- Creatures of Place is an insight into the wonderful world of Artist as Family: Meg Ulman, Patrick Jones, and their youngest son, Woody. Living on a 1/4-acre section in a small Australian town, Meg and Patrick have designed their property using permaculture principals.
They grow most of their own food, don't own cars and ride their bikes instead, use very little electricity, and forage food and materials from their local forest. We found their story super inspiring and we think you will too!

Start to build that way of life today.even just a few parts.grow plants in pots.try to make less waste.dont just replace furniture as a up grade only as a replacement for broken not the newest model.small changes by many make huge changes to community.

I watched this video few years back. I didn't understand it then. I became a father two years ago and then I understood. Took inspiration from these people and next year, I will go back to my village where I can spend all 7 days of the week with my family.
In this video I see a good relationship between husband and wife, father and son, human and animal and most importantly human and nature.I give 5⭐ out of 5 to this video.

This is so inspiring! I'm literally crying while watching, most people used to think that life is all about money, career and titles. But this is the real life, living simply and being one with the nature. I just bought a 2 hectares land and I'm so excited to start up and build my own farm.

I hope that you do it without using other beings. They put lovely music and charming filming. Then my heart sank when the videoing passed by the feathery prisoners... imprisoned to produce an egg a day for greedy humans. You have no idea what toll it takes on their bodies to make a baby every day. They cannot live more than 2-4 years from the toll it takes on them. And the sadness of losing a baby per day is unthinkable to people who give a damn about others. Then it pans to murdering fish. What the actual heck. Go vegan. Don´t take what is not yours.

Below the poverty line and yet their living the best out of this life.
People are really rich when connected in nature.
@ 30 thousand Australian dollars per year, and owning their home, I must consider that poverty line in Australia is set quite high... To me, poverty is what I've seen in Africa, where individuals live on less than one USD per day and have a hard time buying basic tools such as a shovel or a cooking pot.
@@stefanomoretti3664 , Africa is a large continent, with lots of land, plant and animal life. I think that a bit more thinking, planning, and ambition could relieve the poverty there. You reap what you sow.
@@sterlingprice5963 no it wouldn't. There are other interests there. Africa is and was and will be governed from outside by individuals that don't have African people best interests in mind. Africa wasn't let to grow, isn't that the people there are lazy or something. Foreign iterests in the region are more important apparently.

White South African farmers are being murdered. The S. African president has openly advocated for killing the whites there, and it is happening. The news media ignores it, social media censors people who try to talk about it.

@@forbesmag1271 What makes you think they are protein deficient? Looks like they were making cheese in the vid, and they fed ducks which I imagine probably provide them with eggs. I think they look happy and healthy - probably from having a varied diet and plenty of physical activity.

I used to live in the city before the pandemic, now we moved back to the province and have a small backyard turned into a food haven. Little by little I switched into a minimallist lifestyle. This change my life in the most wonderful way. The greatest realization that I had over this experience is that simple things makes us happy and truly LESS is more.

Sur Jeudi it’s amazing what I seen. I love to plant as well not as fur tube as you guys are. I do have baby tomatoes at home I planted and garlic and cilantro. I can plant much. But it feels good I also plant aloe Vera and make my own face cream and lotion. There so many things we can do. It’s true what you say nature it’s beautiful. Keep doing films like this I love and always showing my nephews what life out there really is like when you have your own home in the country. God bless and family

@Sur Jeudi: Yes and if parents knew what actually goes on at their local public school they would understand why their children are depressed and angry. Also many parents are so busy trying to make ends meet by using a system that works against them that they have little time for children even though they would like to spend more time with them. Other parents have already given up and have taken to medications and substances to cope with life's stresses. The children always suffer in these cases. Our current economic, medical, and food systems do not work for the average person. They work against us. I heard a saying once that went: ''The only way to win THAT game is to not play.'' If we don't ''play'' their systems then those systems will be forced to change. I've seen it happen in the food industry. Money talks as the saying goes. What the systems count on is that they work towards making change away from them very difficult and they count on people being lazy and not wanting to sacrifice to make changes. I've been around long enough to know that they are underestimating humanity's potential and willingness to sacrifice and that is their fatal mistake. Soldier on, I wish you well.
I agree, though to be fair, he's five years old. I think that's typically one of the happier ages in life.
I remember my parents taking me to see a self sufficient home on a city plot in Berkeley, CA back in the 1970's. It was amazing and so inspiring to me as a child that I wanted to live such a life at some point in my life. Now over 50 years later after working tirelessly as a nurse I am looking at my home as more of a refuge from the outside world and I am once again inspired after seeing this video to do with my home and the 1/2 acre it sits on what this inspiring couple has done.
Clever humans will always find the way.
For me this film is a good example on how get out of the trap.
There'll always be difficulties, I'm sure of that,but living that way makes you stronger and clever with each passing day.

