  • A hike into the Northern Heights of London across Highbury Fields and past the old Arsenal Stadium and inside the famous marble halls plus a walk on the old pitch. Then through Gillespie Road Nature Reserve, stop for lunch at Eden's Cottage at Finsbury Park as recommended by The Chicken Connoisseur. Onwards into Hornsey and a visit to the shop from Shaun of the Dead.

Great Channel, was suggested by CZcams, and as you do I clicked....Now I have spent all of my Sunday going through your backlog. Thank you, time well spent. This video was quite interesting to me as I, a small child I lived just around the corner from Arsenal Station, in Drayton Park. You mentioned in an earlier video I saw about 'Percy Dalton' peanuts, I remember on match days there was always a little 'Percy Dalton's' cart parked almost opposite where we live and my Mum or Dad getting a cone of peanuts for me. Bugger, I have not thought about that in 50 years!

Found this walk by accident and loved it. Went to school in Gillespie Road and lived in Green Lanes N4. Of course, no nature reserve at that time (50s/60s). Then lots of friends later lived in Crouch End/Muswell Hill. Thanks so much for this film and will watch others, though this one was my home territory from birth to 25 years old. Your book also sounds interesting. Thanks so much.

Have many happy memories of spending time in Highbury Fields though normally I would head off to Highgate on hot days to have a dip in the bathing ponds. Really enjoying all of your wonderful, informative films - they have a magical quality about them.

Great music John-reminded me of Danny Elfman's score for 'Sleepy Hollow'. When I was driving a cab, I did encounter Shaun of The Dead Tourist's on more than one occasion who were going to or just had checked-out some of the locations.I can remember taking a young American ( there's a song in there) couple to the other side of London to look for a pub in New Cross which apparently was used in the film.I was supprised as I always associated Shaun with North London.

The Shaun locations are kind of scattered aren't they - the Winchester was in New Cross as you say (now flats I believe), the supermarket was somewhere near Kings Cross I was told, but the other exteriors are various parts of north London aside from one I think. Have to get to work on the JC trail now.

Fantastic John. Loved seeing the old Highbury. Must have been very eerie standing there. When I was down walking around Finsbury Park a few years ago I wanted to visit the old Rainbow theatre or Finsbury Park Astoria, home of Ziggy Stardust and many other epic concerts, but I wasn't allowed in as it was a religious church or something. There's meant to be some fantastic architecture inside so if you ever get a chance to film in there, that would be fantastic . Cheers.

If you ever stretch your territory to King's Langley you'd like the former Ovaltine factory I think. Unfortunately it's now 'luxury flats', but don't let that put you off. In the very early 70s I attended Hornsey College of Art and lived in a shared house on the now infamous Cranley Gardens. In good weather I dried my underpants on the skates of the bay window. One day a woman knocked on the doors asking if I had any idea who she was. After answering in the negative she told me that she was Des O’Conner’s cleaner and that she objected to having to look at my underwear. The college is long gone but the building and the memories remain.

In a journey from Highbury Fields to Hornsey, you seem to have used as your nexus, the Londis site of the(very) minor 'classic' Shawn of the Dead?
    Is that it?
Also, the usual referents, that Self short story (yawn), the King short story (even a bigger yawn) - you thankfully left out the Dylan nonsense from 1992 (the pub, the Dave Stewart yarn, the house on Birchington Road, etc, etc) - thankfully. Is that all you can come up with?
Or is the psychogeography of this area barren, as opposed to the rich mulch of East London and it's mounds ("the clock that thinks it's Glastonbury Tor...the parking...the hill, the horror.."?

+Trevor Barre this made me laugh Trevor, I don't know if that was your intention. I love that area, this walk possibly works better on the page in my book, but otherwise I think you're being a bit harsh - particularly in reference to that Londis

Glad that I got a laugh from you, John. All I meant was that there is so much to enjoy in the area (the Parkland Walk, Highgate Cemetery, etc), but of course it's your right to focus on the things that are dear to you. I didn't mean to sound harsh, by the way.sorry 'bout that.
Have just ordered your book, which I'm very much looking forward to.

No worries Trevor - hope you enjoy the book. Keep meaning to head up to Ally Pally at some point for a video but want to find my pamphlet about the old railway first, seems to have lost itself

I've got a couple of small books about Ally Pally and environs that I can recommend, John, if you were interested.

One of Gillian Tindalls wonderful evocative books is about Hornsey and Holloway. In her books she really brings the past to life be it London,a Cotswold village or Paris. I'm a fan of old JC's brother Piers. He's anti-climate change propaganda and anti-mask. He knows it's ALL about control. It's so ironic and a bit offensive how social housing ie blocks of flats are being removed and replaced with - blocks of flats. But I put a lot of the blame on the alkie/druggies who blamed their nasty habits and dysfunctional lifestyles on the social housing a once benign society graciously allotted them to live in,for free in real terms, ungrateful bastards,so after about 30 years of "living in a high rise" does your head in myth,it way opened the gates for a much less benign ruling lot to say,"all social housing is bad,it creates problems for people the solution is to get rid of social housing". Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. So now very well designed and spacious council flats, like the one I live in,are being removed, and replaced with almost identical flats but that you have to pay a lot of money to live in and all you get extra is a fancy kitchen worktop or summat.
