In this episode, I remove everything from the block, labeling each piece as they come off. This was way more footage than I thought there was going to be so I made this into an episode of its own.

Okay, okay I know it's late. I had to take a trip to the UK so I'm a week behind. But you can expect the videos to pick up big time very soon. I have a video ready for the second channel so head over and sub with the bell on! The name of the channel is going to change so don't get confused. I'm excited to have two channels going, anything none car-related will be going on the second channel. The machine shop I am using is pretty busy, so I might restore some of the other parts in the meantime to keep the videos coming. Enjoy!
Restore It Now will you be restoring all these parts, including bolts. Or if they are too damaged will you just get new ones?
What is your second channel?
@@maxhilton6819 Steve,s Workshop.Go to the restoreit home area and there is a heading 'channels' click on that and it is listed. no content yet
I really admire what you're doing ... keep it up. Of course, for a tough job like this, at some point you're going to need a guy with tattoos to help ...
I had a question; way are you now restoring this bmw instead of your other bmw?
Crankshaft bolt 30NM, oil filter 160NM.
Whoever serviced this engine was a genius.
Oil filters are quite often hard to remove despite being tightened by hand at the service.
Seems perfectly normal to me.
Can't wait for part 3.
Me to
I appreciate the labeling of the parts, for those of us who have some idea of what's going on but aren't complete gearheads lol.
Im glad you are sending the Block and Head out for professional cleaning and machining.
Looking at you doing this makes me want to pull apart the one I have in my garage...
Do it!
@@RestoreIt do it
do it
Dont do it
Do it tonight.👍
Anyone else love the satisfying sound of a bolt being broke loose after being tightly threaded for 10 years or more... just me ok
That must be the EASIEST crankshaft bolt ever!!
that what i was also wonder...When it need 410Nm torgue...
Whoever had this engine before me did some really stupid things to it, so I'm certain this was them haha.
MAD MIKE I tighten with the third dot on the air gun, never bailed on me. And i still got it of
Restore It Well some of us have to be lucky, anyway awesome video mate!
My thoughts exactly. Almost fell off my chair when i saw that. Then the hammer on the harmonic balancer made me cringe a bit
Great job.
Some activties require extra hands, glad you got one. The machinery shop does all the cleaning needed, but you helped them thats thoughtful of you.
I love BMW's, but i dont own one , one day when i get one, im gonna watch your videos ten times a day.
Keep up your good work. You sir ,are an inspiration for many people.
Thank you for such kind words, Shapoor, Its people like yourself that keep me motivated to keep going.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to write a comment like this. Means a lot.
Hey, Steve! You're living your dream! Life is great--doing what you love in a shop you built from nothing! Your courage and determination is paying off. Sweet! You make us all want to venture out and live our dreams. So glad you can start posting more often. Take care, my friend.
Hey Gary! You just reminded me I need to reply to you! Life is so hectic at the moment, but you're right this is my dream. Thanks for the kind words as always Gary, means a lot.
The simplicity of this engine is unique. It is a pity that there will no longer be such motor constructions.
Couldn't agree more.
Agree. Now you plenty of plastic parts even inside the engine!
@john jay only scary if you dont maintain the car properly. If this is scary I wonder what other non scary engine materials you might be thinking of. Are Glock making a plastic one these days?
yesssss i've found you recently and I bing watched your previous videos . i'm already in love with the series . cant wait to see the final product
Thanks, Ali! Good to have on you along for the ride.
I am 15 and I like your videos
Good to know :) glad you like them.
@@RestoreIt big fan since I was 14
good on you for your interest and desire to learn
People , hand tight this type of oil filters please.
Thank you
That also happens when you don't put oil onto the o-rings on the oil filters, but that's mostly on trucks and other big engines. Most people, as you say, uses tools to tighten the oil filters on cars for some reason.
Even with just hand-tightening filters onto these engines, i've found you still need tools to remove- am guessing heat from nearby manifold causes this.