I'm 30 and have spent the last year spending thousands of pounds and countless hours furnishing a house. I now understand why people say that the wealthy are some of the most depressed people because objects and possessions do not buy happiness. I have sold nearly all of my things and have decided to travel the world owning only what I can carry on a bicycle. I will settle when I have a reason to do so. Living a life such as this would give me such a reason.
This is where my mind has been for years. Often we become slaves to our possessions. I want experiences rather than things...a truly beautiful life

Atm I'm trying to convince my s.o to let's sell our home and buy a piece of land somewhere, maybe up north or even Canada, so we can have livestock, grow our own food in green houses yo extend our growing season and live simply, he complains that we're too old to do it ourselves, ugh! Sometimes he makes up so many excuses, that I actually think he has a little book full of them. Lol.
What these people are saying is incredibly powerful. I suffer with anxiety and so do many of the people I know. I wonder if those anxieties would completely dissapear if we empowered ourselves with knowledge and became as resilient as these people.
Hey yes, I (Patrick from the film) suffered quite severe anxiety in my 20s and early 30s due to the state of the world and everything else (including being anxious about having anxiety in the first place), then I started reading and then practicing permaculture. I suffer no anxiety theses days, although I do have the occasional 'bad' day. That's just life. But I don't have debilitating anxiety like I used to.
Our family are autistic and suffer various forms of social anxiety and difficulties, sensory overload and it's incredibly debilitating. I believe this lifestyle would help us so much but have no idea where to begin.

Ministry Of Home just start with small things like buy a couple of pots & soil & seeds of ur favorite herb or vegetable & plant it on your porch or windowsill or in ur backyard if you have one. Also AMAZON HAS A COUNTERTOP COMPOSTER that is $22.00 right now. (Aug 2018) You can put ur food scraps from cooking in it!. & then use the compost in a pot or small front garden or backyard garden. That is little start. Hope it helps. Also my grandmother always had me plant marigolds (little orange or yellow flowers) flies don't like the smell. Good for porches, near doors or windowsills! Easy annuals to start from seed & when they die, u keep the seeds until the next spring. Plant the black side of seed down.
@@kimberlynhughes3658 I really agree with you. people may not be able to take bigs steps like this family, but the small steps really do help. I lived in a tiny New York City apartment for 15 years and I always needed something alive and green . I bought a coconut plant and a white bird of paradise plant from Ikea and that started my love of plants. At work people started bringing me plants because I could get them healthy. And I found I began to feel better. Less stressed out. This world doesn't allow us to slow down and rest our minds and bodies. We weren't meant to live in constant pressure. Gardening , connecting with nature does some amazing things. I wish you all the best.
I'm in awe of how much I have learned from this beautiful family. I find so many similarities between us though we live in different faraway lands. I'm from Nairobi, Kenya and I told my sister the other I cant wait to move to the countryside and start sustainable living on farmland. This is the real life and it's fulfilling. I left the corporate jobs during the pandemic and returned to work in the family farm. Never looked back. Simple life with the soil and animals but highly fulfilling. Even the sweat and tiredness are some kind of enjoyable.

Yes, I can. Simply because I grew up in a similar set-up. No running water, no electricity, we grew our own food, foraged, explored and read a lot (well, some of us did). It was hard work sometimes but also gave us lots of freedom and skills for life.

He might have chosen to leave this lifestyle (and good on him and his parents, because that's a reflection of his individual freedom and respect for his choices) but equally he might not have wanted to be filmed. My great grandparents lived this life and survived the great depression in relative comfort. Their farm is now over 100 years old!

