  • "A short documentary with the idea that people will realise how damaging loneliness really is. In the summer of 2012 we found a village in Romania, a beautiful place, which at this moment is populated by only one souL. An old lady who refused to leave her home behind and go with the rest of the village. We went there on a sunny day and we found a deserted village. We were sorounded by abandoned houses and silence. Total silence. But in one of the houses we were shocked to discover this old lady, mutilated by the loneliness, almost an animal with poor or no judgement at all remained, living among other animals.
We really hope you'll like this video and realise how important is to have someone in your life who is there for you."

I wish I had half the conviction she has! Man! My grandma was like this too. Lived alone in a small town for about 20 years. She had a tough time getting used to the city. Passed away three years after she moved! I think this documentary is highly biased. The woman has seen much life and she is not scared of being alone. I think we have a lot to learn from her.
    Very inspiring. Thanks for sharing.

This documentary is NOTHING like the written description. This woman seems FAR from damaged. She seems strong and admirable. She is not "almost an animal" and her judgment seems just fine. Moreover she seems to have a whole bunch of family who she keeps up with somehow from a distance. What in hell is the description all about, a completely different movie? This would have been fascinating enough just as the story of an old lady who refused to leave her home when others all did...there are many such older people who want to stay in the place where their memories are and it would have been much more interesting to focus on that rather than try to make her out to be some lonely old mental case which she most definitely IS NOT. You could probably find lonelier old people living in the middle of bustling cities than this person is.

Relationships can be overrated at times.

There is a vast difference between loneliness and aloneness.
Many people are lonely in some relationships.

Clearly the film-maker is an extrovert and so yeah he would think being alone would be horrible. Extroverts energize from being around people. An introvert would think this is a paradise. She is sad because she sees her way of life dying and no one is there to continue it. That is the true tragedy of this film, not that she is alone. She inspires hope in me and I only wish I could meet her.

She knows what she wants: does not want to leave, she wants to be in the only place she can call home, and she wants to die where she belongs and where memories are. My impression is that she is alone but not lonely. I was hurt though thinking that she may get ill soon and won't have anybody to take care of her.

A beautiful, simple and profound documentary, both personal and universal. We are hyper-social in our nature and to a great extent have no separate existence outside of our relationships. This beautiful woman, who personifies the dignity and strength that the best of us are capable of, tells the story of a world in constant upheaval. Families and communities are being undermined and fractured by the forces of war and economic turmoil. In the end, it is our relationships to each other and to the land that counts and that is most fundamental to our humanness. Always has been, and always will be. Materialism, greed and a world-wide economic system that converts living systems into dead matter must end, or we will. God Bless this lovely human soul.

She has her own "Germany" where she is. It is her choice. It doesn't mean she is lonely and doesn't mean she is unhappy where she is. She may be alone, the way you see that there is no other physical person living with her. Give her some dignity for being a strong woman living by herself. I bet whoever wrote the description of this short film couldn't stand that situation had he/she been in that circumstance. She is not almost an animal. That assumption is only in your mind. What kind of gratitude is that description who put in here after she spent time who grant you that interview? Perhaps you would find it in your heart to re-write that description. I honor her dignity and I know I'm not the only one thinking and feeling this way among those who watched this film. But thank you for sharing.

It doesn't make sense to me that this is supposed to be a sad video. How is it sad? I think she is a very successful person, to be able to live that long and by herself. That is one tough lady. She isn't "mutilated" by loneliness, she is just old, what do you expect? When she said the village is 400 years old, I thought, "well where did she live before the village was built?". She is like a hundred and doing better than I would do living alone, and I am a relatively young man. It's not sad, it is unique and interesting, and quite remarkable, but sad? Come on.

    • @YooTuba
      @YooTuba Před 8 lety +8

+fnog9 Not to mention that a LOT of old people are living in relative isolation because many of their family and friends have either died or moved away. It doesn't matter if they live in the middle of a city with neighbors and such, it's still not the same as seeing your brothers, sisters and old friends. Yet they are not necessarily "mutilated" by loneliness nor are they living like "animals" with "no judgment". Losing loved ones is part of aging - the longer you live the more losses you have to live through.

I saw a brave, admirable woman, who we should all give thanks to for setting an example to this modern world that´s going down the plug hole. I think the only mutilated person involved is the idiot who wrote the description of the film, who can only see in this woman a poor, lonely soul. That is the saddest thing about the film: the incapacity to appreciate honour when it stares you in the face.

This was a beautiful video, thank you. I have met several old Saxon women who were the last Saxons in their village and who had similar personalities. Of course, there usually were many Romanians still living around them. I can imagine this woman's loneliness but she carries on in spite of it. I think she is sadder about the demise of her village than about her personal situation. It seems as if she is sustained by her memories of a happier past. I think she shows a lot of dignity. I don't think she is crazy, she just looks resigned to her situation. The Saxon villagers were proud to be hard workers but their schooling was limited. The Saxons who I met in Germany, the ones who had left their villages and emigrated to Germany, still went on and on about how hard they worked in Germany compared to the other Germans. If the filmmakers were expecting her to expound on the meaning of life (as Romanian intellectuals often seem to do), they came to the wrong place. But none of this takes anything away from this important documentary film about a woman and her life.

solitude and loneliness are two different experiences; this woman appears to prefer solitude and by that does not mind the experience of what we perceive as loneliness. Loneliness is when someone feels negatively about it, whereasas being in solitude is when someone does not feel negatively about it.
off course there are repercussions for being in solitude and isolation from humans...but it depends on what experience we ascribe to the state that we are in. Loneliness can occur also amongst crowds/interpersonal relationship. So it shows the meaning we attach to our experience to the state we are in.