Love this M20 engine, i have 2 of them 1 boosted 450 HP and 1 natural aspirated, never had problem, love IT
Wow! Look at all those little projects! Can’t wait!
It's restoration heaven!
This is so fun to watch. Thank you for naming the parts as you go and taking the time to record/upload this.
I was just thinking to myself that you hadnt uploaded in about a decade. Cant wait to watch it.
It kills me inside not uploading. I am now on a mission to get close to posting every day across all of my channels (more channels coming also). Enjoy it King :)
@@RestoreIt It did not disappoint! Thanks for sharing the work you do with us.
Loved watching this! I have an E30 (in the picture) and someone is keeping my old knackered M20 engine block so one day I'd love to restore it and the rest of the engine. Your video makes that more realistic!
Been patiently waiting for this video upload and glad you had a safe trip to UK.
Looking forward to the build, thumb up so far.
I have never seen one of these engines that needed rebuilding. Mine has 500,000 miles on it and still runs great. I sold it to a friend that still drivers it regularly. It never had an alternator, Power Steering pump, or Clutch either. Transmission has never been removed from the car. LOL. They last an absolute lifetime.
Seeing all the parts on the floor at the end and knowing all the goods that are going to happen to them... I cannot wait for part 03 !!
Great video, like always !
Just a tip @10:16, get yourself a power bar to loosen head bolts. A ratchet is not designed to loosen bolts torqued to that spec & will eventually fail.
Same for the mains & big ends...
It will also reduce the stress on your arms, wrists etc...
If there is 1 thing I hate with my mechanical work, its to battle.
Good work so far
This thing in the sump you thought was an oil filter - it's actually an oil pressure relief valve
I had the thermostat, timing belts, pulleys and water pump replaced on my E39 520i about 10 years ago for 1000 USD / 800 Pounds including parts and labour. It must have been quite the good price considering how much work it is.
Thanks for the video and keep up the great work!
Great insightful and no corny repetition music playing.. such a pleasure to just watch and enjoy really 💯😌
Absolutely LOVE your videos!! Can’t wait to see everything to come :)
Since I'm watching your videos I started developing an urge to just follow the same steps you do on my own car... It seems so easy, even though I know it isn't! And the precision and attention to details you have... it is insane :D Can't wait for the next video!
This is going to be a fascinating series. Brilliant.
Thanks, Richard, always good to see you here!
Heck yeah, new episode
Brilliant videos man! love the annotations and all
So, You already found you a good machine shop in Spain. I bet you are enjoying the weather in your new digs!
I love these videos, I miss my e30
some of the best content on youtube
Thank you, manofsheerawsomness, that means a lot.
Nice I've Been Waiting For This Great Video Brother!!
The wait was worth it, welcome Bro you make me so happy with your videos.
That's a lot of work, nice job so far, can't wait to see it all done!
I know nothing about cars but I just love watching your videos. Thanks.
Love it Steve! the montage at the end was like the exploded view diagrams in the very old Haynes Manuals I used to read as a child. You know, the ones with the drawings rather than the photos. Can't wait to see you getting through it. It will be like new when finished. You might as well knock out the frost plugs and replace them while you're at it mate.
Exciting! Can't wait to see the next order of business.
The amazing complexity of an engine like this...
True. And this is one of the most basic 6 cylinders out there!
Its beautiful.
Can you imagine the really complex engines...@@RestoreIt
Nice job, keep up the great videos.
This is the best CZcams & Chill channel! Literally eating snacks and stuff while watching!
I rebuilt a Chevrolet Truck engine once, with my bother-in-law. When we put it back together, there were two bolts left over that we couldn't account for where they went. It drove us crazy. The engine ran fine and we tossed them into a jar hoping we'd figure it out later. When I sold the truck a few years later, I passed along the two bolts with it.
yesssss been waiting for this one!
the best thing today happened
Excellent restoration 👍 very good
Thanks!!!! been waiting for this!!!
