    This stuff is awesome. I am learning BJJ now, but have a fair bit of experience in Judo (and other martial arts), and it's great to see someone put the two together in the way I am thinking about; without trying to tell someone that one is better. Both are awesome arts. Good stuff Stephan.

    Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - Basically Just Judo
    Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu looks just like Judo, because it is Basically Just Judo. When Mitsuyo Maeda, a.k.a. "Conde Koma", began teaching Carlos Gracie in Belem do Para, Brazil in 1917, he was teaching Jigoro Kano's Jiu-Jitsu direct from the Kodokan in Japan. The name "Judo" was not popularized until 1925.
    Mitsuyo Maeda was a Kodokan Judo instructor whose specialty was ground fighting (newaza). This type of ground-only fighting is often referred to as Kosen Judo, or High School Judo, because it was popularized in Japanese High Schools as a form of interscholastic wrestling. Kosen Judo rules allowed direct transition to newaza, enabling scenarios where one less skilled competitor could drag the other down to the ground (a tactic now known as "pulling-guard" in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu).
    There is absolutely no question that the Gracie family demonstrated great skill and marketing acumen by promoting "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu" or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the masses. Helio Gracie's loss to Kodokan Judoka Masahiko Kimura was advertised as a "moral victory". More importantly, the Gracies sponsored the original Ultimate Fighting Championships when the world was begging for a professional combat sport with more depth than Boxing and more realism than the WWF. However, there is now a generation of Jiu-Jitsu students who only know half the story. Worse yet, they are often paying enormous prices for the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu name only to learn a subset of Jigoro Kano's original Jiu-Jitsu techniques and teaching methods.
    The Judo world has not been without fault too. High ranking judoka often looked down on the new popular MMA world due to Judo's Olympic status. As a result, most Judo schools have been over-emphasizing the throwing techniques within Judo due to pressure from the International Olympic Comittee to increase ratings on TV for the brief moments when Olympic Judo would receive air time. Similarly, there is a generation of Jiu-Jitsu students, and now instructors, who incorrectly think Judo is nothing but a standing sport.
    Fortunately, the phenomenal success of Ronda Rousey, 2008 Olympic Judo Bronze Medalist and UFC / MMA Champion has brought attention back to the accurate history of Judo and its rightful place in the Jiu-Jitsu grappling world.

    I love this stuff! Instead of just saying "oh well, I just use my superior balance from judo", he speaks about specific alterations to basic stance which makes his BJJ much more versatile and mobile. Also, it's no surprise to the question asked about standing 'super defensive' BJJ opponent in comp that he has counters to break into that since surely judo fighters surely come across/use similar such techniques themselves with that 'hips back, arms out' posture either in attack or defence.

    • @kuldarnei6207
      @kuldarnei6207 Před 6 lety

      Such defensive framing is penalized rather quickly in judo competitions. It's quite effective , that's why it's essentially banned. That said, of course there are ways around such a defense , there are some throws which could still be utilized. You can always attack/break the grips themselves.. Also, easier said than done, but you need to get the initiative in the gripping and the movement right off the bat, when you get to a decent spot you attack immediately. Thats essentially what judo is about. So if you develop a versatile aggressive judo style it could be somewhat effective in a bjj situation.

    • @DigitalPsyche
      @DigitalPsyche Před 5 lety

      Kuldar Nei I found it to be effective in Judo class. We had to take turns defending and attacking. I was paired with a black belt, I’m a white belt. I didn’t bend over at the waist like the guy in the video, but I instinctively kept a low wide stance, broke his posture by keeping his head down with a collar grip, and a reasonable distance away. It worked well to defend, but yes, you can’t easily attack from that position when you’re not allowed to touch the legs. It’s tough because I’m not there for competition or points, I’m there to learn judo technique and timing, not the latest judo comp rules. I also train BJJ and don’t want to compete and don’t care about comp rules. I’m trying to balance what they ask of me without training to a rule set. My goal is self-defense, fitness, and fun.

    • @jsl8461
      @jsl8461 Před 4 lety +1

      @@markd2797 Agreed, it takes a very long time to learn. Georgian grip to sumi-gaeshi is a far more efficient way for a non-judo person to learn how to deal with this posture. Russian two-on-one grip to sumi-gaeshi is great too. Also, pulling an opponent forward in a circle and switching to a cross-body driving osoto-gari (similar to what is shown in this video) is relatively easy to learn and works really well against most BJJ guys. Ankle picks, arm drags / collar drags, and taking shoots before the opponent gets two grips set are other great options for non-judo guys. Oh yeah, fireman's carry is pretty good too. And getting a waist grip on the side or behind and doing tani otoshi. I guess there are a lot of options.
      But for judo purists, nothing feels better than hitting an uchimata against a defensive, hunched over BJJ guy who thinks stiff-arming is going to keep you at bay. That's my favorite option against guys who are about my size (if they're a lot bigger than me, it's hard for me to get the power to lift them; my hips just aren't that strong).

    Some really good stuff. All martial arts start to lose effectiveness as they turn away from fighting and towards sport competition. The Olympics really set back Judo and TKD. I think you could argue BJJ is becoming less effective as the focus on tournaments takes it similarly away from street fighting (btw I love and train BJJ).

    it's such a typical question for people new to judo - how do I throw someone that's really defensive? And the truth is, for people who are more experienced, acting that way is GIVING the other person a throw, like the Osoto gake, or a tai-o or whatever. That's why judoka don't stand like that, it limits your options - not only are you not really any harder to throw, you can't do shit from there.

    I think that's a bit too stereotyped between Asian and Caucasian ability within martial arts though. In my Karate school here in England we have quite a few 50+ year olds (caucasian males) still maintaining flat splits and throwing very high kicks. If you train one of the arts you should train and not to let your mobility go. If you're dedicated enough at least.
