Nice that you can control it thru HD SDR. Couple it with a 100w amp and it could be a lot of fun. I really like the SSB 2m 70cm capability.
If remote operation via LAN-port becomes available, that radio might be a promising option for remote controlled shack.
While many will disparage the lack of a VFO knob, the lack of knobs probably makes this little transceiver more robust to carry in a pack for SOTA or POTA applications.
I was thinking thinking the same. This looks like exactly what I have been wanting. I need to set-up a small multi-band sdr manpack radio with digital functionality and at least some remote control. No proprietary connectors, internal battery, charge and operate with external battery, --- the internal fans will need to be swapped to Noctua "silent mode" fans but that is easy. Pair this with a Pluto Plus & R.pi, and an assortment of antenna for SIGINT Ops.
Thank you for this very informative video. Can't wait to see more of this radio!
Yachties are always looking for SSB MF/HF with GMDSS/DSC CLASS "E " encode/decode.....the only Radio's at the moment are very expensive ICOM-M803 and some older ICOM-M802's . Ideally with external amplifier and auto antenna tuner with 5-200 watt selectable capability. Such a system would require the call sign and MMSI of the Station/Operator as well... Just a thought Matt, 73's
Thanks for the video! I just purchased the version of this radio available in the US, the QR20. With the manual being a bit inscrutable, I am looking for any sort of information I can find. I suspect that the big breakthrough will come with future firmware updates. I would enjoy any additional video content that you would care to make on this promising radio.
Since there is no touchscreen, I think I would happily trade the micro LCD screen for an external VGA or HDMI port.
nice radio. was hoping it might be a contender as a WSPR TRX, but then you mentioned the price. shame. i might have to stick with using a PI Zero after all. thanks for another good video.
Great video thanks
Would be nice to see a video setup for digital modes
I got the SDR Transceiver for 455€ ... seams to be a fair price. I miss the VFO knob as well but it worked fine with HDSDR and flrig. Tuning by mouse wheel is comfortable like with other SDR radios/transceivers. WSJT-X runs well with the HS2 but not as sensitive like my Yaesu FTDX3000. For mobile operation I require a VFO knob. Hope someone will offer it soon.
Seems very solid, but think I’m still gonna save a bit and go with the icom 705
One of the problems with the IC-705 is that it is QRP.
@@RC-ld3cn That’s not necessarily a problem... Just depends on your use case.
Thanks for an interesting first review, looking for more! I am very interested in this radio as a "replacement" of my trusty FT-817ND and as a light-portable set-up with a nit more power than QRP. For me personally the HS2 seems as more value for money than the IC-705. Before pulling a trigger I have some things to clarify : 1. What are the real levels of the power output? I've seen one video where measurements were done on line and on NO one band the output was 20W, there was something like 17W on 40m or like. There was no info in this video about how the test had been conducted though. Have you been doing the output testing? 2. Have you been testing the ATU work? The tuner IS important for an emcomm or fun outdoors communications, IMHO, especially when circumstancies leave no choice for the antenna type. 3. Is it a fully SDR, partially SDR, HF SDR with VHF/UHF analogue Superhet? Thanks in advance! 73! Linas LY2H.
Your message reaches Cambodia. 73 to you sir
Great introduction. I agree fan noise is not nice, there is a setting to increase the temp threshold before fans kick in - use at your own peril ;)
Very interested in this radio but have seen other videos showing the power output not being close to advertised. Can you do a video showing power out for each band?
Good point! I will do some tests this weekend. Thanks for watching 👍
@@TechMindsOfficial they state that the maximum power should be achieved at up to 16v ... so might not do so well at 13.1v
Nice VO track Matt, no resonances or reverb, good s/n. Thumbs up!
i think the round menu button should be switched to a turn dial for tuning, with a push function to keep the original menu function
Thanks Matt, looks a very interesting rig and being able to control it via external software is better. How stable is it on vhf using digital modes?
I am also interested about it's performance on VHF and UHF SSB.
Thanks, interesting! Wish it had a VFO knob though......
I placed an order and subsequently cancelled. The original ads they published had 2 antenna inputs. how you make it work with a single antenna input is not clear to me.
Have you ever heard of a Duplexer or a Triplexer? It’s really SIMPLE.
@@1OFGODSOWN yes lose the magic when you start attaching one external device after another. the appeal of a small self contained unit is lost - duplexer, external vfo knob, etc. etc.
Why do all the Chinese HF rigs only have low output power? The g90 is I think 30w. The radio looks potentially really good but if like myself you can only afford one HF rig you're not going to buy a low wattage radio, nobody will hear you with this rig plus the lack of a vfo knob makes tuning around a chore. Make it 100w output and give it a vfo knob and the potential market would be massively increased surely?
But a Kenwood TS-50 & you will be very pleased.I have owned Four of them and I’m looking at another one I think and I’m an ICOM MAN.
