- This video details the build-up of “The Grand Challenge” for the Great Electric Train Show on Friday.
This is day two of two build up days.
Pete Watermans Making Tracks OO gauge model of the West Coast main line has been exhibited over the last three years at Chester Cathedral.
This is the first time we have attempted to join all three layouts from Making Tracks I, II and III into one supersized layout that’s over 150 feet long.
Join us as we assemble, problem solve and see this layout operate for the first time.

Must be nice to have an unlimited budget, and access to the greatest minds in model railroading history.
The one thing that amazed me was all those old drinking soft drinks. The overhead drone shots were amazing. Congratulations to Pete and the crew. Hopefully you'll never have to do it again.

Phil is an absolute genius, not only does he have his vast knowledge of electronics, but he’s clearly capable of multitasking with any aspect of railway modelling, best of all is that he seems to keep so calm and focused!
Having watched the progress of this project from the early days, one thing has struck me and that is; the sheer scale and length of the layout is truly incredible, but because it’s become very familiar to me with watching all the videos, seeing the finished layout looks perfectly normal! Where in reality this is a groundbreaking achievement!

Our freight trains are not that long, that is more like an American one with all them on it, that is why it is slowing down being to long, the engine cant cope
I saw no over-length trains running on it, either in the video or at the show. We have just got so used to seeing short trains in model form that a full length one looks a bit odd.
