I suppose it's just mechanical sympathy on my part more than anything but let's say that car done 10000 miles in that year, and wasn't serviced in the previous year before CT bought it then it's going to be heading towards very exessive engine wear that might end up actually killing it before a major failure elsewhere

Fabio Scerra what about the rust. It would costs thousands to replace the panels and paint them. That’s why they use steel. When the cars become obsolete (it’s not bad but the engine is still old and has poor emissions) it’s time to send them to the scrapyard for parts. Plus the manufacturers want them to break eventually so you can buy the newer models and this stimulates them for investing into new technologies. On the other hand is still cheaper to bring this one to working order instead of buying new one, but it can potentially be cheaper to buy a bit more expensive one with fewer problems, ie something around 3000£

I had a car like this one, and I think it was my favorite car ever. It was a 2004 Malibu. Salvage Title. It was rear ended and sandwiched. It sat in a wreckers yard for about 3 months in Florida with no windshield. A relative purchased it and then left it to us, and we thought, yeah. Free miles, winter beater.
We did NOTHING to it, and it ran from 130,00 miles to 250,000 miles with no problems. Funny enough, ours didn't have ABS either. The rebuilder removed all the ABS components. It was like a mangy but faithful little dog. Loved it. Saw us through the recession of the late 2000s.
The engine and trans still ran flawlessly when we donated it. The electronic steering rack ended up totaling it because it would no longer pass inspection. The best cars are the ones you don't have to care about! I used to brag to Prius owners about how i recycled a dead car instead of buying new or even used.

M54 powered BMW's are really reliable as long as the cooling system doesn't explode. The ZF S5D 320Z gearbox is practically bulletproof other than the gearshift neutral centering pins dying. I'd recommend changing that valve cover gasket, I've seen engine fires caused by oil dripping off the valve cover onto the hot catalytic converters.