Thanks for sharing and the excellent presentation
Thanks!
Thank you!! 🙏
Opps! I was coming back to look at this and they are discontinued. Buy it when you see it!
Don’t worry, I have an excellent replacement airing on the channel real soon!
@@TechMindsOfficial Ok I'll trust it is coming and go ahead to sell the 817ND with extras. I can't really see the display much anymore.
Interesting how some knock sdr but rely on web sdrs to receive , sdr is the future for radio like it or not .
Thanks for video. An interesting rig. One of the other commenters indicated there may be issues with unacceptable harmonic levels. Has anyone got any further info?
Looking forward to seeing how to set it up and work digital modes. Seems like it will be well suited for that especially using something like HDSDR as a front end with it. 73 KM6TRZ
There are almost no videos with TXing with that radio on HF. Could you do that video with TX on SSB with audio and some digital mode?
Also with SWR metering and ATU working on HF bands. Comparing to other SWR metering devices.
Mine is in transit.
Current price is $599.
I got one too ... with all the modules installed ... hope to get it soon
I love your channel, great job. I'm the same way, I rather do how to videos and let others decide.
Thanks, looks interesting. I would like to know the physical size . A Google search didn’t help either.
I’d also like to hear if it can be connected to a Linux computer. Many of us don’t use windoze anymore.
Forget this model, look at my latest video, the Q900. Links on the video will also take you to the sellers page with dimensions. Cheers
Did you try the rf gain / att before you tried the dsp nooise reduction? The rf gain should be the first go to . Before you go to dsr noise deduction. But this is usually forgotten.
The rig looks great , but having to button press every time you want to change rf/af or vfo would be supper annoying for me . Even a mouse click is a extra step ,or backward step .
Helo mate, question - do you know if you can control this or the Q900 over LAN or not yet?? I am having issues with my HL2 and wondered if I could run this remotely.
There a way to open transmit up for out of band?
The screen, as well as the interface, seems so small.
Thank you for the video.
yes, all the other manufacturers put there in bigger boxes, so the size is really the same.
I would to see button head socket screws used on the face plate instead of the socket head cap screws. Hopefully it would be a simple remove/replace process to change them. My luck would be there is some hidden heat sink on the other side being held by a nut rather than just tapped into the case. Anyone else have such luck?
Thanks by information!
After a couple of years this first version that is that I have got, disappeared. I'm wondering if you had the opportunity of testing another firmware for this first ver. and what it's the best for changing my 1.2.2 firmware for the last one (I know that had a firmware in that you can managing with android and I'm wondering how you can connect it a external Knob wheel that is selling GUOHETOC...)
Can you make a firmware review for us that are first HS2 owners... Thanks in advanced!
I would be very interested in how well the VHF and UHF works with the radio.
It has a RJ45 Ethernet port for LAN on the back can I control this transceiver using my Mac or PC via the network?
When will they ever put GPS in a nice little SDR receiver. Thanks for the review.
Would love to see the cw decoder
Buttons are too small and no tuning dial! Yuk!
I like the w10 software. Can you configure the noise reduction, maybe with a bandpass filter you can adjust?
How is SWR significant?
Can this rig accept line level audio input (rack gear/DAW etc.) ?
FROM THE FUTURE: “Let’s look at the version 2 mic, at first I thought it was a lapel mic, but it is acually the handset. At first I didn’t think I’d like the mic, but it feels quite good between my thumb and index finger.”
Would this be the same as the Radioddity QR20 SDR Radio
Looks like it to me.
It's the same internally. Same black spaces for the nonexistent GPS and other modules. PLUS the QR20 has an internal battery.
Have you found problems with the radio as I don’t see any other videos?
Thanks for this one any way
The mic and headphone sockets look a bit naff PC like...
Does the software have any digital decode to analog capabilities? I'm not sure I'm really ready for DMR. I'll probably start with an anytone 878 ht. I'm doing good to program my baofeng UV5R ht's for our local 2M club repeaters. Thanks for the video, KG5ZEF, Ray. 73!
What's the power draw in receive mode? Their website only gives voltages, no current figures.
How about wfm broadcast reception? Can you add filters? To improve reception...
Interesting, thanks for the video
Thanks for information you share very informative..👍
How can you use that thing? Your finger covers 4 buttons at once?
Hooray for USB-C!!
What is the software used on the SDR receiver?
Can you turn the waterfall Off? I find it useless when I have a good band scope so it would annoy me if it was On so I am asking.
The radio is clearly seriously saturated during the part of the video without HDSDR. You can hear it and see it on the waterfall. It's not because the S-meter only shows S9 or less that there is no saturation of the ADC going on. Is there an ATT present in the radio? This seems like a poor design. Nice video as usual! 73'
There is an ATT but there is also an RFG and IFG which I most likely had not set correctly. I guess I’m still learning and need to fine tune the sensitivity
@@TechMindsOfficial The ATT should work, but the RFG and IFG is a control after the ADC and could not be helping here. Inserting a ATT before the radio no option for a tranceiver, wich is logical. Will there be a folow-up video of this radio?
