of both V1 and V3 radios side-by-side. V1 was a hodge-podge of little circuit boards poorly crammed in. V3 moves the extra boards' circuits (LO and BPF and ?) onto the top brain-board that is visible when you slide the cover off. That explains why V3 has a relatively tiny speaker on top - had to make space for more circuits on the top board! Their LPF board looks identical between versions, but V1's toroids were not potted (will rattle) while V3's are.
I've got video of all that, but who knows when I'll learn to do video editing ;)
and what is the purpose of the compass plugin, I understand GPS, but what would the compass plugin be used for? I see that it has different accessories when ordering, but I don't know this
Something called APRS, but since this radio can easily be used in the field maybe it can get you home when your phone has no bars.
compass is the same for radio as it is for your phone. it makes location more accurate

Hi Mat, thanks for another useful and informative video. Do you know if there is any possibility that the manufacturers will include transmit on the 4M band? If the radio had TX on 4M, I would have placed and order as the popularity is increasing in the SE of England (as you will know!) and the band is growing over Europe and even stirrings in the US. Surely this is not a big ask of the manufacturers?

Do you know if it is possible to disable the out-of-band limiter? In the USA some of us do MARS/CAP, which is outside the ham radio bands.
id be worried about spurious emissions since those out of band transmissions woudnt be filtered unless of course you filter them with a transmit filter
The radio's user manual says "All amateur segments are locked at the factory. If you need an experimental test, open it in the setting menu on the premise of complying with local regulations."
The same manual tells you how to do this in the "Launch operation (factory locked)" section, but as @Phillip Ramirez said, its filters may not work well for that application. As always, it's up to you, the US ham, to make sure your transmissions are compliant :)
I have the brother radio to this TBR-119.
It’s basically the same radio guts in a tank of a manpack.
They have all 3 ITU regions available on the radios. If yours was mailed with ITU region 1, then that’s why you are seeing those TX blocks.
That said, you can unlock the factory settings to allow on all ITU bands, basically no blocks.

I bought a Q900 and it seems a great radio, I got all three addons and the compass and gps works well but, DMR is working but I cannot get any volume from the speaker and the speaker mic still seems to have the analogue audio conning from it. Any suggestions?
Thanks for the video, but I don't think it's for me. Let me ask some questions? Can the Q900 send Text Messages via RF from 70cm to 160m? Can it send photo via RF from 70cm to 160m without a computer? For example, on HF band RX photos and view them on the radio display. Can I use it for my local Digital repeaters? Can I use it with an HT battery to make it very portable? When there's no propagation, can I use it to talk to other hams all around the world via digital repeaters and reflectors? Can I do terminal mode and access mode with it? Or PDN mode (Access and direct operations)? If it cannot do those few things, it's outdated in 2022 and it's not for me. I'm waiting for Kenwood 2023 products, ICOM, Elecraft, FLEX, and Yaesu to see what they will have. I'm so very happy every time I power on the Icom IC-705. It's complete joy when using the IC-705. If I have to buy another radio, it better be great. Remember guys, it's 2022, time when we can use our smart watches to have QSO. 73

Thanks for the great review. I wonder if it supports 11 meter band (have you tried) since it does not say "11m" on the meny, neither does it specify to support the CB 11m band in the specifications. I hope I am wrong, as I wanna buy this and use it as a CB-radio while I am taking my license. Tx/Rx on 33cm (902-928mhz) ?
That's within its advertised frequency range of 300 kHz to 1.6 GHz, but not a supported ham band. TX on 33cm is likely locked out by default, which can be overridden - see the user manual on how to do that. Not being a supported band probably means no proper output filtering for sure - what else may be inadequate we'll have to find out. You could certainly add output filtering post antenna port and would be well within the spirit of amateur experimentation!
I might highly consider buying one if it can be unlocked to transmit on 33cm and 23cm. Of course with the proper filtering. Has anyone tried unlocking either band and gotten a power output? I suspect pretty low, but I have amplifiers.

