    Great gift there! My favorite is the MOW car with the light. It could be used with the cranes if the salvage runs into the night! I've had one since I was a kid that was part of the small collection my brother left me when he moved out.

    When you brought out that house at about 9:44, my heart skipped a beat. I have that very house, on a hill overlooking a junk yard on my layout. Not sure exactly how old that model is (as in, when they started producing it), but mine was a birthday present back in 1988, so it's at least 35 or 40 years old.

    The long flat cars are Athearn piggyback cars. They are designed to carry truck trailers (piggyback). They will have talgo truck assemblies to handle sharper curves. The green car you showed is called an impac car set usually five individual cars attached together and designed to be more efficent in that they are much lighter. They were designed again to carry truck trailers. The CN unit with the handrails is an Athearn GP9. GP general purpose. Can be used in freight or passenger service. Finally the couplers on the VIA set are European style couplers They are mostly found on European model trains.

    Both the strange looking kit cars and the 89' flatcars are TOFC (Trailer On Flat Car) equipment- the beginnings of intermodal. The 89' cars will probably not look good or operate well on your curves, but the others should work alright. The trailer kits you looked at first are likely also for this service.

  • @hirsutusi5536
    @hirsutusi5536 Před rokem +1

    The long flat cars were used to carry trailers when trailers were 40 ft long, two trailers per flat. These guys don't run too well without well weighted trailers on them. The flaps on the ends would be lowered when loading a string of flats, the tractor driver would back-up along the string detach the trailer, drive forward off the string, connect to the next trailer, rinse and repeat. A pretty time consuming job.
    The green and the red jobbies are the newer generation of rail cars to carry newer 53 ft road trailers usually in close coupled 5 or 10 car strings. You will see a mix of them and double stack container cars on freight trains today. Loaded from the side with a crane or mobile loader.
    The little hoppers cars are used for iron ore and other high density cargo. Iron ore is around 5 tons per cubic meter, compare that with coal which is around 0.8 tons per cubic meter, there are limits to how much weight you can put on each pair of trucks/bogies.
    The round files looked to be O/A welding tip nozzle cleaners, using them as files to enlarge holes in railroad is a brilliant idea.
    BTW, you can connect your earlier passenger car string by making the baggage car a transition car, KaDee on the front, horn hook on the back then sit it behind the loco.
    Have fun.
    Tony

    • @ScottRails
      @ScottRails  Před rokem +1

      Thanks Tony, I appreciate your time with this reply. So they used to drive the trailers all the way along the train, backwards!, I can barely reverse a u-haul up my driveway, hahaha.
      So far I've got two of the passenger cars going round with the D&W, but the baggage car has really crappy clip in couplers without an easy way of changing to kadee. I'll need to cut and glue, or wait till the next show and get something a bit better.
      Thanks again.
