      Yep, I was lazy and went to a quickie lube. They were supposed to do the first major service on the car. After a couple hours they called me and told me I’d have to tow it to a mechanic because the threads where the spark plugs go were stripped. When I came to pick up the car they told me that it wasn’t they’re fault and the threads where already stripped when they got it. I told them they’d never been replaced, that’s when they told me that “well, we’re not paying to fix the car and you can’t prove it was us” I was young and stupid, I should have sued them. The previous owner had given me all the records and I could have proved that the dealership had only performed oil changes and a tire rotation. Long story short, I paid $500 to have $2,000 worth of damage done to my car.

    Most shops use air impact tools when mounting tires, and grossly over-torque nuts or bolts.

    • @boomerguy9935
      @boomerguy9935 Před 3 lety +4

      I'm a victim of this. My tire went flat in the driveway and I couldn't get the lug nuts off. So, I put a cheater bar on my wrench and twisted the lug bolt in half. Tire and half the bolt came off. That is when I had the flashback of the guy in the tire shop using an air wrench without the "torque-stick". I was so focused on him using the "star" pattern when tightening, I missed the torque - or lack, thereof - method.
      After buying a new lug bolt and loosening all the nuts on all the wheels with an impact wrench, I tightened them by hand with a torque wrench. I went back to the offending discount tire shop and vented, promising to never return again while spreading their reputation as far as possible. I don't know if it helped because this was before the days of SOCIAL MEDIA which I don't use, but I felt better. Lesson learned the hard way.
      Now I buy my tires from a trusted tire shop with a torque wrench used in a "star" pattern. It costs a little more but it is worth it.

      I work at Discount Tire. We use air impacts to take off and put on wheels. When we put wheels on, we use torque sticks, that limit the max torque to 65 ft lbs. Then we lower the vehicle halfway until the tires are touching the ground, and torque each wheel.

      The tire places I've been using have been using torque wrenches for years. I noticed a change way back in the mid to late 70s. The gas stations of that era that offered repair and tire replacement services tended to not use torque wrenches on the lug nuts. It could make changing a flat tire impossible. Torque wrench use is much more common these days. Even Costco uses a torque wrench.

One time, at a different shop, I got home with my 4 new tires mounted, and one went completely flat within a half hour. I would prefer that the wheels on my car be balanced using a spin balancing machine.

    I do have a slight confession to make, I used to work at a tire shop called "Town Fair Tire" in my hometown and man we had some angry customers. Thank God I don't work there anymore because I was being yelled at too many times and let every one of my coworkers down but that was due to being misunderstood all the time. Anyways I remembered this one lady that was obviously angry because of course one of my coworkers made a huge mistake but she kind of yelled on top of her lungs why her car was operating right. However on that day one of her kind family members apologized on her behalf and said that her sister or twin sister died, hints why she took it out on everybody. Never again I will work at a tire shop like "Town Fair Tire" due to being misunderstood and yelled at all the time by my coworkers. Scotty may I have the product please?😁 If so how do I win it?

      Well Scotty anyone can make mistakes. I had a problem with the tire. Was in El Paso leaving there for California a my car at 60 miles an hour starts bouncing I pulled over checked all four tires for a bubble or separation or whatever might be going on on the tires. So I'm in the middle of no place cuz I'm on the highway 9 heading along the Mexico border and Mexican border decided Well I'll baby it at 55 or didn't vibrate. And I called a friend ask him about what he thought that might be cuz I couldn't find a bubble or separation. he said maybe you threw a weight. And I start thinking about it I said I'll bet you that's what it is well I got the Tucson I Not only was missing a weight but the tire was starting to go bad the cut at the very beginning Discount Tire gave me a brand new tire for $37 which was a $200 Tire good thing I had the warranty this time.