In the USA 33cm (902-928mhz) is an amateur band shared with low power, unlicensed ISM (Industrial Scientific Medical) which includes the 1 watt license free Motorola digital FHSS portables. TriSquare (now defunct) also offered two low cost 900 MHz HTs. 33cm is unofficially referred to as the "Aristocracy Band" as NO ONE offers ANY dedicated amateur equipment on it. (Alinco DID offer a dual band 220/900 HT but it wasn't well received). The 900 equipment in use is modified Public Safety comms by Motorola, Kenwood, and the odd Harris Thales. 900/33cm has excellent signal propagation i.e. the best of 2m and 70cm combined. Its signal works equally well in the city landscape of concrete and steel, and the "woodsy" metro areas.
23cm (1240mhz) is offered in the form of a TriBand HT by Alinco, and a few HIGH END base & one mobile ? by ICOM.
@@baronedipiemonte3990 I have a Down East Microwave 33cm transverter that I've used for SSB and CW communications. It works okay, but having one transceiver that covers everything up to 23cm would be nice. Be nice for portable operations, contests, Field Day, etc. BTW, I see Icom is coming out with a transceiver that covers everything 2meters and up to 10 Ghz! But I'm betting it will be ungodly expensive. lol

@@TechMindsOfficial Well the omnirig I used to use was just a little subset of commands that did some basic functions. Anyway I ordered the 900 but it wont be here until the 11th or 12th so I guess I will find out then or someone else might respond if they use HRD. thanks for the reply.
The manual says they have a FT817 compatible CAT command set and it is listed/specified in Appendix 2. The manual, BTW, has quite a bit more info than the HS2 or QR20 ones I have seen.
What is the Price of this Radio.. ?? (From your links) Crazy Price Range.. from Under $200. to over $1000.00 (Canadian dollars that is) not sure what would be correct range. So as not to be Took like a sucker.

It’s built like a brick! No mobile mount though so you would have to create your own somehow
I love mine its as good as my yaesu ft dx 10 q900 is quiter than the yaesu on ws. Less than s 5 .....plus its sleek ....Mchf this q900 and kn 990 are right there with the big 3 look out japan chinas gonna make you guys up your game and lower your prices Ke6iev.
Does this use the WinChip (or a clone of it), or is it implemented entirely in software?
It uses an ST Microsystems microcontroller from the STM32 family... and implements most things in software, as a Software Defined Radio is wont ;)

I bought one of these V3, from AliExpress. An utter heap of junk, no matter what the setting were the TX audio was unbelievably awful on all bands, even the FM TX audio was bad, maybe I got a bad one, also no real VFO, why? It took me ages to get my money back. I will stick with my FT 817 and my Xiegu X1600. The X1600, now there is a great transceiver from China, good signal reports straight out of the box, and with my home built HF-mini PA, a nice setup.
Is this a legal radio in the US ?
Yes. It has a manufacturers Self Declaration of Compliance (SDoC) with FCC Part 15 B "unintentional radiator" which is:
(a) accepted by the FCC in lieu of an actual certification grant for Part 15 devices
(b) the same type (Part 15) of compliance that Yaesu, Icom, etc seek for their Amateur radios

as a CW operator let me remind you, when once more you opt for the lazy path, avoid learning something, and use a keyboard to morse
-then at least do it correctly
which means learn the abreviations and qso procedures. which differ quite a lot from your watsapp-chatting or other digimodes.
you must learn what QRQ QRS means.. what QRU means.. what AR SK CL means .. what QRX2 means... and so on and so forth.
Learning morsecode is not just about the alphabet. Real CW operators know this.
A keyboard operator probably doesnt. And so he instantly does the wrong thing when someone sends him a "PSE QRS" for example. A very basic code in use on cw.
I think this is a stupid feature. I would not use it, also - one key is earier to transport than a fullblown 108 key keyboard :)
I had such a bad experience with Ali Express with my usdx transceiver with the built-in battery that I completely lost confidence in the Chinese. They refunded me 40 euros for the postage and I've been waiting for the repaired or replaced device for more than a year now. No one in the store is answering either. I'll probably have to write off the money. And we should still have faith there?
It’s not AliExpress as such that you had a problem with, it was just that one supplier/store. I guess like on EBay you will always get bad sellers. Not every store on AliExpress is bad. I’ve used AliExpress and never had a problem, maybe I’m just lucky, but I totally get your frustration.