Yes they were living under a rock but you could say the same about the entire community it was not perfect living but they were happy living in a tiny village surrounded by friends and family with relatively primitive technology when compared to their urban counterparts

I think it's very rare when in a couple both have such a similar worldview that they both choose the same direction to go. Many times one of two is dragged by the other, he/she isn't fully content with what the other wishes.
This is one of those rare cases, I feel. And I'm very happy for such couples, good for you!

I'm in my early 40's and this is how I want to live my life. I'm finally out of the city and now I need to buy some land build a tiny home and start living of the land.

FYI. You can do this on a tiny urban lot. In fact, it's often easier since there is much more in walking or biking distance and land is cheap. I know: I've been living a simple life and growing a ton of food on postage-stamp-sized lots for decades.

It's like when you're on vacation in Nature. You HAVE TIME to think, to feel, to spend with those you love, to look WITHIN instead of always having your Attention OUTSIDE, busy, busy. And you learn to love a sunset, seeing how plants grow day by day, the rain, the sunshine, the fresh air, the quiet company of your partner, the healthy physical work, the peace in your heart.

I read these guys' book, The Art of Free Travel, about a year ago and I have been obsessed since. The way this family lives, the principles they follow, I just completely admire them. Especially in a society where everything about the environment seems a bit bleak, with global warming and climate change and that, this video and this family gives me so much hope for the future. As a teenager, it gets me so excited for my future :)

I can correlate as I'm trying every bit to keep my niece and nephew attached to nature and away from gadgets. My nephew is 2 and his sister is 8. They know organic gardening more than any kids of their age.

@@Carmen-rz9hl through actions. I hand him stuffs and direct him to use it the way I use them. He's a very bright child. Picks up really fast. I place ashes, neem water, etc on the ground within his reach and ask him to pour on the plants. He does all. :) Hope this helps.

I met this family while cycling in Australia, they were just about to finish a circumnavigation of the continent on bikes.
Now, a few years later, I feel how serious the situation is that the planet is in.
They are living the way I now also want to live. Less stuff, more meaning.

Maby a lot of people would think this is crazy, but if I would live next door I would team up sharing my land growing stuff. And if more and more would do that It should work. I remember my grandparents had a greenhouse for commercial use and a big yard with all kinda fruit and veggies. It was everyday work but I remember it as a fun time building up for the whole family make u proud as a kid.
It means no matter how much we progress we have to return back to old roots for peace and happiness

This is awesome! We live on a few acres and are working hard to achieve a similar lifestyle. We are coastal SA so our conditions are so extremely harsh with extreme temperatures and limestone as our earth. We have planted over 200 trees and hoping to create a micro climate. This family is so inspiring. Where we live we will never have a garden like that but we are working on it :) . There is so much to be said for a simple lifestyle.

I’m an American living in Japan at the moment. My wife and baby are planning on moving back this year and our goal is to live this kind of lifestyle. My family is from CA and it seems like it’d be tough to live like this in a lot of places due to laws and regulations. For example, I doubt that in a 1/4 acre home you’d be allowed to keep bees. My goal is to find a place where we’d be able to live freely like this without having to get permits for every little thing you want to do.
turtlenecks No matter where you live in the world, there will be government regs - key is to begin small and transition as you learn what's in / what's not. I think beekeeping in particular is becoming more and more common (and more regulated) - but loads of intel on the web to learn what you'll need to be mindful of when you begin. The couple in the video ACHIEVED this lifestyle, it wasn't a backward move, or without work -- they strictly changed their goal posts first -- and then began making daily decisions that would lead them closer! Hubby and I live in Japan at present too (isn't it definingly magnificent) and are looking to build our permaculture paradise upon our repatriation to Oz. One tomato at a time.
Cynthia Copeland I agree with your overall sentiment that it takes hard work to achieve a lifestyle similar to this couple but government regulations do get in the way depending on where you live and obviously it’s not the same everywhere. I don’t know where you live in Japan but where I live in the countryside, I could easily execute a similar lifestyle without all the hassle of the government getting in the way. That includes eco-building, water harvesting and the list goes on.
There are many, many homesteading families. Check CZcams and facebook to see if there are any gatherings in your area of just to follow some of the homesteading families.
About ten years ago my wife , son and I were moving along the path you're currently on. Then out from left field came illness, my wife was diagnosed with cancer and three years later I was diagnosed with a major heart condition. Our food forest and veg production stopped almost overnight. My wife is still able to work, so we have an income coming in, which we are thankful for. We are also medieval re-enactors. What we have learned from our experience is that to be really self-sufficient and sustainable in the long term in the past, families had to belong to a village community, so if one or two members suffered from illness of injury the village/extended family came around them and looked after them. We didn't take this into account and were blindsided by illness. We didn't plan for this eventuality, our family is spread across Australia and we didn't have time to cultivate a heap of like minded friends who could come around us and help us in our time of need, as we would have done for them.Now our vege garden is barren and our food forest, where I used to collect food each morning for breakfast hardly produces anything, as all I can now do is weed it and keep it watered, in our heat wave summers. Please learn from our experience. While you have your health prepare in some way for the time when you won't, because you won't always be able to work as hard as you do now. What you are doing brings back fond memories when I sit in the sun on the deck in winter and remember what it used to be like. You are inspirational, but please prepare and don't go down the road we have been forced to travel All the best. Royce and Karen.

