I really enjoyed People Collide. It was so easy for me to fall into the impossibility for some reason. Beautifully written. I thought the way Kate Briggs brought in Tom Jones, by Fielding, was brilliant.

yes i was skeptical about people collide at first but what a pleasant surprise that i enjoyed it so much!! and yes i feel like the tom jones thing could’ve made the whole thing fall apart but briggs made it work

Could you send some of that sunshine over to wet windy darkest Lancashire England! Best wishes with what you choose to read. I hope you get some great stories. I'm currently up to page 805 with the Count of Monte Cristo. Still got some way to go. Happy reading.

I feel similarly with Ali Smith. Her writing is always excellent but some of her books are much stronger than others. I've only read the first two of the seasonal but have heard the quartet is sort of weak compared to some of her other writing. I really liked How to Be Both. The structure is fascinating and feels much different from the quartet. There is a bit of almost magical realism to it - Italo Calvino vibes (or maybe that's just because it takes place in Italy 🙃). All to say if you like her writing but not the stories you've encountered so far, maybe give another of her stand alones a shot!

ooooh okay i do have how to be both on my tbr shelf!! that’s good to know that it’s a bit different, not sure when i’ll be ready to pick up another one of her books but i won’t sell it to the used book store like i was contemplating doing 😂

I read a lot of poetry in April, so there weren't that many novels I loved. But one I would definitely recommend is In Defence of the Act by Effie Black, which I think is great.
Unfortunately I bailed on Martyr by Kaveh Akbar. The writing is good, but I found it a bit too detailed in unnecessary places. And the story was a bit too much of a slog and disjointed for me. Which is a shame, because it is definitely a very ambitious novel, with a topic I'm absolutely interested in. There is a chance that it was just not the right time for me to finish it, since I only picked it up because of the hype.

i haven’t heard of the effie black, i’ll have to check it out!! i’ve been meaning to put a library hold on martyr but i haven’t gotten to it yet. hopefully if you return to it later on it’ll work better for you!!
