Leyla Hussein | The Cruel Cut

  • Every 11 seconds, a girl undergoes female genital mutilation (FGM). Leyla Hussein is an anti-FGM campaigner and a survivor who shares her personal experience of FGM with the goal of protecting girls from this abusive practice. Originally from Somalia, Leyla works as a psychotherapist in the UK and addresses the prevalence of FGM around the world. As Leyla reminds us, FGM is a practice of oppressing women and controlling women's sexuality. It is not an African issue, it is not an Asian issue; it is a global issue that requires a global investment in women. The Oslo Freedom Forum is a global event series presented by the Human Rights Foundation (HRF).

I'm a med student from Croatia. Two years ago one professor gave us a talk about global health problems. He mentioned FGM. He was brutally honest. No poking around the issue. He said that it's a pity this is not something spoken about in classes, that is classes on sexual health, because while it ia not a issue her NOW it might be something we will be facing in the future, wheter due to those women who immigrate in Croatia and have gone trough FGM, or if we go work abroad and see it somewhere else, in some county with more immigrants such as Brittain or Germany.
He alsi said he has seen what the consequences look like and than he said. 'It's not nice, not nice at all. I will not try to prepare you for it because, just like with so many things in our profession, you can't be prepared, not really. I will tell you that is probably one of the worst things I have seen in my career that was DONE to another human. Not something that 'just happened', like an injury, but something that was DONE!'

One of the main issues is that this "practice" was tied in with Islam because of the fact that Mohammed did not explicitly prohibit it. He essentially said, "do not cut deeply." If he had prohibited it, the practice might have been eradicated by now. If you look at an FGM map, the overwhelming majority of instances of this "practice" are in Muslim majority countries/areas. Tradition is hard enough to break but when you tie religion in with it, it becomes very difficult. History confirms this fact. It explains things like the date of Christmas and various other holidays. All of them are based in tradition and religion. This is why the Church did not ban the winter festival, but rather converted it to the birth of Christ.
Anyway, the point is that getting these people to change is way easier said than done. You would need a consensus of Islamic scholars to say that the "practice" is haram (prohibited) in order to see any real change. Also, trying to separate Islam from this "practice" is definitely counter productive. Muslims will definitely not want to admit to being largely responsible for this because it is a difficult fact for them. Yes, non Muslims practice it. But, the map does not lie. It cannot be tied to Africa as an African problem nor is it STRICTLY an Islamic problem. If I had to define it, it would say it is a cultural problem with Islamic elements tied in.
Anyone who says that FGM is not a Muslim issue at all is lying to you. It is no coincidence that a map of FGM practicing countries almost completely mirrors a map of Islamic countries. In this case, correlation does imply causation. I understand that FGM predates Islam but it became tied to Islam whenever Mohammed did not prohibit it, essentially making it acceptable within the religion. Educating people about the dangers will help in many cases but you need strong religious arguments as well in order to change people's minds about FGM.

@@damnmuggle that's what I'm saying. It's an African practice that was passed from from ancient Egypt. I'm east African and I come from a region that has this practice rampant. I asked my mother about its origins and she called it "pharonic" and that it was then passed down to us. The other thing is that many people think they are doing their daughters a favour since they have nomadic lifestyle where they travel for miles with only their life stock, they worry that someone might kidnap them and rape them. Most of them don't live in a society or have any neighbors. So to them, they see it as keeping a woman's honour and a form of protection in case they run into problems during their travel.
