- Rare clip of an early Madness television appearance...their first, according to a very trusted member of the band although on further investigation (with thanks to those of you commenting below) it seems to be from either 16th or 20th November, just before they set off on their first US tour. Over their career of 40+ years, it is one of only two occasions when Suggs has not performed with the band. See www.madnessontv.com for further details. Apologies for the poor quality and short length of this clip - it's the only one I've ever been able to track down.

I've been looking for this for years, I can remember watching it at the time and Mick Robertson interviewing Chaz and asking about his suit.
A few people seem to remember this appearance. Thanks for the extra bit of info
Amazing. Haven’t seen it since the day. x
Thank you Mr Wheeze !❤️🤘
Going from the evidence that has been posted it would appear this was recored in November 1979, making it the band’s 3rd tv appearance, remember they performed The Prince twice on TOTPs. The first TOTP appearance would have been filmed on the 4/5 September 1979 and aired on the 6th. Mark Bedford (youngest member) had only just turned 18 in the August of 1979 and Chris (eldest member) had just turned 23 when they made their 1st TOTPs appearance.
September 1979 Ages:
Chris 23
Lee 21
Mike 21
Carl 20
Woody 18
Suggs 18
Mark 18
That's right, 16th or 20th November as in the description...most likely 16th. Sadly, both of those episodes have been long wiped
They were all highest kites
I remember they also played Swan Lake at the end of the programme, but foot think it could've been their 1st TV appearance,as I remember Carl being interviewed by Mick Robertson about the trouble on The 2 Tone Tour, which means they would have already been on TOTP doing The Prince
Many thanks for that Chris, great to have that info; someone else who'd seen it told me there an interview too with some of the kids making comments. With ITV on strike for over 2 months from August, it's hard to see how they'd filmed this before Top of the Pops. Also, I know they'd used the "nutty train" at the odd early gig but it wouldn't have been widely seen until the "One Step Beyond" video. Your namesake from the band (the reliable one when it comes to facts) was pretty adamant that this was their first TV appearance.
When were they on Top of the Pops with The Prince? The single was released in August so they would've probably been on mid August to early October.
Also The 2 Tone Tour didn't start until October 19th and in the Magpie interview Carl is asked about the trouble with skinheads they were having,(I remember Carl pointing to some skinheads in the audience and saying it was down to kids like them),so I think Chris Foreman may have got his dates wrong.
I have a vivid memory of seeing them Magpie and being transfixed watch Carl dance to Swan Lake as the credits rolled
@@chriscole7947 The Prince on TOTP was broadcast on 6th September. Magpie only came back after the strike in late October or even November and Madness were off to the States on tour on 21st November so there appears to be a 4 week window for the Magpie appearance in there. I suppose you can't rule out December totally either. Thanks again for your information; it would incredible to see them do Swan Lake live on television. I'll keep searching...
@@MrWheeze If the person you got this off still has the original tape, and it was recorded off TV (rather than a studio copy) the broadcast date/time can be confirmed using Teletext Recovery software.
@@DustyCustard Thanks but don't have access to the tape
Pretty cool without Suggs! I wonder how many times this has happened...
Just twice for television, the other time being in 1982 when his wife was about to give birth
I remember that I think they replaced him with a mannequin. Apparently the reason he was absent from the Magpie shoot was because he was having nookie his girlfriend.
What program would this have been on?
Magpie - some details via the web link in the description
Thought it could of been Swop Shop but thry diddent appear on that till Dec 1979.
It's from Magpie - follow web link in the description for some extra info
So I’m presuming OSB had been recorded and then overlooked as a single in favour of The Prince, OSB then being released as a single later in 1979? I’m guessing this was filmed in July/August 79?
Suggs never turned up so they couldn't perform The Prince. There was also an ITV strike from August so it's a bit of a puzzle. I've just updated the entry on the website above which might explain things better
@@MrWheeze Suggs was down at the Chelsea ground more like lol..
WHAT!? Shit...
