    What is your opinion on content warnings in the query?-Some say do it, others say don't.

    • @PatriciaJParsons
      @PatriciaJParsons Před 6 dny

      I suppose my almost forty years in the writing business give me a specific perspective. I think content warnings in query letters are completely unnecessary and inappropriate. In fact, if I were an editor or an agent and writers put these in queries, I'd peg them as amateurs who've learned their business from another wannabe writer in a Facebook group. I'm not much of a believer in warnings on finished books, either. The book's blurb should be sufficient for any potential reader to determine if it's the kind of book they'd want to read. I'd appreciate warnings that say things like "Warning: This book contains multiple stylistic and punctuation errors." Hope that helps! P.

    I usually go straight to #4, looking up names related to something about that character. Because I write sci-fi and fantasy almost exclusively, this usually means I look up relevant words in other languages then fit them to their culture's phonetics. Similarly, my name's taken from Latin, and my persona's a wandering alien from distant stars!

    It is fun naming characters. For my Sci-Fi/Fantasy, my main character is named Irene Jameson. Her kid sister is named Charlene Jameson. They call each other "Reenie" and "Charlie." Her closest friend, Jennifer Jones, calls her "Ren." They call each other "Ren" and "Jen." Her frenemy, Lisa Lovell, once a best friend, now a best enemy, annoyingly calls her "Renny." Her late parents (Jimmy Jameson and Miranda Jameson) and Godparents call her "Reyna." Everyone else calls her Irene. I avoided trying to be too exotic since this all takes place in the early 26th Century. I figured keeping things familiar in that world would connect with readers better. It's already disorienting starting a new book as it is. I didn't want to add to it. Great video on this subject! Thank you!

    What worries me is that sometimes my characters will talk about a subject-usually something in their current environment-that doesn't immediately play a role in the story but will much later, and readers will get bored before they even reach the part where it becomes relevant. But the information is important. I try to dress it up a bit to keep it interesting by also using it for character development and world-building, with some action in between. My genres are Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Mystery. It's a slow cooker (mystery part) that has to build itself up. I'm hoping the genre will give me a bit of leeway here, in that readers of these genres would be patient enough to let the world build before DNF'ing it.

      It sounds like you're using dialogue to create foreshadowing, which is a great device. The problem we sometimes run into is that there is too much exposition in the dialogue. It should just be small pieces with other pieces added, either through dialogue, action, or reflection as the story progresses. 😃 P.

    I have the free version and am very disappointed as it will not correct the whole book at once. You have to put a chapter at a time in and then paste it back into your manuscript. I would get far too confused with the process so don't use it. When you pay for it, do you get the option to edit the whole manuscript, or not?

    • @PatriciaJParsons
      @PatriciaJParsons Před 3 měsíci

      Grammarly is an add-on that you activate to comb through a complete manuscript (and it also corrects emails, replies like this one, etc.) I think what you are describing is the online version. In the version I use, I simply open my manuscript file, click on "open Grammarly," and it crawls through the entire manuscript, highlighting possible errors on the manuscript itself and providing me with a sidebar that explains the suggestion, which I can either accept or discard. Hope that helps! Happy writing! P.

    I think Grammarly came out before ChatGPT 3, before today's Large Language Model AI's took off. It's therefore not very smart. I heard one editor say that it is especially bad with commas. It recently asked me to change: "I covered my ears but it barely helped." to "I covered my ears, but it barely helped." This is what ChatGPT 3.5 said: No, a comma is not needed in that sentence. "I covered my ears but it barely helped" is correct as it is. Since "I covered my ears" and "it barely helped" are closely related and form a compound predicate, they don't require a comma between them. ChatGPT seems to understand my sentence, while Grammarly gives me the boilerplate below. Grammarly does say that if both independent clauses are very short, it's acceptable to omit the comma, but didn't appear to detect that they were short in my sentence. It appears that you are missing a comma before the coordinating conjunction but in a compound sentence. Consider adding a comma. A compound sentence includes two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). In a compound sentence, the conjunction is in most cases preceded by a comma. However, if both independent clauses are very short, it's acceptable to omit the comma.

    • @PatriciaJParsons
      @PatriciaJParsons Před 3 měsíci

      First, one of the realities of using AI assistants for style issues in writing is that they are evolving based on feedback and usage, and Grammarly is no different. I'm not suggesting it is the only one to use or even the best; I'm using it as an example. Second, I have to disagree with your view on the use of commas between independent clauses. I believe Grammarly is right. Omitting the comma may be an individual preference in deference to the "length" of the clauses, but I prefer to defer to the experts. I always check the Purdue ONien Writing Lab from Purdue University since it's been spot-on helpful for these issues for years. You might want to check their view. They make no exception for the length of the clause. But thanks fo weighing in. Debate about these issues is healthy!owl.purdue.edu/owl/general_writing/punctuation/commas/extended_rules_for_commas.html

      What's interesting is that the vast majority of readers do not, in fact, choose award-winning literary masterpieces to read. They choose books written by celebrities and books recommended to them by others (friends and SM contacts in the main) much more frequently. If you are passionate about your writing, don't worry about all those potential readers. Just write. As someone once said, no one can read a blank page. Fill that page! P.

    My writing process is more than just writing, but also thinking, talking about it, and jotting/doodling notes. The writing itself is on done on my weekend mornings. The thinking is done in my morning commute to work which involves a lengthy walk. I just don't have the time/energy/brain power to write inside my 40 hour work week (I have to work for a living.) Come weekends though, and I'm at it. My stopping point is, lol, when I go brain-dead as I call it. I can easily and eagerly put in up to 8000 words on a Saturday morning that stretches into the afternoon (of course those 8000 words later get edited-- piecemeal on my lunch breaks throughout the work week, by hand for the first revision.) I like your idea of doing something regular before starting. I'll have to give that idea some attention, as my eagerness jumps me out of bed and into my writing nook.