I can't find this on the site... whats the mismatch range for the atu? Thanks and 73
More about using it with a PC, agree with using buttons, thanks.
is it pasibal to conect the HS2 whit the laptop and decode mors and rtty .... and witch program i need , ( i ame only a lisening)
Very interesting radio!
Great informative video. Thanks for that! Have you heard or tried to connect it to a computer running Linux? Did not find anything on the web so far ...
can you send this radio an I/Q stream for transmission?
Radio noise suppression sounds great. They need a remote pad vfo dial control since the didn’t add it on the front. Can I get video out for an external monitor via USB ?
Looks like a fun radio.
How is the big signal behaviour ?
Can it do 4m, 70mhz wasn't clear to me if it could.
And is there a way to use hdsdr with n1mm for contesting ?
No 4m. Probably no capable hardware. There is in the wild old unofficial firmware with 4m enabled. But not to much other info about it.
Are you the voice for the Geico gecko? :)
I have a similar version of this radio the Q900 sdr
can it be used on 10 and 11 meter bands
Does it have memory channels, offsets, and tones?
Is this basically a transmit beefed-uped hackrf?
Can you make an all frequency repeater out of this?
i an gona get me one or two of these doovers ! cledis,
This is a model that has substandard harmonics and has many complaints and criticisms in China. The brand in China is called 国赫, and the model is Q900. Seriously: It is not recommended to buy.
£650! I could buy a good 2/70 and HF TX second hand for this money. Or just buy a HackRF and have enough money left over to buy what I want. This "thing" is worth no more than £250/£300.
Thanks for the review! Looks like an interesting radio. But I'd like to get some clarification regarding the technology applied: is it a fully SDR , or is it a Dual conversion superheterodyn analogue radio with the Digital Signal Processing in the IF stage ( like, for instance the YAESU FT-891) ? Thanks! 73! Linas LY2H
Does it do 11 meters?
Does the sdr have a line in port?
How to conect to Win 10 laptop , pls
Is there 222, 902 in this radio ?
how much?
Awsome I want one
A radio without a vfo knob isn't an ham radio. More chinese radio has lack in control and display. This is no good.
My Flexradio 6600 has no VFO knob and is a very good American made ham radio.
My IC-7300 VFO knob is hardly used. I use Omni Rig and SDRPlay to do the control. I installed Radio Analog PTRX-7300 IF Interface Module in the radio to hook a RSPdx SDR radio to the computer.
I thought Ailunce was offering or going to offer a Bluetooth connected external "VFO knob", but I do not see it on their website.
@@jamescaperelliiii4620 I think it is going to happen. There is a schematic diagram on their website. Nevertheless I am building my own over Christmas based on an ESP 32.
Tell that to Flex...
Dude where are you located
5 watts just isn't going to go anywhere. I'm running my Icom IC7300 SDR HF radio at 100w. By the time you set up an amp, you will have spent more than it costs for a 100watt radio.
Same as Radioddity QR20
A sdr radio need a vfo wheel
Why? My Flex radio works well with a mouse.
@@RC-ld3cn I had two flex radio and where there was none I bought the optional one . then it's a personal opinion
The fan vents are not designed properly.
I checked the post date to see if it was from April 1. This product is a joke.
If only i could buy one it seems like i cant find them anywhere
Moonraker.eu may still have for sale.
@@TechMindsOfficial thanks for the responce they seem to do
You’re welcome!
800EUR+ wow...
Precio
looks like malamut without encoder
I'll stick to my Yaesu 7000.
No VFO wheel, no battery case, SSB on 160m at 5W? Hmm... I'm quite happy about my IC-705.
Sharing... Very informative 73
В соревнованиях трудно на нем работать.
Excuse e. Minewasanotherbrandnot this one.
Unfortunately, this radio right now is banned in China due to bad control of it’s transmit harmonic, it’s the worst one that I’ve ever seen among all kinds of Chinese DIY RIGs. Now in China, it’s sold as receiver only. Pretty interesting, right? You can also test it if you have the equipment.
This is worrying. Do you have any links to the tests please? It would be interesting to know how bad it is.
@@Steve-GM0HUU You can refer to this link: www.kechuang.org/t/86130
I get really tired of hearing how small these sdr radios are...
I prefer a larger front panel with a 2.5 inch rotary vfo knob, and traditional volume, rit etc. knobs....
I'm the opposite. I do a lot of portable POTA activations. Small size is better for me.
A Ham radio " Without " a vfo control ...... Really 🤣 .... Unless there was an external VFO control ide not touch the radio with a barge pole.
How $$$$$$