Most wanted video in the world !!!!
Sooo crazy episode
Can't wait for next episode
Don't be late please
loving the content, great work!
Great work!
So happy I found your channel really nice work young man thank you for your videos
Awesome job!
Amazing thanks for the inspiration. I started taking my project car apart. And cleaning and making everything look new again!
Thanks for watching Isai and good to hear you're getting stuck in.
Shoutout from Los Angeles, California
Yeeeeyyyy...new episode
Good luck bro..cant wait part 3👍
Thank you, Alcyone!
Nice to watch! Well done! I will keep following
My Best CZcams Channel 👌👌
Thank you, Rasheed, means a lot.
*Just sooooo cool !!! 😁👍*
Finally the engine🙏
Never clicked so fast in my life
next episode next week? cant wait man! awesome job!
Waaaaawww! Good luck to rebuild it! Amazing!!
Impressive work! Keep it up!
Faster faster faster! Don't sleep don't eat, work work work!
Insanity alert! Having no sleep can spell disaster you need to plan carefull moves or else something would break like doing a restoration of a engine if you are so drowsy and made one false move then you know what happens next so please think and I know it's a humorous joke but I think it's not funny to me
Nathan Anderson I can’t remember asking about your opinion tho
Holy hell nice work
Good job, nice to watch these videos!
Love your content! Keep up the good videos!
Wow all parts are laid down on floor. Looks great 👩🔧👍
So satisfying isn't it.
Best channel of CZcams!! I am a brazilian guy and like so much your videos because you show step by step of the works. And, of course, restore only awesome cars (BMW E30).
My english isn't so good, sorry.
Great work! I'm amazed how many parts look exactly the same on my M21 diesel.
You're dedicated! Looking forward to more videos!
The part you identified as the "Bearing cover" over the oil pump drive gear is actually a plug for the hole the distributor occupied on engines before Motronic controls that started with the E30.
The best video about engine... 👍👍👍
Bro... Really amazing, like always
Can't wait to see this engine restored 100%
Engines are definitely more complicated than the carburettor ones I last worked on, massive improvement in power and emissions though with turbocharger and EFI etc.
Love the engineering of any engine though.
Thanks for sharing and best regards from a warm Uak
Respect for laying out all the engine parts, must have taken ages.
So satisfying, thanks for doing my night...
The Ikea M20 rebuild . Sweet as mate 👍
Thank you for doing this sir
An extremely easy tear down. I was surprised that you didn't break any bolts. Looks like you need some tools you don't have. I would recommend a set of "lady slippers". It's amazing how they're put together on an assembly line.
Really good job
best vídeo ever, wainting for the new one.
6:10 😂 "story of my life" I was crying at that point. I feel your pain, while I doing my e46 M3
Saved me again =) thanks =)
Wow, all the bearings have almost no wear. I can't even believe it. With how dark that engine looks I figured they'd be trashed. Btw, never store a crank shaft horizontally--could introduce warp. Machine shops always store them standing.
Invest in getting breaker bar(s) , saves your ratchet from getting wrecked & gives you more leverage 👍🔧
Looking forward to the next video with excitement. Even my 2-year-old son watched without blinking 😂😂
Legendary videos!!!
Finaly!
Outstanding that 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
You give me motivation to one day try out a rebuild on a 1.8t. Good luck!
Nice job man 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you, Meglio!
Dont know why.. but i love the sound the bolt makes just as it releases.. «SNAP»
The head bolts must be losen from outside to inside same with the crank ones
Not on this engine or M5x engines either
I can't wait to see you tear assing around in this car when it is finished! :)🇬🇷😀☮️
Me either! Thanks, Christopher
Классное видео, спасибо. Приятно наблюдать за процессом .
very good job
Wow the M20 is such a simple engine....I think I am going to take mine apart now!