I have a couple of questions for you.
Do you think it is someone's right if it is their desire to make an income and be successful? (It may sound like a stupid question, no sarcasm intended.)
If you do, who will give the Free Health Care, Pay for the very expensive education to become a Doctor. (Who will not be paid for their Hard work, because people have a right to their service?)
And, I'm asking you Not to put that $$$ burden on the people who have become successful through hard work, even if it's inherited from someone else's Hard Work.

Thanks for the advice, I'm 20 I plan to move away from all the hustle... I feel like this kind of life is rich and better than the clock like working of modern society.
I had planned to work save up and get a land and house and be self sufficient.
Now I should take consideration for saving up to what happens when I'm sick as well. I have family but I don't think they'd like this decision.
@@christophersleight19 Hi, id like to answer as a European, we are happy that our taxes go toward free healthcare and education, because we know that even though most people have the desire to be succesful and productive member of society, as you mention, some illnesses or conditions may cost way more to treat than one can afford. And we like to know that everyone around us has their basic needs met, be it our mother, neighbour, every citizen. We can enjoy our lives more and not see life or our careers as a fight for survival. Ive lived in many parts of the world and seen many different systems, many ways of living and they all seem to work one way or another.

This family including the children have a far better life than many other people that all the modern conveniences. I grew up cooking on an Everhot woodstove. My baked bread in the Everhot woodstove for a years when I was a child. I can remember my mum standing in our small kitchen on a hot 40 degree day, and she was 9 months pregnant cooking bread, and standing infront of the hot Everhot stove. We also raised small chicks in the winter time in the small kitchen in box in the kitchen.
Love people like this. Watching this makes me excited for all the plants I’ve planted on my property the last two yrs. I’m amazed myself how much I have crammed onto my 2/3 acre

I agree. Even the church, which ought to have a family, in Christ mentality, can take in the societal approach. That is sad. But the hope is in having a right worldview because of God's rich mercy & grace.
We can all learn to look the other way when it comes to society, but the true toxin in our communities, is the system, we all know that politicians and their system, are parasites, we are at fault when we support them and don't stand up to their all mighty "brain-washing" strategies to keep us all thinking that we need them, but no, we don't,, they are the ones who need us, same goes for churches and religions, if we are god's believers or simply atheists, it is obvious we do not need a church to feel god or his creation around us, stop supporting politicians and churches, and you will see what real freedom feels like!

When its first moccasin were made (moccasin is both singular and plural), a hole was cut in each sole, so that the child would always have direct contact with the earth and its energy and spirit. These are things that you should think about. If you don’t help your children to see, respect, honor and be grounded in the natural world, they could grow up to be. Rudy Giuliani or a Donald Trump. God forbid. But pursuing money and power instead of living as a member of a caring community that wants to make the world better and healthier...that is how society destroys what’s good and persecuted or exploits others in the world.

Good point. Positive - Look what you can and be excited, but slow and steady wins the race.
I'm currently building my tiny house, and everything is halted because of this pandemic. My family owns a small portion of land I can use to grow vegetables and fruits. I am also phasing into this life, avoiding any materialistic pursuit, and focusing on sustainable subsistence. I have taught myself some skills I could use to earn for a living, which is also put to a halt because of the pandemic. Watching these kindred spirits is very inspiring.
