I love interesting characters. They drive the story. A well-rounded character can read the grocery list and keep the reader interested. Cheers 😊

In my view, characters not only drive the story, they are the centrepiece of the story! Cheers! P.

Another great episode - having a background as a playwright, I understand the importance of a well-developed fully realized character - but hadn't really thought about expositionary dialogue. Don't think I am guilty of it - but now I will see if I have any. Tanks for the tip.

What worries me is that sometimes my characters will talk about a subject-usually something in their current environment-that doesn't immediately play a role in the story but will much later, and readers will get bored before they even reach the part where it becomes relevant. But the information is important. I try to dress it up a bit to keep it interesting by also using it for character development and world-building, with some action in between.
My genres are Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Mystery. It's a slow cooker (mystery part) that has to build itself up. I'm hoping the genre will give me a bit of leeway here, in that readers of these genres would be patient enough to let the world build before DNF'ing it.

It sounds like you're using dialogue to create foreshadowing, which is a great device. The problem we sometimes run into is that there is too much exposition in the dialogue. It should just be small pieces with other pieces added, either through dialogue, action, or reflection as the story progresses. 😃 P.