87 and still working? Pretty much totally self-sufficient? Remarkably clear-minded and still fully comprehensible despite rarely talking to others? But yet the video description says things like her judgement is gone and she's barely above animal level. The major spelling/grammatical errors at the end confirm that the producer is human, too, and clearly has his own biases. Silence and aloneness isn't necessarily some terrible thing. Most seniors stand to learn a thing or two from her. Heck, pretty much anyone for that matter.

The last quote from Mark is true, not for that old lady but for us, the city people. We've lost our connections with the nature, ultimately with the Divinity Itself. Are we really happy with our kind of living? She hasn't lived for nothing, we have.

I believe your title should be changed to "Scars of being lonely" This is my comment to the video before yours, "The Philosophy of Solitude, from Boethius to Thoreau " "...It's amazing how solitude sometimes being described as an achievable state, a relation to society or an esteemed, prerequisite training stage of a higher spiritual existence. A dialogue in own thinking is not in solitude, it's just mental activities done alone. Solitude is basic to being , although not to too many of humans, as necessary as sunshine, open space, clean air ,water and rest. If not exist in solitude, beings that prefer that total aloneness yet complete immersion will suffocate, being smoldered. Just like without air, space, water and sunshine. It's a must, the common denominator is just the appearance of their yearnings. Thanks for posting." Although all existence are sacred, there're differences in being physical-oriented, without choices, primitive, instincts-driven, powerless and pitiful. Solitude is different than solitary confinement, one is a chosen state almost by all saints, philosophers, sages, writers, painters, artists and poets while scars denotes being hurt, being done to and hopeless, it is further from this preferred state. Read Virginia Woolf, she defined solitude in the most beautiful way.

I agree with you, atticusFinch; the old woman hardly displays behavior which could be viewed animalistic. She is communicative, still cares about her appearance, has great recall regarding her family members and their whereabouts, etc. She also takes care of small live stock, like chickens. She certainly does not live like an animal. Did this [partially] self-imposed isolation harm her in any way? Perhaps so.. psychologically. But then again, show me the person without sorrow.

I hope this beautiful strong lady is still doing alright...and if she left us ,she died in peace just where she wanted. It is appalling the manner Benny Cosma sees her...she had a good life before the revolution of 1989 which she describes it as "the war" , then everything declined ,people left the village...she was indeed strong and independent and content with the life she was leading. Hopefully B&A Cosma have managed to improve their "cinematographic" skills since this short documentary...managed to find Beny on Facebook..Beny Cosma lives in Stuttgart Germany.

She maybe alone but I don't think she is mutilated. She is a strong woman. Reminds me of my granny who doesn't want to leave her home & pets in the farm to live with us in the city. We could live with people around us but if it is not what makes us happy then it is useless. We could live in a place full of people but if we don't have connections, I might as well live alone. This is a nice story, but the description is sad & fucked up. On the contrary the woman seems to love her place. She is smiling except when some events reminds her of her loved ones. God bless you. If I live near you I would surely pay you a visit & bring you food. ❤️

She said that her husband died 23 years ago. She goes on to say that they were married from 1949 to 1964 when he got sick and died. If he died in 1964, and she said that was 23 years ago, this film would have to have been from 1987. Maybe she has dementia or just very forgetful, but the math doesn't add up. I guess being deprived of stimulation from human contact affects everything. I've been so bad for this lady. I want to get on a plane and just go spend a week there just to hang out with her, play backgammon or something. So sad.

Ultimately we are all we have. All relationships are artificial. Man made. We are addicted to these relationships and think we cannot live without these so called relationships with friends and family. It would be nice to have someone but don't make it a condition. If it does not happen , just accept your aloneness.

I have to add to the others' comments here. This This documentary, by Bena Cosma, is the opposite of his description here and in the closing comments. This man is a troubled soul, and projecting his depression and sadness and troubled mind onto this woman. "almost an animal with poor or no judgement at all remained, living among other animals." This is 100% false crazy talk. She is none of these, except for living with other animals. Such as a dog and kitty cat. That's called normal, even with other humans around. She obviously gets some sort of supplies that are probably not airdropped in. Do you think she would be better at the end of her life in a city? Watch the video and judge him and her for yourself. It is her or this Beny Cosma who lacks judgment, is scarred, and who has a mutilated mind. Ridiculous.

The poem at the end is really nice, I don't know what all these people's problems are in the comments. They are afraid of looking at the torment of the isolation and jealousy, they don't know what it's like to actually sacrifice yourself, they just exonerate whore society. The love which I have sought to invest myself in, in patience, loneliness, devotion, and the way these whores of society have destroyed it is a rape so far beyond any other. My life mattered, and continues to matter, and the love that has been destroyed by people who collect it and throw it away is beyond all forgiveness and is something which can never be made right. I contemplate how it is I can even go on living, what the greedy have done is so far beyond murder or any other crime they commonly condemn. My hatred for the world is unimaginable, my torment is beyond comprehension. You can't just tell me that what I'm feeling is not there and doesn't matter. I will not excuse all these comments written by people who are too afraid to confront our unbelievably wrong whore society, You all just allow it to be continued to be socially accepted and taken for granted.

in short, people are too shallow and scared to look at their own true feelings about solitude. So they try to write it off, instead. make it sound pretty. This is not a crime which I am willing to forgive, because they exonerate whore society in the process of their own self-ignorance.
