The bedard hit has it all. Young talent crossing into the center lane, veteran defenseman playing the body, then teammates policing the hit. It’s good hockey and it’s a perfect reflection of where the game is right now. I feel a little sorry that bedard took a jaw fracture trying to put up points, but he’ll bounce back and he’s earned a stripe.

The hit on Bedard was not "ugly" at all. Normal hockey play. I'd say the biggest issue is Bedard is relatively short and that makes contact to his head highly susceptible.

I kinda agree and disagree on this. I absolutely think it’s clean, shouldn’t even be 2 minutes.
I think what makes it “ugly” is the result. I always hate to see someone get hurt, even on a clean play. To me, “ugly” doesn’t have anything to do with whether it’s a good hit, but what the result is (and to be clear, we shouldn’t mete out any punishment for clean hits that have ugly results).

Just wanna say thanks for showing the PWHL some love. I'm a Minnesota season ticket holder (right behind our bench), and was there for the home opener. It's a 5.5 hour drive for me, and worth every minute. The stadium was absolutely buzzing, and it made my eyes water a bit seeing all the girls in the crowd repping their various teams. I think this league is absolutely legit, and is going to change the game for the better for girls, boys, and everybody else involved in the best sport on this planet.
Also, watching the warmies, I noticed Zumwinkle's (#13 MIN) hands were looking extra silky and I could tell she was going to be putting pucks in the net. I knew I should have brought a hat!

Regarding the high stick on Perfetti, in my opinion, if you're after revenge for what you consider a dirty play, go after the guy who made the play. Deliberately high-sticking a guy who had nothing to do with it except being on the same team is a cheap shot and a coward's move, and it doesn't get any better when you look at the standings and see that it's a cheap shot against a top team when you yourself are only really in the playoff hunt as a technicality. Eye-for-an-eye tends to go in circles, and going after young stars who didn't make the hit in the first place is a great way to ensure players like Kaprizov spend half their career on IR.

It's not uncommon for rookies to get injured, McDavid broke his collar bone, and hell, the Devils had their rookies injured too, Nico had a cage, Hughes busted his shoulder. These are small, young guys, and it's the risk they take playing at 19 with 30yo men.
Not to mention, half the Devils current roster is out too, including Hughes who was lost in the same game. It's been a rough year for a lot of teams.

For those who don't want to watch:
    - Connor Bedard Hit: Young prodigy Connor Bedard took a clean but impactful hit from Brendan Smith in the Devils vs. Blackhawks game, resulting in a jaw injury. The Blackhawks responded aggressively, showcasing their team culture.
    - Nick Cousins Hit: Jason Zucker delivered a controversial hit from behind on Nick Cousins, leading to a three-game suspension. Cousins has gained a reputation for questionable behavior on the ice.
    - Ryan Hartman's High Stick: Ryan Hartman high-sticked Cole Peretti as payback for a previous incident involving Brendan Dillon and Kirill Kaprizov. This incident sparked a debate on the NHL's code regarding protecting star players.
    - Minnesota Wild's Win: The Wild won a thrilling game against Columbus in OT, with a remarkable save from Marc-Andre Fleury, tying him for second all-time in wins.
    - Winter Classic Shutout: The Seattle Kraken secured the first shutout in Winter Classic history, defeating the Golden Knights.
    - Edmonton Oilers' Streak: The Oilers and McDavid are on fire, winning seven in a row, with McDavid reaching 900 points, putting him in MVP contention.
    - William Nylander Extension: William Nylander is expected to sign a $1.5 million extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
    - Winnipeg Jets' Surge: The Winnipeg Jets, unexpectedly, lead the NHL after a five-game winning streak.
    - NHL Standings: The Sharks are on an 11-game losing streak, while the Blackhawks are in hot pursuit for last place. The Leafs are on a three-game win streak.
    - World Juniors: Team USA dominated the World Juniors, winning gold, while Women's Hockey Canada faced an early exit. The PWHL started, and there's positive energy around the league's potential growth.
    - Overall Ugliness and Controversy: The week was marked by on-ice controversies, hits, and debates over the NHL's code, reflecting the physical nature of the game. Share your thoughts in the comments.

First there is nothing cheap or dirty about the hit on Bedard and if you promote guys having to fight after a clean hit youre part of the problem. I love hits and fighting in hockey it has its place but having to defend yourself for a good clean check is stupid. Second Sportsnet has to get rid of Jennifer Botteril she has no place talking about NHL hockey. She has zero experience in the mens game and is completely against contact in the sport. She fought with Kevin Bieksa about this same thing.

I disagree with a lot of people on the Bedard hit for two reasons. I will admit that by the current rules, Smith does nothing wrong - however one of the reasons bedard was in such a position was due to being tripped. If you watch at 0:30, #91 comes across after getting juked and drops bedard to one leg with a clear trip. Then Bedard, in a vulnerable position, gets tee'd up by Smith. Again, not saying he did anything wrong, but he definitely takes advantage of a young player in a vulnerable position. This brings me to my second point - from the NHLs point of view, if you have the stars of your league being put out for 4-6 weeks with broken jaws because of a "legal" hit, then you clearly have a problem. Players staying healthy should be #1 for both the league and fans, so honestly I don't care if the hit is "legal". Shots to the head should be avoided by all means and heavily discouraged regardless of intent.

seems to me that a 20 -30 potential game suspension for an illegal hit from behind or boarding, with each occurance of a suspicious hit be reviewed by specialists in determining severity. no threat of injury must be reviewed with much longer penalty time and costs starting at $25K for the first offense and double $$ for each recurrence of any team this should eliminate cheap shots that take favoured players out of the game.

I don't think people should takes cheap shots against each other for going after the star player because the star player is everywhere on the ice at the same time usually and hockey is a physical sport so chances are if a team is playing proper defense they will attack the star player.
